Toledo Talk

Crime alert: Heather-Byrne-Glanz-Birch-Beverlydowns

Of the Toledo homes that I own, I choose to live in an area that I'd like to call Heather-Byrne-Glanz-Birch-Beverlydowns.

Following Chief Digg's leadership, I had security cameras on my house recently. There are more and more bad people walking the streets these days. We used to be concerned about crackheads. Now, all kinds of people act like that... you know... sell you a power tool at your front door that they just stole out of garage.

But let's get to it: I found a car door open this morning and reviewed the video.

At 12:23 a.m. last night an organized gang of 5-7 adult males came down my street as an organized patrol. One individual walked down the center of the street. A group of two men, both white, one heavy set, one medium, moved along my side of the street, trying doors, checking in cars. A separate group moved down the other. When my security light went on as they checked the two cars in my driveway, they were undeterred. They moved quickly, but did not run or rush. They moved together, as a team, all 5 within sight of each other. Their primary target was items in cars. Their secondary target was non-break break-ins of homes. When one opened something, the second guy joined the entry.

They were trying everything they saw, and only entering what was unlocked. But I'd hate to bust one unarmed and have to face all 5-7. Because you know that's how it is going to be. You don't go out in a gang if you aren't going to play the numbers card if you have to.

I will adjust my camera locations and angles thanks to their this test of the system. They entered one of my vehicles, but two were in the garage and the other was locked. They ransacked that vehicle. They took nothing. Some items were found around the neighborhood, according to neighbors.

Be advised of the following:
They are working just after midnight. They probably start around 11.
They were east of Byrne Rd. and north of Glanzman at 12:30a.m. last night, Monday the 18th.
They are in a gang of 5-7 individuals, wearing ski-stocking type hats and heavy coats, including Carhartts.
They are not stopped by motion lights.
They will try any doors or car doors in their path.
They are organized and moving like a military unit.
They should be considered dangerous. The size of the group and the fact that they did not run when the motion lights came on suggest that they are not a sneak.

I talked with a woman who lives in those condos on Glanzman about a year ago. She told me they had problems with people breaking into the cars parked in the lot. She said they weren't interested in stealing the cars just taking what was in them. So she started leaving her car unlocked and taking everything in with her when she came home. She preferred it to having to fix smashed car windows windows all the time. How sad.

Yeah. I don't leave things in the cars either.

I know that several other TTrs live in the area. I figure that if they are going to be that organized, we should be too.

If they have no fear of reprisals or police, why should you? Put on a ski mask and dark baggy clothing, load up the shotgun with birdshot, and start filling their backsides with shot. Don't warn them; just make an appearance around a corner while they're riffling through a car and start firing on them. No face shots, please. Plan your escape route carefully.

You don't know who they are, and they won't know who you are. But they'll remember your neighborhood is a place to end up being filled with birdshot.

No. But I wanted neighbors to know. Especially that they are not kids, as I would have assumed before I saw the video. My guess is that they are not even necessarily from around here. (Like the halloween kids, just saying... you go were the goodies are, right?)
They may do many neighborhoods.

If I had a good shot of a face I would have given TPD a thumbdrive. As it is, as many behavioral aspects that I was able to capture, I need to change camera location to get an ID-worthy shot.

@justread. For the sake of your neighbors and yourself, please (please!) contact the police or whomever you can to get the word out on this. Petty theft may not be that big of deal, but you don't know from one video clip what a group of people like that might be capable of.

Give the video to one of the local TV stations. Knowledge is power.

I live in the Ragan Woods area of South Toledo. We've been here 15 years. Three times someone's gone through the unlocked cars in the drive way. I usually leave mine out, my wife puts her's away.

I always assumed it was kids, but who knows. The once they took my wife's cell phone, but left her purse and credit cards. One time they took my loose change, but left the garage door remote (thankfully) and the third time all took was a half bottle of Advil and a bottle of tumbs out of by glove box.

I lock the car every night, but do forget every once in a while, so who knows how many times people have tried.

