Channel 13 now has SEVEN weathercasters!

Channel 13 adds new on-air talent

WTVG-TV, Channel 13, has made a few additions to its on-air personnel.

Meteorologist Ross Ellet joined WTVG from Ohio News Network, where he worked earlier this year as morning meteorologist before ONN closed. Ellet served as weekend meteorologist and weather reporter for KHBS/KHOG in Fayetteville, Ark., from 2008 until 2012.

Meteorologist Nichole Langley is the station's new weekday traffic anchor and reporter on 13abc Action News Good Morning, and will anchor weather periodically. Langley was the morning meteorologist/reporter at ABC affiliate KFBB-TV in Great Falls, Mont., for the past two years.

"Meteorologists Jay Berschback, Bill Spencer, Geoff Cornish, Nichole Langley, Susan Ware, Kelly Heidbreder, and Ross Ellet give 13abc unmatched experience in the crucial area of daily and severe weather events," said WTVG's executive news director, Brian Trauring. "We've never had seven meteorologists at 13abc, but this reflects the importance and our commitment to weather coverage."

Umm...overkill??? Just a smidge???

I mean...holy crap...we get some severe weather from time to time, but this place isn't Oklahoma/Kansas (where tornadoes are practically an everyday occurrence) or the Gulf Coast (where everyone anxiously waits to see if a Cat 4 hurricane is coming at 'em).

In the meantime, over in "real news"-land, we've got a board of elections that can't get its shit together, questionable expenditures by the city (always), a bunch of levies on the ballot in November, a presidential battleground state beneath our feet, dirty restaurants, shady developers, yada yada yada......and apparently all we want to see out of local news are 5 dipshits standing in the snow telling us to "stock up on non-perishables" and "drive slowly".

Someone said (I think in the WOHO thread) something about times changing. Somebody change them back. Please.

Definitely some pretty severe overkill. Down here I think KWTV has the highest number of mets on staff out of the 4 local stations. I believe they are at 6 where 1 of them is dedicated as their lead storm tracker/chaser and another is their weather producer and only fills in on camera from time to time.

I can't possibly see the weather departments up there being the cash cows they are down here.

Stan was good enough for me.

Don't disagree with you at all OHT. But, thank the local Toledo market. If the market demanded "real world" news, it would get it. The station that refused to meet the demand wouldn't be on air for long.

Look around you - in your circle of friends, family, neighbors, etc. What do most of those folks discuss? Real world news and events like many of us here or are they more interested in who will be the next judge on American Idol or what one of those Kardashian idiots is up to?

Foodie, I'm a complete media realist and completely understand the concept of marketing "news" to the stupid. That's what talking about the weather for 10 minutes of a 22 minute newscast is.

Speaking of news for the stupid, here's a clip that's gone viral from yesterday. While most of the major networks (cable and broadcast) were marking the 8:46AM moment of silence for 9/11 victims, NBC's Today show decided it was much more worthy to talk to Kris Jenner (Kardashian) about her new tits. News for the stupid....or is it "news for the vapid". Dammit, I can never get it right.

Or as Break.com put it: Because the breasts of annoying, fat whores is more important than remembering 9/11, right NBC?

I think it really depends on the market when it comes to how the weather segment is handled. Down here they tend to be more serious and no so much educating "stupid" as you would see up there. There is none of the BS "certified most accurate" crap here. The broadcasts are normally serious, informative, and educational. They will introduce more complex terminology and data displays that other markets won't touch. However, people here are use to it and most know what CAPE, shear, and so on are. Of course it is also one of the me more coveted markets to get into if you are an on camera met (not to mention the vast research organizations/companies here as well).

Though you aren't far off then...at lot of the news casts are about talking to "stupid" and marketing it. Just the nature of the business anymore.
