I’m going to the Joe Louis Arena tonight for a concert. Question is where’s the best place to park?
I’ve only been to the JLA a few times and I was told you could park at Greek town and take the people mover? What are you opinions?
Thanks!

"Joe Louis Arena. Best way to get there"
Practice, my friend. Lots of practice.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
You could park at Greek Town and take the People Mugger. Or, just follow the signs off 75 and the Lodge as though you were going to Cobo. You'll see the signs for JLA parking.
I think if you park at Hockey Town they will shuttle you over to the Joe for free.

I have parked on the roof of Cobo Hall and that worked out well.Whatever you do,give yourself plenty of time to get there or you will miss part of the game.

Park anywhere in Greektown. Fishbones, Old Shilleligh, etc offer free shuttle service to and from JLA.
Best Route is to take I-75 North to Exit #47, follow signs for M-10 (Lodge Frwy) South. Exit on Larned Street (Left). Stay on Larned to Bush St. Take Left to Greektown. This route avoids alot of traffic.
Be careful coming home. I-75 south reduces from 3 lanes to one lane north of Monroe. Took us two hours to get home from the football game on Sunday. I will be looking for an alternative route after the Tigers game this Saturday.
Alternate fast route: take 94 to 275 to 75.
Alternate slower route: 75 S, exit Eureka Rd. to Telegraph Rd. south.
Last time I went I parked in the actual Joe Louis garage. There is an off ramp from 75 that leads right to it. It was expensive but no headaches or additional travel was needed. Go early if possible to avoid the rush.

"Mugger Mover" is the term Detroiters have used; just a cultural FYI.
I used to work at JLA, and the garage of which brainswell refers is the best option for people unfamiliar with the area. The last time I was at JLA as a patron it was $15 to park there, but the advantage is that you have fairly easy access to and from the freeway system. As brainswell indicated, it gets a bit congested in the 30-40 minutes before an event starts. If you get there 75-90 minutes early, you will not have traffic issues, and you will also be on a lower level (i.e., less exit congestion).
Greektown and other People Mover stops are fine, but it does get a bit backed up after the event with patrons waiting for People Mover cars.
If you want to go all cheap, you can park on Fort Street and walk a few blocks. Odds are good that your car will not be stolen, provided it is not a flashy 2013 Dodge Viper SRT GTS or something. Generally there are no major issues with vicious muggers in that area, though it tends to crawl with panhandlers and low level con artists, like the dudes who set up fake parking scams in private lots. Just walk in a group and you will be fine, unless the group is a group of criminals, in which case you will not be fine.
Just kidding; have a good time!

Funny story-NOT. A few years ago my husband, son and mom went to a hockey game there. We parked across the street on ground level underneath the parking garage (I think), that has the catwalk leading to it with the round circle windows. Well, our son wanted to take a ride on the people mover, so after the game the husband took him. My mom (who had a cane)and I went on to the car and were going to meet them in Greektown for dinner. While walking in that creepy building at the other end of the catwalk we passed several homeless people, one of which was being pushed in a wheelchair. At the time, there was quite a few game attendees around, but my mom and I were walking slow, and pretty soon it was just us. Pretty soon a homeless guy comes up behind us and starts talking to us, but whenever more people were in our sight, he backed away from us some. When we got to the car my mom said she was holding onto her cane so tight that she was ready to wallop the guy if he got to close, as he was the "cripple" that had been in the wheelchair, and she was sure he was going to grab our purses. (I, hadn't a clue! Once again, thank God for Moms!)
Since the MGM has opened, we have often wondered if it wouldn't be cheaper/better/safer to park in their FREE garage, and grab a cab to the Joe? It's only maybe 8-10 blocks away, I believe....
A homeless guy talked to you? Oh, the horror!

Researcher-I guess I did not make myself clear. We don't think he was homeless. It was an act. He was going to prey on two women walking alone in a parking garage.
By the way, I used to work near Detroit/Nebraska and my church is located near Lagrange and Summit. Being confronted by, and speaking with (HORROR!) homeless people, is nothing out of the ordinary to me. Which is probably why I didn't give a second thought to the guy who was following us.
Oh, don't sweat it. I was just joking with you. It's difficult to convey the full story through a forum post.

Agreed. Thanks. Come by our Spaghetti dinner (see my post) and I'll buy you a dinner.
For red wings games I like Nemo's (good hamburgers) or Z's Villa (good pizza). The parking is free the shuttle is paid. Greek town may be your best bet. Parking is free if you remember to take your receipt and get it validated.

Stooks - how was the concert? I'm going to the same show on Saturday in Cincy.

The concert was awesome. I've seen three Eric church concert and not once have I've been disappointed I love that he does songs from his other older albums! Kip Moore put on a really great show too...so did Justin.
Now lets talk about what happened last night.... My gps maps are apparently outdated and the exit that it told us to get off at was not correct and next thing we know we were in the line to the bridge to Canada. Lol we had to get a turn around slip and get searched by customs and then escorted out of the bridge area. Lol thank god we left early enough....but it was too late when we got off 75 to turn around.
Next the joe Louis arena parking garage is garbage and so was trying to get into the arena via these creepy tunnels. I can't say that I'll be going back to the joe again. Trying to exit the parking garage was terrible they had it marked poorly on how to exit and like most other things in Detroit it looks deteriorating and run down. :(
Of course that is just my opinion. It was worth it this time because I'm a huge Eric fan :)
southbound lanes were open last night. Easy drive home from Comerica