I'll give Mike a call and see what he thinks. I am sure that while they didn't take anything from me, they did from others. I just wish I had a face shot. I don't. If I had not backed that car in, and if I had a camera closer to the ground, I would have gotten a face. If I had a face, I wouldn't hesitate to provide it to the police at all.

My primary goal of the post was to alert neighbors that it is not "just kids," remind all that it is the crime season, and that they are more organized than you may think. I wouldn't want to confront a group that size, and I am roughly the size of herman munster.

About two months ago, I found a briefcase under a bush. In that case, I did call the police and together we figured out that it had been taken from the unlocked truck of a neighbor. In that case, we think that the motion light on my front door scared them when they ducked behind a pine to examine the contents. Thankfully, everything was recovered that time.

Unfortunately, I don't think that this is newsworthy without an ability to ID anybody. I'll tweak my system for better results.

We like to debate around here, but we are neighbors after all.
Be careful out there.

We have a similar group of thieves in my neighborhood (Laskey/Harvest) that hits neighborhood cars about every three months or so. Could be related; I do not have video, though, just the awareness that someone entered my cars. Maybe this is a fairly common tactic of roaming to find unlocked cars for quick scores.

I have lost approximately $0.37 to date, as one time they emptied my ash tray, which occasionally contains change. I have been in the habit of leaving doors unlocked in my cars while leaving nothing of value in them, as I have always been of the mindset that a busted car window is a lot more expensive than any trinkets they might find in my cars. Perhaps I will rethink this, as the open doors might be encouraging return visits.

One interesting thing I noted: some months prior to the last visit by thieves I had picked up prescriptions and stuffed the empty Rite Aid bag under my front seat instead of throwing it away. I found the Rite Aid bag along with that mountain of drug interaction papers in front of my next door neighbor's house. I am sure that the thief (thieves?) were momentarily excited at the thought of scoring some serious drugs, but unfortunately for the idiots the potential refills involved antacid, hypothyroid, and other mundane prescriptions.

And oh, I disagree, justread: video like this gets news stations geeked. Lots of people like to help solve crimes (or at least like to think they can help) and if there is anything like clear images of the perps, this is the kind of stuff that will draw a lot of hits to a website. I am a sucker for that type of "police need your help in identifying such-and-such perp" video when I run across one.

Heck: just upload it to YouTube and embed the video here, as you never know when someone will get recognized.

I thought the same thing HM. A half bottle of Kroger brand Motrin and a half bottle of antacid; both probably 6 months past their best used by date. I’m sure they saw a couple of bottles of drugs and thought they scored. Everyone knows I keep my kilo of heroin under the spare.

Just in recent months it was the somewhat grainy video from the Perrysburg mosque that got circulated and resulted in the capture of the sick freak who tried to burn the place down. You never know when the right person will recognize a criminal in a video, even a video of less than ideal quality. Sometimes it is the clothing, sometimes it is the way a person walks, or perhaps some other characteristic that tips off someone watching these videos.

At this point, it is easier for them to figure out who I am from the video than me to figure out who THEY are, so it is an added layer of security concern. The media or You Tube are not options.

Almost a year ago (Nov 29th I think) my car was broken into and laptop stolen while parked in the lot across from Mi Hacienda. While waiting for the police to arrive, the employee who came out to talk with us about it said they'd just had a car broken into there a few days before that.

(And no, I never heard from the police about anything.)

I couldn't think of a better way to end up getting shot yourself.

I'll throw in another vote for submitting to a local news station. Talk to the police and they may increase patrols. Put it on the news and not only will all of your neighbors hear about it but it will increase the likelihood that the police do increase patrols.

My personal sense of my civic duty included letting my forum neighbors know, my physical neighbors know, speaking with fred on air today, and allowing TPD to see it if they have a related investigation in process.

It does not include pitching the story to the media so that they can air the footage which would allow the unknown suspects to know exactly who I am.

"voting" for me to essentially identify myself to the suspects will not persuade me to do so.
But thanks for considering the safety of me and my family as much as I have considered yours.

GuestZero: yes, my sense of security and safety has been somewhat reduced by a thief going through my car on his heist of $0.37 and some empty Rite Aid bags, but my dignity? That seems a stretch; if anyone is undignified, it is a crackhead reduced to stealing change from someone's ashtray.

