I have to go to a black tie event next week, and am in need of a tuxedo.
Any recommendations on where to go to rent one? I've never worn a tux before, and have to admit I'm not looking forward to this! :)
Tuxedo rental in toledo?
Comments ... #
I can't think of the shop name off the top of my head, but there's a tuxedo shop in the same building as Petco. (Near Westfield, corner of Monroe & Talmadge.)
We had to get tuxes for my husband and son there when they were both in a wedding, and didn't have any problems with them.
The prices were reasonable, but I'm not sure what the regular price would be...I assume we had some sort of wedding party discount?
mom2 is describing Men's Wearhouse. That's the only place I've ever rented from. There's the location she's describing and they also have a store in the mall next to Claddagh.
I wouldn't say that any tux rental is reasonable - be prepared to spend somewhere between $150 to 200 for the rental. They really gouge you, knowing that you won't go buy one instead of renting.

Go sooner rather than later, as all of the chain places ship the tuxes in with the adjustments made, which takes a day or two.

That's still cheaper than what I had to shell out for being a bridesmaid in 1989. Sure, I got to keep the dress, but contrary to the bride's belief, it was NOT something I could wear again. :)
Upso, just curious: are you not looking forward to wearing the tux, or finding it?
Oh valbee, I feel your pain on the bridesmaid dresses!
We need some photographs to mark the occasion of upso in his monkey suit. Perhaps he'll be making an appearance in Barbra Hendel's society column? ;)

thanks for the help everyone.
valbee, i'm just not looking forward to getting measured by a stranger. :)
i'm very much looking forward to getting dressed up!
Just be sure they don't measure you like Joey Tribbiani's tailor, and everything should be OK.

I have purchased several suits from Men's Wearhouse, never had a problem. The store in the mall is a different company.
What size suit do you wear? I may be able to hook you up.
i'm not sure ace! i haven't been measured yet! :)
shoot me an email with more info! info@upso.org
You also may want to buy one at Jos A Bank. Their stuff is always on sale and you don't have to skeeved out about all the people who wore the tux before you.
Thoughts from my journey in suits and tuxes.
Not a huge fan of Men's Wearhouse. Had some good and some bad experiences. They do sell and rent tuxes. The purchase price may be close to the rental price. When you buy suits/tuxes there, the suit is cheap and the alterations are ala carte. I need a lot of tailoring, so I have gravitated toward the nicer stores with better suits. There is a difference. The cheap suit places get you on tailoring. ($250.00 suit/100.00 tailoring) The nice suit places get you on the suit and comp the tailoring ($500.00 suit/no tailoring fees). This can bring the price between a good quality and cheap quality suit to within a couple of hundred bucks, and over the ten year life of a well-cared for suit, it will matter. I find myself avoiding the Men's Wearhouse suits in my closet and wearing the nicer ones. People notice things like hand stitching.
I like the buying one from Jos A Bank idea.
You are not all that old, so unless your size and shape changes a lot, a decent basic tux might be a worthwhile investment. Nothing looks as nice as a well-tailored tux or suit. Alterations to fit you are good, but tailoring to fit you is the bomb. If you can use it three times in your life, it is worth it. It is really nice to have a tux in the closet. You'll attend more black tie functions knowing that you are well-prepared. Takes the hassle out.
Plus, you can get a monocle and it could be double duty as a Mr. Peanut costume.

If you want to look like a 30, 40, or 50 year old creep sneaking into a high school prom head over to Mens Wearhouse or Jos A Banks. They'll hook you up with an inexpensive, poorly constructed tux, that will fit you awkwardly, and you'll look spiffy in a teal vest and tie or some other peter pan arrangement.
Please visit a nicer establishment as a proper tux is designed to make you look better than any other garment you own. It's good incentive to not let yourself go once you've purchased it also.
Best online definitive source to guide you.

I didn't realize Jos A Bank was that low end. Never been there.
Jos A bank used to be decent stuff, but has slipped a bit (ok a lot) in quality. But for upso's purpose, it is probably adequate. Especially if he won't wear it again.
Btw, upso I sent you an email but didn't hear back.
hey ace
did not get the email
please send again! info@upso.org
If you're headed to one of the chains in the area, you're not really going to be getting something "quality". A suit or tux that's $500 is not a quality piece. But that doesn't really matter, depending on the use.
I used to like that there was a Brooks Brothers in the mall, even if it was one of their outlet locations. I usually have to drive up to the Somerset area nowadays. Then again, if you're looking to make a purchase, the internet is a magical thing.

You ain't gonna get brooks brothers for $500.
My view was more relative: starting at $500 will get you out of Joseph and Feiss or Geoffrey Beane and into Cremieux or Hart Shaffner Marx and into some better fabrics and hand stitching.
That's why I see a smaller gap between "cheap"
and "quality."
I wasn't trying to imply that you can buy a Brooks Brothers suit for $500, but you most certainly can. Just look at the clearance section of their website.

Re: local suits. I don't think you can buy a higher quality suit off the rack anywhere in Toledo anymore. If you go into Neil's or Michael David, they will just measure you up and place an order with their supplier (Samuelsohn, Hickey Freeman, or Southwick). They used to have a whole wall of suits. Not anymore. Brooks Brothers is good, but their prices keep going up. Most suits are priced at $1,098 now. You might be able to find a deal in their clearance section, but those are usually odd sizes and not staple colors (solid navy, charcoal).
All that being said, if you wear suits only for funerals and weddings (and you should wear suits on these occasions), I would wait for a sale at Macy's or Dillard's and grab a Hart Shaffner Marx in navy blue. Should be able to get one in the $400 range.

Agreed. I bought the last couple from Tom at Dillard's Westfield.
BTW... that Black Tie Guide from Mr.Glass419 was a good read. Has some good info in there.
I don't know who Tom is, but there is one guy at Dillard's Westfield that attacks you if you step into the suit section. All the "just looking" and so forth is not enough to dissuade him.
There is also a place in downtown Sylvania called V Concept that I keep meaning to go and check out, but haven't done so yet. They don't have a website, but their facebook page looks like they carry some brands like Canali and Pal Zileri
In kind of a rush, due to being out of town for the past several days I ended up going to Men's Wearhouse this afternoon. I'll report back on the quality, as I pick up the tux this friday but holy smokes what a smooth process! I was in and out in less than 20 minutes.
Jos a Banks- they have the most ridiculous shoulder pads in any jacket I've seen. Think 1980's women's power suit. You'll look like you strapped on the pads for a game of football.
Dillard's- if your chest is larger than your waist move on, they don't carry true athletic cuts.
Why does anyone think off the rack would be more advantageous than custom sized unless price or time is paramount?
Ps if you're wearing a Bowitie get a real one.

exactly. price and/or time. no need to make people feel like shit over it.
