Crime alert: Heather-Byrne-Glanz-Birch-Beverlydowns

I talked with a woman who lives in those condos on Glanzman about a year ago. She told me they had problems with people breaking into the cars parked in the lot. She said they weren't interested in stealing the cars just taking what was in them. So she started leaving her car unlocked and taking everything in with her when she came home. She preferred it to having to fix smashed car windows windows all the time. How sad.

Yeah. I don't leave things in the cars either.

I know that several other TTrs live in the area. I figure that if they are going to be that organized, we should be too.

If they have no fear of reprisals or police, why should you? Put on a ski mask and dark baggy clothing, load up the shotgun with birdshot, and start filling their backsides with shot. Don't warn them; just make an appearance around a corner while they're riffling through a car and start firing on them. No face shots, please. Plan your escape route carefully.

You don't know who they are, and they won't know who you are. But they'll remember your neighborhood is a place to end up being filled with birdshot.

No. But I wanted neighbors to know. Especially that they are not kids, as I would have assumed before I saw the video. My guess is that they are not even necessarily from around here. (Like the halloween kids, just saying... you go were the goodies are, right?)

If I had a good shot of a face I would have given TPD a thumbdrive. As it is, as many behavioral aspects that I was able to capture, I need to change camera location to get an ID-worthy shot.

So you didnt call the police to let them know that an organized and brazen burglary team was working the neighborhood? Why not?

I do not mean to blow petty theft into something more, but the way they moved down the street was unsettling.

@justread. For the sake of your neighbors and yourself, please (please!) contact the police or whomever you can to get the word out on this. Petty theft may not be that big of deal, but you don't know from one video clip what a group of people like that might be capable of.

Give the video to one of the local TV stations. Knowledge is power.

I live in the Ragan Woods area of South Toledo. We've been here 15 years. Three times someone's gone through the unlocked cars in the drive way. I usually leave mine out, my wife puts her's away.

I always assumed it was kids, but who knows. The once they took my wife's cell phone, but left her purse and credit cards. One time they took my loose change, but left the garage door remote (thankfully) and the third time all took was a half bottle of Advil and a bottle of tumbs out of by glove box.

I lock the car every night, but do forget every once in a while, so who knows how many times people have tried.

We have a similar group of thieves in my neighborhood (Laskey/Harvest) that hits neighborhood cars about every three months or so. Could be related; I do not have video, though, just the awareness that someone entered my cars. Maybe this is a fairly common tactic of roaming to find unlocked cars for quick scores.

I have lost approximately $0.37 to date, as one time they emptied my ash tray, which occasionally contains change. I have been in the habit of leaving doors unlocked in my cars while leaving nothing of value in them, as I have always been of the mindset that a busted car window is a lot more expensive than any trinkets they might find in my cars. Perhaps I will rethink this, as the open doors might be encouraging return visits.

One interesting thing I noted: some months prior to the last visit by thieves I had picked up prescriptions and stuffed the empty Rite Aid bag under my front seat instead of throwing it away. I found the Rite Aid bag along with that mountain of drug interaction papers in front of my next door neighbor's house. I am sure that the thief (thieves?) were momentarily excited at the thought of scoring some serious drugs, but unfortunately for the idiots the potential refills involved antacid, hypothyroid, and other mundane prescriptions.

And oh, I disagree, justread: video like this gets news stations geeked. Lots of people like to help solve crimes (or at least like to think they can help) and if there is anything like clear images of the perps, this is the kind of stuff that will draw a lot of hits to a website. I am a sucker for that type of "police need your help in identifying such-and-such perp" video when I run across one.

Heck: just upload it to YouTube and embed the video here, as you never know when someone will get recognized.

I thought the same thing HM. A half bottle of Kroger brand Motrin and a half bottle of antacid; both probably 6 months past their best used by date. I’m sure they saw a couple of bottles of drugs and thought they scored. Everyone knows I keep my kilo of heroin under the spare.

Just in recent months it was the somewhat grainy video from the Perrysburg mosque that got circulated and resulted in the capture of the sick freak who tried to burn the place down. You never know when the right person will recognize a criminal in a video, even a video of less than ideal quality. Sometimes it is the clothing, sometimes it is the way a person walks, or perhaps some other characteristic that tips off someone watching these videos.

Yeah- Call the Police that way they can attempt to patrol the area more if they know what's going on. This gives me a bad feeling. I hate that I feel afraid to go outside at night...and that someones going to do something. Luckily we have a garage to park our cars in.

In fairness to the area, my mom who lives in Sylvania Township said her neighbors reported similar incidences.

My mother lives in the area and has had her car rifled through a couple times. She varies between the "lock all the doors" or "leave it open and let 'em have all the laundry detergent and dog hair they want" choices.

As I mentioned to fred this morning, I'll figure out how to share this with TPD in a discreet way.
At this point, it is easier for them to figure out who I am from the video than me to figure out who THEY are, so it is an added layer of security concern. The media or You Tube are not options.

Almost a year ago (Nov 29th I think) my car was broken into and laptop stolen while parked in the lot across from Mi Hacienda. While waiting for the police to arrive, the employee who came out to talk with us about it said they'd just had a car broken into there a few days before that.

(And no, I never heard from the police about anything.)

I'll throw in another vote for submitting to a local news station. Talk to the police and they may increase patrols. Put it on the news and not only will all of your neighbors hear about it but it will increase the likelihood that the police do increase patrols.

My personal sense of my civic duty included letting my forum neighbors know, my physical neighbors know, speaking with fred on air today, and allowing TPD to see it if they have a related investigation in process.

It does not include pitching the story to the media so that they can air the footage which would allow the unknown suspects to know exactly who I am.