Losing my dignity would be if I happened upon the assclown and meekly said "OK, sir: please just don't hurt me" instead of the 20-pound can of righteous rage I would likely heap upon any idiot I actually encountered in the process of trying to jack my shit.

Go fuck yourself coward. You are forum cancer. No matter the topic, you are the superior expert. Even when you have no first hand information. You don't bother to read, but you stalk for "gotcha" opportunities. I thought that maybe you were just a completely dysfunctional socially stunted jackass in your home court, politics. But as soon as the election is over, you wander the forum for your little moments of Troll Zen. So, now the regular section is full of your threadpissing too.

You drag the fred thing in, not knowing why I spoke with him, in what context, or as a result of what causal factor. But it's a "gotcha." Yet, you have no clue.

You spew on about photoshop, not reading, comprehending or believing that the footage is not suitable for close ups. (Footage which you haven't seen, but are an expert on. Which I have seen, but my perspective is according to you, wrong.)

It doesn't occur to you that perhaps there is something so unique and easily identified in the footage that to "blur" it would be to render it completely unwatchable. But again, you haven't seen it, so you are an expert.

The pain of being "voted off" a forum with such bad a case of forum cancer is not as acute as you, someone whose ONLY validation comes from the forum, might think.

I don't actually have a problem, threadpisser. I don't have a security problem. Or a forum problem. To you, the forum is life. To me, it's a two-minute passtime between actual, interesting moments in an actual fulfilling life.

I am a very unlikely victim of most crime. Let's just say that my cone of protection extends much farther than cameras, and that I do not rely on the police to protect me. Trust me, this isn't my first rodeo with groups of criminals. I've put two in the emergency room and two in jail. Clearly, I am doing something right.

I wasn't looking for forum validation, threadpisser.
My concern was for others. That concern has been dampened by your piss.

I feel so sorry for you. I can't imagine what it would be like to be so inconsequential to the world in real life that you would have to be a threadpisser, not even sparing a thread in which somebody was so clearly trying to look out for their neighbors. Your only validation is found in "winning" threads. Even those that should have been left unpissed. Your socio-economic impotence must be staggering.

Thank you for the fine Thanksgiving lesson in why people should never extend themselves. Keep making the forum, and the community great.

AC has been around this board forever, never goes away, and is prone to outbursts of varying severity.

Sounds like Toledo Talk has been suffering from a case of herpes.

Hmmmmmmm, I hate to ask this question, but if the video is in the possession of the cops, doesn't that make it obtainable via sunshine/public records laws? How about if it's used in court?

I mean, if the video goes to the cops, you're identified to the perps when it's used at their trial, anyhow. If you don't turn it over to the cops, then dancing around going "I've got video of bad boys breaking into things in my 'hood", despite the good intentions, is drama queening. Especially if it is, as you are claiming, of such poor quality it is worthless.

At the very least, your antics on here has tipped the perps off that at least one house in the area they recently hit has cameras. So if I was a smart criminal, I'd be making a nice quiet casing of the streets looking for cameras so I know not to hit your area. Which means less chance of getting them on tape. And that may not matter since they know your image quality sucks anyhow.

Basically, dude, by being Mr Paul Revere/Neighborhood Tough Guy all over TT, waving your e-peener around on how you caught a pile of criminals on tape with your home security system, you've made it more likely they will NOT be caught by your system. You may have ultimately ended up spooking them off your street so they shift their turf and hit someone else. Then you bragged about putting people in the hospital, so they know you're gonna fight, so maybe they come through armed next time.

What you should have done, is drank a nice cup of STFU, gone to the police, let them handle it as the trained professionals they are, and quietly let your neighbors know to be on the lookout while the cops do their thing.

Cops could have maybe set themselves up a nice little bust. The "pissing" that happened here was you pissing all over the chances of that happening, and pissing on all the fire hydrants and lampposts in that 'hood to establish it as your big bad turf.

Your cunning plan clearly wasn't thought all the way through, and your misguided anger at me for pointing this out serves only to show what sort of an individual you really are.

Enjoy your holiday.

