Wondering if anyone on TT uses Angie's List. If so, what sorts of reviews do you find? Do many Toledoans seem to use this resource? COnsidering signing up, but wonder if there would be enough variety to the reviews, or if it's a relatively small group of people. (Not that TT isn't helpful!) Details, anyone?

There is plenty of easy to find information on the web about this company. Therefore, I'd say that you need them.
I've been a member for about 2 years, and we were just talking about whether to re-up or not. The reviews are helpful but scant for remodelers, which is why we joined. We did find Redd Dogg Remodelers thru Angie's list and have been very happy with their work and reviewed them well. We haven't really used it for anything else, sorry.
I recently re-upped in order to find a good house painter...it paid off. The reviews were very helpful and I found a good contractor.
I would not recommend it. I submitted a negative review of a professional that I will not identify. I was not rude and I did not violate the rules in any way, and had documents and witnesses to back up my review. The professional got a lawyer to demand Angie's List remove the review or get sued. I was surprised how fast Angie's List folded in the face of such pressure, and removed the review. So the professional now has great reviews. No negative ones. I dropped my membership as a result. There are many Internet services, such as Yelp, that have customer reviews and are free to use. I have used them with great success.

Geez, renegade! That puts Angie's List in a whole new light! They brag that there's no advertising on their site, so you can get the unvarnished truth. Ha.
My garage door trade magazine recently reported a scenario about A.L. not reporting a scam and exorbitant overcharges from a garage door service company. In Arizona I believe...
I never realized you had to pay for a subscription to Angie's List!
I'd heard of it, but just assumed it was a free service like Yelp, etc.

Interesting.
This is what they say about removing reports on their website. Must be a big load of hooey:

Does Angie's List remove negative reports?
No!
There are only three reasons we would ever take down any report:
We find out the report was fraudulently posted
The member who posted the report chooses to remove it.
The report was a successful part of our Complaint Resolution.
When a report that has been part of the Complaint Resolution process is successfully resolved, we think it's only fair that the amended reports carry a grade of at least B—it's our way of giving the service company or health professional a little extra incentive to finish or fix the issue. If this occurs, the member is always able to repost the entire report with both the problem described and the update. If the problem isn't resolved, the original report remains untouched.
We never, ever, ever remove a negative report for any other reason. Angie's List retains a respected auditing firm, BPA Worldwide, to check our practices every year to ensure that no preferential treatment is given to anyone—including advertisers.
I joined Angie's List a few years ago when my sister in law bought her condo. She needed a painter, a plumber and an electrician. Since she lives in Canton, MI, I didn't really know where to look for her.
After a lot of research on their site, we found one of each of the above. All three did a fantastic job at a very fair price. So, my experience with AL was very positive. I kept the membership for another year in case my sister in law needed any other services but finally discontinued it last year. Saw no reason to continue paying for something I didn't need.
Agreed with the above posters who weighed the costs of joining AL versus the benefits of accessing ther information. The same information can be obtained for free, provided a person has a discriminating eye for weeding out some of the dreck on the free sites.
Also: I prefer to get a recommendation on contractors from someone I know, and then work that person's name into the conversation with the prospective contractor. I find that this technique helps subtly underscore that my work is not some one-off job, and that poor workmanship may have repercussions beyond just my house.
I also like to discuss the possibility of future work to help that person realize I am interested in more than just one job from the contractor (and yes: I deliver with the "bait" when I discover a good quality contractor and offer more work).

I've never signed up because you have no way of knowing how many reviews are there for the Toledo area without purchasing a membership. There is no free trial or anything like that...
There was a Groupon deal for AL this summer that was a good deal (1/2 price or even less...can't really remember). Perhaps I'll give it a shot if they offer that again.
I had an Angie's list membership and cancelled. There never seemed to be very many listings for this area for any service I was was planning to hire. Just no value for the money.
ANGIES LIST SUCKS DO NOT WASTE $$ IT, ONE PRO CONTRACTOR HERE IN TOWN USE'S CONTRACT HELP TO "FLIP" HOUSE'S AND THEY DO A REALLY CRAP JOB FLOORS SAG.HOLES NOT DRILLED, NO NAILS OR SCREWS WHERE THEY SHOULD BE AND WOOD SPLITING ON PORCH,TREES GROWING UNDER PORCH'S, CHILDS TOILET INSTALLED IN PLACE OF A ADULT ONE,,!! AND IT STARTS WITH MI...!

Interesting article about Angie's List:

Maybe she should have gotten a lawyer and gotten the post removed from Yelp...

Just shows how powerful the business community is. Most are pretty decent people. But some with go to any lengths to go after people with negative reviews. Kind of scary. So much for free speech. So long as the negative reviews are honest and not "under the belt" (name calling), everyone should be allowed to give them if they have a problem with a business or service. I'm hearing more and more about businesses getting lawyers and threatening to sue if negative comments are not removed from customer review websites. Starting to sound like the BBB.