Actually, the gist of AC's post is why crime tends to get worse in some neighborhoods but not in others. The neighborhoods where residents are diligent and visible tend to have much lower crime rates. Crime tends to increase in places where the people simply report to the police and wait for results. It's the reason Block Watch was created. They put up those signs exactly so the criminals know the neighbors are watching.

Beside, the complaints about AC are not so much about content but style. Some people just don't respond well to being harassed by someone who behaves worse than a pre-teen girl experiencing PMS for the first time.

Getting back on subject...what would happen if local citizens sat on their front porch with their "problem solver" of choice? Would that solve the problem? Open a whole new can of worms? Hmm...About 25 yrs. ago (way back when my kids were little) the house two doors down was a rental and the new tenants started selling drugs from the front porch. I got peed off majorly. Calls to the police to complain didn't produce any results, even though they patrolled more often. So........... on "sale" days if I was home I stood across the street in broad daylight and in full view with a clipboard and took down "customer's" license plate numbers.

This seemed to bother the customers a great deal, judging from the anxious expressions on their faces as they raced in and out to get their stuff, many of them in some pretty expensive cars. The seller's gave some ugly and nasty shouts in my direction but no overt moves. I frankly didn't give a poop if they did. This was my neighborhood and these were my kids who were being subjected to this kind of activity. I wasn't about to run scared or hide. I'd do it all over again.

I had four dogs that were a noisy early warning system and neighbors who were home all the time watching. I didn't worry about reprisals. We worked such odd hours at the time with no set schedule that it would have been difficult for anbody to bother our property.

The tenants didnt last there long. Got kicked out for not paying the rent. Must have smoked their own profits.

Alive and well. After indulging in the current 'trendy' forms of social media, a return to the old-school, traditional, back-where-it-all-started Toledo sounding board sounded about right. Good to see at least some of the old-timers are still up to their hijinks.

Photograph, license plate and yard sign campaign will be next on my list of community policing actions. Letters to neighbors went out this week. Letters to police, city and county officials will as well.

It is sad to see that area going downhill. A lot of the older folks that were living in that neighborhood are dying off and little two bedroom bungalows just don't fit into the way people are living today. Couple that with the fact that Byrne and Glanzman is turning into a retail ghostland and it is no surprise that people are leaving. I hope that Beverly (my nabe) is able to hold on, but the fact is that the blight has crossed over from the Old South End, destroyed Acme (bounded by S Detroit, South Ave, Trail and Glendale) is moving over to the Harvard Terrace area and making inroads to the neighborhoods south of Glendale. I love Beverly and hope to stay there. If I were mayor, I would do all I can to preserve Old Orchard, Beverly-ish area and Ragan Woods. If those areas fall, I have to imagine it will have significant effect on revenues to the city from income tax. I know lots of people who are just holding on there and will leave if things keep getting worse.

This is sad. I went to Harvard Grade School for a couple of years and lived on Glendale, between the Trail and Broadway. Used to watch the 4th of July fireworks from our front lawn. We could here the zoo animals roaring, baying, whatever for the food on mornings during spring and summer.

Ragan Woods is only a shell of what it used to be and the Beverly area is quickly collapsing. I have family living right on Beverly Dr. and they have been burglarized twice in the last year. It's funny that Old Orchard has held out the longest. 20 years ago, I would have sworn it would be the first to go.

@Ace, I can promise you that we are fighting hard against blight in Harvard Terrace. We are a tight bunch and we are looking out for one another day and night. That's half the battle.

Huh? I live in Ragan Woods and we’re hardly a shell. I don’t have a single home for sale on my street, we’ve had a multiple young families move in in the last year alone and I know of 4 in ground swimming pools ($30K investments) that have been put in in the neighborhood.

The end nearest to what used to be Southwyck is nowhere near as nice as it once was. On the streets adjacent to Ragan Woods Dr. (both sides of Heatherdowns), there are a slew of properties available, including a handful of foreclosures. I am not saying the area is a ghetto, but it sure isn't the hot location it was from the 70s to the 90s/2000s.

That is definitely true. The duplexes off Cheyenne used to be places for divorced dads and singles. Now it is looking kind of ratty. As for Beverly "quickly collapsing," I don't really see that where I am. I mentioned the attempted burglary across the street earlier this week, which was definitely disconcerting, but overall I think the residents keep up their homes and look out for each other. I'm not one of those people who is going to live in my house for the next 40 years no matter what, but neither am I going to head for Sylvania when I see a black kid ride a bike down my street. I don't blame anyone for doing it, but fleeing to newer housing further and further out only hastens the decline of Toledo neighborhoods.

Ace - they definitely do, but my Uncle has been hit twice recently. Again, not saying it is a ghetto, but it has declined noticeably over the last decade. Believe me, I don't live in a paradise. In fact, we have an alarm and multiple security cameras over here in good old 43613. I can't think of a place in the city where I would "like" to live, but the economy won't let us leave just yet. As soon as we can, we are heading for someplace where the neighbors need binoculars to see me getting the paper in my boxers.

I lived on Beverly Drive in the late 90's. I loved the neighborhood. I noticed quite a few young couples moving in. The blight that surrounds Southwyck is truly disconcerting. The city needs to force the Clarion on Reynolds to either pay their taxes to the city or they should be foreclosed on! The Pizza Hut at Airport and Reynolds is closed and the Krogers on that side of Glendale (my Krogers!) is not lone for this world! The Radio Shack by the Tandoor is also moving to Maumee.

sigh I love my neighborhood behind Monette's Market, but I worry about my long term investment and the viability of south Toledo.

Lived in Heatherdowns-Reynolds area early 80's. It's not the same now. Agree with Dappling, Southwyck's a major problem.

I find Southwyck being a field better than the mall in it's last 5 years of existence.