AC, you are nothing but a fucking low life piece of shit. And jr is just as bad for allowing you to post on here.

jr, have fun watching your site turn into another SwampBubbles. I'm done hanging around here.

Actually, the gist of AC's post is why crime tends to get worse in some neighborhoods but not in others. The neighborhoods where residents are diligent and visible tend to have much lower crime rates. Crime tends to increase in places where the people simply report to the police and wait for results. It's the reason Block Watch was created. They put up those signs exactly so the criminals know the neighbors are watching.

Beside, the complaints about AC are not so much about content but style. Some people just don't respond well to being harassed by someone who behaves worse than a pre-teen girl experiencing PMS for the first time.

JR, why you tolerate this kind of abuse is beyond me. Dell_diva's account should have been deactivated a long time ago, maybe several years back. But don't take my word for it. Ask anyone - AnonymousCoward, LineCrosser, McCaskey or GuestZero will likely provide an unbiased, non-judgmental opinion.

Of course, because I'm just a naturally kind, gentle and tolerant sort of person, I'd issue a warning and maybe a little time out. But that's just me.

IMHO jr has been quite limited in the number of users he has banned over the seven-plus years I have been a member of this community. His bannings have been largely limited to the psychotic creepers who delve into real-life stalkery (Coonie, Gary G.) or the occasional person with exquisitely awful comments (like the jackass who cheered the death of Peter Jennings some years ago, or the couple of neo-Nazi shills who mysteriously started popping up here around the time the same bunch of racist creeps decided to make Toledo a test case for race-baiting idiocy.

It is quite rare that jr actually bans someone.

As far as A/C: yes, some of his posts are incendiary, but he does not go beyond the level of a heated Internet argument in which cussing or smack talk happens. Yet the same can be said for at least a dozen other posters here: sometimes in the heat of argument some posters get quite angry. I know that I have posted some fiery responses over the years that I later wished I had skipped.

I think jr also takes into consideration the severity of a perceived offense with the total contributions of a poster over time. While I agree that A/C composes some responses that cross the lines of good taste on occasion, he seems to be a person with much to contribute to the site: I have learned some tech-related information from A/C, and he has linked to sites that were new to me, and even when I disagree with his politics, A/C certainly adds a unique perspective to the mix.

As far as this place turning into SwampBuubbles: unlikely to occur. Chris runs a different sort of site, but more importantly, people tend to eventually learn the evolved decorum of a given message board. This is not to say that TT is somehow elitist or culture élevée, but rather that there is generally a different type of conversation happening here. Also, SB is almost exclusively political, while politics is a small component of this site, which is much more likely to feature posts that relate to food, culture, and local events.

Getting back on subject...what would happen if local citizens sat on their front porch with their "problem solver" of choice? Would that solve the problem? Open a whole new can of worms? Would it show the undesirables to not mess around here? When will the time come when citizens take 'hood watch in their own hands? Just curious on what the TTers think.

Thanks AC. Here's a hoist of the evening bourbon glass and a tip of the old fedora to you Sir, for your kind words.

You know, what actually strikes me as somewhat ironic is that Dell_Diva really does want AnonymousCoward's account deactivated, largely in response to mildly inflammatory statements not directed at her, whereas if you actually asked him, AC would likely allow Dell_Diva to continue posting her vitriolic personal attacks against him without any official restraint.

HistoryMike is quite correct. Outside of Coonie the Lunatic and Gary the Drunk - and Limedrops! who could ever forget old Limedrops? - no one gets canceled and the place is not turning into SwampBubbles. In fact, SB got started because JR got tired of putting up with the crap, as I remember it.

Anyway, happy Thanksgiving to all of you. Here's How!

Hmm...About 25 yrs. ago (way back when my kids were little) the house two doors down was a rental and the new tenants started selling drugs from the front porch. I got peed off majorly. Calls to the police to complain didn't produce any results, even though they patrolled more often. So........... on "sale" days if I was home I stood across the street in broad daylight and in full view with a clipboard and took down "customer's" license plate numbers.

