Need Fast Indian Food Advice

So all of a sudden it hits me: I am SO HUNGRY for Indian food!

I can get Mr. Gamegrrl to stop and pick some up on the way home from work, but it looks like Jewel of Toledo is closed??? According to ActiveDiner.com it is.

Anyway, they are only showing Tandoor and Masala. Is there anything closer to us? Something in the OWE to Michigan line range, east of Secor and west of, say, Detroit Avenue?

Hmm ... best I can think of is to have him get some packaged (boxed and/or frozen) Indian mixes from the Fresh Market. The salespeople will help him locate it. If he can also pick up a chicken breast and some naan bread there, you can fix your own PDQ. As far as restaurants, they're all in the Reynolds/Airport zone and nothing is readymade. Good luck -- I know the specific Indian craving that you feel right now!

We're settling for Chinese. Mr. Gamegrrl got to leave work early, so we were reduced to choosing between the three places that will deliver here in Sector Z.

I sure did want Indian food. sigh

Oh Viola! I'm so glad you 'get' this craving! Nothing else will touch it.

First time I ever had Indian cuisine was the week of Christmas, 2011. I was in NYC doing volunteer counseling at Ground Zero. Some of my fellow counselors were taking some time to walk around Greenwich Village one evening, and I tagged along.

They spotted an Indian restaurant and we ended up having dinner there. I had NO idea what to order, nor what to expect. But I fell in love :-)

Hey, JR, I like the new feature that highlights certain words in the text. I especially like the one the says, "work". Nice touch! But I understand the need to pay for the site. Just kidding you!

Can you inform me on the joke that I'm obviously missing?

Based upon your description, it sounds like a virus/malware/spyware/adware/scumware issue with your browser or operating system.

At a cost of $10 per month, I don't need outside sources to help fund this site.

You're right! Some @$#&! adware sneaked onto my PC. My mistake.

I don't think Indian Jewel is closed. we just had it last week. They moved to airport Hwy like 8 years ago, some sites still reference the Alexis rd location. If they are closed it will be a very sad day around here...

It was the Alexis Rd. location to which I was referring. Unfortunately, it seems I can't find anyplace for Indian food without trekking out to the Reynolds/Airport area. Meh.

yeah, South Toledo seems to be epicenter of Indian Food in Toledo-I don't know why, but you can color me happy about it.

Try Deepam India, the are on central near meijer. One of the cleanest restaurants that I inspect, definitely the cleanest Indian one!

It is kind of funny that Tandoor, Masala, Jewel and Star of India are all so close. If I was opening or moving an Indian restaurant, I would put it in Cricket West or somewhere else on Central between Secor and Douglas.

On a side note, I had takeout from Masala last night and it was delicious.

Would someone please suggest a restaurant meal (beverage and entree) for a first time try of Indian food?

Chicken Tikka Masala (not to be confused with chicken masala which has more a a tomato and vinegar based sauce)is a very popular gateway dish. Tomatoes and some cream, often yogurt with lots of baking spice-it's actually the National dish of England. Lot's of comforting flavors, Indian Jewel does this better than anyone.

I would second the Chicken Tikka Masala, its a pretty easy on Western taste buds. You may also want to try a lunch buffet at Tandoor or Jewelm that's one way to sample a number of different items. My go-to is Chicken Korma, with the backup being Saag Paneer.

I would eat Indian three times a week if Mrs. Ace would let me.

Can't disagree with any of the above and would also highly recommend trying the lunch buffets - you can try a small sampling of many dishes and see what is to your liking. I believe that Masala also has a lunch buffet.

As for a beverage - I'd go for a mango lassi. Not only delicious but helps to relieve the heat left behind from some of the spicier Indian dishes.

When I was at Masala the other day, they had a sign up saying that they were discontinuing the lunch buffets.

Lassi is SO good! And it's super SUPER easy to make at home. Tastes just as good as what you get at a restaurant. Possibly better.

Thanks for that info Larry. That means a great deal to me. I've never been there but will give them a try now.

I DO pay attention to the restaurant inspections. Most of the really bad reports - especially when they've received previously poor inspections - are places I don't patronize to begin with (Lee Williams House of meats in the Point comes to mind).

I have ceased going to certain establishments based on their inspections so I thank you for them.
