Toledo Neighborhood Names & Boundaries MAP

Having spent 2 days in Government One Center and talking to each and every City and Lucas County Department related to Data Collection / Maps on my quest for a map, as stated on another post, there is no OFFICIAL neighborhood map. Everyone I talked to thought it was a brilliant idea and wants a copy when I am done, and was told the City has always needed one but that was the end of their support. I even talked to one of the heads of a department, and they stated that some of the names sounded like Urban Folklore. As stated on another post, there was OFFICIAL Political desire to create one at one time, but as you can see, its a daunting task, and not sure what the political outcome would be as far as justifying the time and cost.

I believe I have exhausted the Internet in finding all of the NAMES (very little help with the boarders) to compile the list below (took 1 week for this alone) now I want approach City Council for their input and support, to determine the requirements needed to create a City Council Adoptable OFFICIAL Map.

Now the question is, does anyone think it is worth City Councils time to assist in this endeavor? Bullet Statements in support would be helpful!

My thoughts are a possible announcement of the project seeking an all Volunteer commission (meetings held at libraries) for volunteering participants from the neighborhoods to participate in.

Here is the list compiled so far, and it does add roughly 20-30 new neighborhoods from the list posted on another thread. Info between the < and > is the source of the name, and city-data.com is not a Government Website.

How specific, is too specific. For instance, if you go to a lot of realty websites, they list houses and designate what "subdivision" they're in. If you take into account all the names of every plat of land that's been developed in Toledo history you'll have a ton of "names" that are official names for definable areas, that are even more specific than any of the neighborhood names you can derive from the internet. I'll find a list and post them, even if they're of no use to you, because they're interesting to me.

This page on Russell Realty's website has a huge list of all subdivisions through out Toledo. While it doesnt show them on a map or define any borders or anything, you can get the gist of what particular area each subdivision is if you just look at the houses for sale that are listed there.

Some of the subvisions are modern subdivisions, which isnt as interesting as old neighborhoods, but even new housing developments are neighborhoods. Its interesting knowing the particular names of older neighborhoods though. For instance, we were considering buying a house in what is Deveaux...but you can break it down even farther and call that particular section Wentworth (Bellevue, Roanoke, Kershaw...south of Sylvania Ave). Or for instance, I live in Library Village, but thats a newer name the neighborhood has been given. The original name for the development is Homeville, but across Sylvania Ave, is Homewood Park.

I was also wondering what the distinction is between a neighborhood vs. a subdivision.

For example, I'd think of Ragan Woods as more of a subdivision than a neighborhood like Old Orchard or the Old West End.

But that's just my feeling - I don't know what the official distinction is.

Just looking at some of the "Old West End" maps that are online... and they are encompassing larger swatches of other neighborhoods that aren't OWE. And not just outside of the historic district but wayyyyy outside of the Detroit to Collingwood, and Monroe to Central boundaries.

It's a big bother to some of us because the crime levels in our neighborhood are really low... while we are surrounded by some pretty high crime areas. So when things happen in like Old Towne or west of Detroit and then are reported by news orgs as "Old West End" it's pretty frustrating. We work had to keep the OWE safe and it's not fair when the neglect of outside residents (and crime) get reflected upon us.

I dont think there is any one definition really. You can call a cluster of homes built near each other way out in the country a neighborhood, really. Just the same, a lot of old urban neighborhoods are still subdivisions...they're were built by a developer on a particular plot of purchased land.

Ragan Woods has the feel and aesthetic of modern suburban development, because that's what it is, but honestly, its more traditional than say, Meadowbrook Acres Creek Estates Place (i made that up) with matching tract homes, streets going in nonsensical directions, only one way in and out, etc.

I think its the style of the homes/properties that make a place like that feel like less of a neighborhood.

Tobias: Thank you for the link. It looks thorough, and I think it exceeds too specific. Its use appears to be Real Estate Specific, and I am keeping it on hand for possible use in my FUTURE Real Estate Directory. If you don't mind, lets refer that to the "Subdivision" List.

Mom2: I have to agree with your post. I would like to continue on the "Traditional" neighborhood list with most recognised names, which is what I think most Toledoans refer to AFTER they say, North, South, East, and West Toledo.

I know, we are back to "Where do we draw the line"? Since I will be asking City Council for imput, we will see what they have to say.

I don't know if there's a whole lot that can be done about that Toledolen. Maybe perhaps the more organized and revitalized "historic district/association" could come up with a more distinct name? So that when positive events and occurances happen in your particular section of the OWE, they're listed as "Great time to come out to the so&so festival in Libbey Park (made up name) instead of just the broader Old West End?

I get what you're getting at GTVT. As far as Ragan Woods goes though, I'm pretty sure they have the little neighborhood name headers on their street signs, for what its worth.

Toledoien: You brought up a good point, and I can ask the question for you if this gets anywhere. Keep polking your head in on this post, because I fear this won't be the ONLY political question a.k.a "The Peoples Concerns" that will be brought up in reference to anything that could potentially affect Real Estate Values.

I think it's these issues that a neighborhood map has NEVER been created or approved.

Now I wonder who controls the maps for Data Collection? Is Data Collection by Zip Code?

Tobias: Regan Woods is #59 as TT Submitted and added <Signage> next to it. Will ask the city who qualifies for signage as well.

GTVT & Tobias:

Well, we do have an awesomely active neighborhood association. And the historic district boundaries are clearly drawn.

&
http://toledooldwestend.com/about/location/

While there is a smattering of involvement of neighbors outside the actual historic district, I would say about 90% of the people involved in the neighborhood (volunteering on a committee or during events or simply showing up at the monthly meetings or keeping in touch via our private Facebook group) are residents within the historic district.

In Sylvania Township, Ohio we have Dog Patch. The boundaries as I remember are Alexis, State Line, Whiteford, and Acres.
