Another reason for me not to vote for Hillary, "O-shi, I'm running for president now and my views are incongruous with my voting base... hmm... CHANGE OF VALUES, ACTIVATE!"

Though I am fond of her efforts to advance the position of women in the company, to bad it didn't work.

Well of course they'd donate to her - she sat on their board of directors for 6 honkin' years!!

What - she doesnt mention that in her campaigning for that union vote??

Hmm - go figure!

Any of you shop at WalMart?

posted by Ryan on Mar 04, 2008 at 12:18:21 pm     #

Nope - I would if the pro union people'd get off thier asses and get other people to stop shopping there. I dont go because it's always too damn crowded.

No way - I try to do local as much as possible. Most of the stuff at Wal-Mart can be found at Anderson's or Appliance Center for comparable prices.

The dirty little secret is that Hillary isn’t a Liberal…she’s a pro corporation moderate.

As for her pandering…it’s called politics.

I would shop there if they had that kick ass trucker that the Sam Walton was wearing for sale.

His son was a major investor in First Solar until a plane crash which left his investment to his estate.

I posted an article how Target is cheaper somewhere. It seems renovated Meijers are trying to look like Walmarts, but with better hours (and I'm betting prices are relatively the same).

Hillary is a true socialist, I would put her on par with Kruschev.
Sound familiar, we will make a goverment that serves the people, get them jobs, food, health care.
Except once in office they gave the people free food just wait in a 4 hour line, healthcare, just wait for months for surgery, jobs, sure go work in the fields and nothing is yours its all property of the state.
If you listen close you can hear them plan how they are gonna take all the money from rich people and spread it to the poor.

Walmart is one my favorite characeristics of the naivete of leftist idealists. That Walmart is some kind of evil empire that requires constant surveillance when, in fact, it has 31 million competitors while the federal government is 11 times its size, has no competitors and commands the most powerful military on the planet. You go liberals! Don't take your eye off that Walmart!

You do know the difference between a retail outlet and the government, right?

posted by Ryan on Mar 05, 2008 at 09:28:12 am     #

Yes, Ryan, I think I do.

Retail outlets get their revenue by customers willingly trading money for value that the retail outlets must continuously prove in a competitive environment.

Government, on the other hand, gets its revenue by force after it undermines the constitution so that it can pervert democracy to pit one group of the population against another.

You are right, without the government we would all spend the day holding hands and singing Kumbaya.

posted by Ryan on Mar 05, 2008 at 10:35:13 am     #

If what you mean is that we would all get along and be prosperous - it is a matter of degrees.

I trust people. I believe they would get along better and be more prosperous without the government pitting them against one another to justify taking the result of their labor.

Perhaps you don't trust people to do that on their own. If you don't trust people, then who are you going to get to run the government?

posted by babbleman on Mar 05, 2008 at 10:45:15 am     #

I actually can see where you are coming from, but with tons of reservations. I still think that the majority of people would be up in trees flinging their crap at each other.

ryan, they already ARE. I don't know how old you are ryan, but seems to me, this country ran better when it had less govt. interference, rules, laws, bans, regulations, etc. The more govt. interferes & rules, the worse our country, economy & society as a whole, become.

And I've never been in a Walmart in my life - although my 83 yr old parents love it. I don't like Meijers much either - too big & spread out too much. Target isn't so bad - but I try to avoid shopping anyplace at all if possible, because I hate shopping. I do it online if I can.

According to this books a lot of government spending goes to the rich in the form of welfare:

Hey Ryan and babbleman: United we stand; divided we fall; and " one nation, under God, indivisible".

Who created red states and blue states?

Who created red states and blue states?

Taking your question literally, it looks like it came from a combination of the Hammond encyclopedia company in the 50's and David Brinkley in the 80's (at which point, interestingly, the colors were reversed).

But I am assuming the purpose of your question is much deeper. Can you elaborate? What's the point?

posted by babbleman on Mar 06, 2008 at 10:01:10 am     #

My small attempt at levity through sarcasm. In the 50's we had blue states & red states; differences in philosophy, but respect for differing points of view. Bottom line: ability to work together for the benefit of the entire country.

Now it's red vs. blue. "If you don't agree with me you're unpatriotic". So we change the color in Congress, and what happens? Nothing!

Both Republicans and Democrats from bygone days must be turning over in their graves!

Meanwhile in the real world...

Fed Official Faults Lax Regulations

The Wall Street Journal reports Fed Vice Chairman Donald Kohn "said the central bank failed to fully appreciate risks that financial institutions were taking before the recent credit problems, and it is reviewing its regulations. During a sometimes-contentious Senate hearing...Kohn said the central bank is likely to become 'more forceful' with the financial institutions it supervises." According to the Journal, Kohn "didn't explain what new actions the Fed might take, but he did warn banks to rely less on the assessments of credit-rating agencies. ... Kohn's comments mark one of the few times that a top Fed official has acknowledged shortcomings in regulation as a cause of the mess. 'I don't know that we fully appreciated all the risks out there,' he told the Senate Banking Committee."

Well, lew, I will respect your point of view but, quite frankly, I think it is the idea of "working together" that got us where we are. My dad says the same thing, "our problem is that we don't work together". He is from the Greatest Generation who, quite frankly, started all this "working together".

I mean, I appreciate what they did in the war - but in the final analysis, I don't believe that the jury is completely in on whether they actually won.

Someone wants to move 10 degrees left? Ok, let's "work together" and only move 3. Great. Next year, move 10 degrees? Well, let's "work together" and just move 3 more.

There has been a nonstop trail of "working together" with anti-capitalism for almost 100 years but especially in the last 60.

At some point, people need to get some moral testicles understand the clear line between good and bad and understand that you don't "work together" with the bad.

We should let business do what business does best...
buy politicians and regulatory agencies to create a level playing field for themselves. Call it a "natural" free market created solely by artificial means and rules. And we can pretend it all makes sense with slices of econometric models that don't account for externalities like real life.

Guess what, babbleman? I'm probably older than your father! I grew up in the depression. I still turn out lights in the basement that my grandkids leave on!

My dad was a Republican; my mom a Democrat. Guess what? They worked together.

Bill Buckley passed away a few days ago. He was the epitome of a right wing conservative. But you know what? He respected liberal points of view. He didn't agree with them. but respected them. He did not preach hate like the Limbaughs, and Hennady's.

I don't know what the answer is, but more of the same it is not!
The problem is, over the last 60 years we have looked to the government for leadership. That's what you do in Socialism. In a free market society, leadership comes from the private sector, but we refuse to lead, we'd rather bitch and moan about the poor job politicians are doing.

You may be too young to remenber the 70's &
80's in Toledo, but in those days we had The Committee of 100, made up of private sector business leaders, and a City Manager form of Govt.. That's when we built downtown Toledo. That's when people began avoiding going downtown on a Friday night because of the traffic jams. That's when Yogi Berra came out with his gem: "It's so crowded, no one goes there anymore"!

We did it before, we can do it again!