This seemed to bother the customers a great deal, judging from the anxious expressions on their faces as they raced in and out to get their stuff, many of them in some pretty expensive cars. The seller's gave some ugly and nasty shouts in my direction but no overt moves. I frankly didn't give a poop if they did. This was my neighborhood and these were my kids who were being subjected to this kind of activity. I wasn't about to run scared or hide. I'd do it all over again.

I had four dogs that were a noisy early warning system and neighbors who were home all the time watching. I didn't worry about reprisals. We worked such odd hours at the time with no set schedule that it would have been difficult for anbody to bother our property.

The tenants didnt last there long. Got kicked out for not paying the rent. Must have smoked their own profits.

Alive and well. After indulging in the current 'trendy' forms of social media, a return to the old-school, traditional, back-where-it-all-started Toledo sounding board sounded about right. Good to see at least some of the old-timers are still up to their hijinks.

It is sad to see that area going downhill. A lot of the older folks that were living in that neighborhood are dying off and little two bedroom bungalows just don't fit into the way people are living today. Couple that with the fact that Byrne and Glanzman is turning into a retail ghostland and it is no surprise that people are leaving. I hope that Beverly (my nabe) is able to hold on, but the fact is that the blight has crossed over from the Old South End, destroyed Acme (bounded by S Detroit, South Ave, Trail and Glendale) is moving over to the Harvard Terrace area and making inroads to the neighborhoods south of Glendale. I love Beverly and hope to stay there. If I were mayor, I would do all I can to preserve Old Orchard, Beverly-ish area and Ragan Woods. If those areas fall, I have to imagine it will have significant effect on revenues to the city from income tax. I know lots of people who are just holding on there and will leave if things keep getting worse.

Ragan Woods is only a shell of what it used to be and the Beverly area is quickly collapsing. I have family living right on Beverly Dr. and they have been burglarized twice in the last year. It's funny that Old Orchard has held out the longest. 20 years ago, I would have sworn it would be the first to go.

Huh? I live in Ragan Woods and we’re hardly a shell. I don’t have a single home for sale on my street, we’ve had a multiple young families move in in the last year alone and I know of 4 in ground swimming pools ($30K investments) that have been put in in the neighborhood.

The end nearest to what used to be Southwyck is nowhere near as nice as it once was. On the streets adjacent to Ragan Woods Dr. (both sides of Heatherdowns), there are a slew of properties available, including a handful of foreclosures. I am not saying the area is a ghetto, but it sure isn't the hot location it was from the 70s to the 90s/2000s.

^^^^^^

That is definitely true. The duplexes off Cheyenne used to be places for divorced dads and singles. Now it is looking kind of ratty. As for Beverly "quickly collapsing," I don't really see that where I am. I mentioned the attempted burglary across the street earlier this week, which was definitely disconcerting, but overall I think the residents keep up their homes and look out for each other. I'm not one of those people who is going to live in my house for the next 40 years no matter what, but neither am I going to head for Sylvania when I see a black kid ride a bike down my street. I don't blame anyone for doing it, but fleeing to newer housing further and further out only hastens the decline of Toledo neighborhoods.

posted by Ace_Face on Nov 29, 2012 at 07:13:42 pm     #

Ace - they definitely do, but my Uncle has been hit twice recently. Again, not saying it is a ghetto, but it has declined noticeably over the last decade. Believe me, I don't live in a paradise. In fact, we have an alarm and multiple security cameras over here in good old 43613. I can't think of a place in the city where I would "like" to live, but the economy won't let us leave just yet. As soon as we can, we are heading for someplace where the neighbors need binoculars to see me getting the paper in my boxers.

I lived on Beverly Drive in the late 90's. I loved the neighborhood. I noticed quite a few young couples moving in. The blight that surrounds Southwyck is truly disconcerting. The city needs to force the Clarion on Reynolds to either pay their taxes to the city or they should be foreclosed on! The Pizza Hut at Airport and Reynolds is closed and the Krogers on that side of Glendale (my Krogers!) is not lone for this world! The Radio Shack by the Tandoor is also moving to Maumee.

sigh I love my neighborhood behind Monette's Market, but I worry about my long term investment and the viability of south Toledo.
