Sidelines in Maumee

It looks like Sidelines is trying it again in Maumee. The previous Maumee Chophouse/table fortysomething/Celtic Pub building. Why, I ask? Why?

I agree. As I mentioned in another thread on this topic, I was involved in the Bavarian Brewing Company, so I already have the "once bitten" mentality for this area. And knowing the gentleman who ran the Chophouse / Table Forty 4 / Celtic Pub, (and the litany of failed attempts that followed in the Bavarian Brewery building), I just think this is an area that isn't going to prosper as it is. It's a corridor, not a destination.

I strongly believe in the strength-in-numbers formula for restaurants. That area is just a bunch of individual locations on their own islands. They're all very separated from each other. If they got together and made some kind of cohesive design with joined parking lots, etc, I think that would be a good first step in the right direction. But as that area is right now, I wouldn't advise anyone attempt to repeat the failures of so many others before them.

They've been looking to get back over there for awhile. Business was good over there - they only left because of problems with the building.

Isn't Sidelines and Fricker's the same style food? BW3's? Ralphie's bailed out. Can the area support another?

That's good news. Back when Sidelines was in the Brewing Company location, I went there plenty and was sad to see them go. Their ribs are fantastic... fall off the bone tender. Since they left, I made a trip downtown every year to the Smoke on the Water fest, and occasionally drive out to their restaurant on Mellwood for a fix, even though it's a hike from Maumee.

The upcoming location did okay for years as the Chop House. Something else is opening around the corner on Dussel in the old chinese buffet, so maybe business owners are growing more optimistic about traffic numbers with the new Kroger on the horizon.

I would rate Sidelines fare a notch above Fricker's in terms of quality. Their menu has lots of good stuff.

interesting! we were out to eat recently and sat next to some of the owners of sidelines who seemed to be excited about something new in the works. I hope they do well out in arrowhead park!

Speaking of Smoke on the Water, did i miss it this year or is the event defunct? I miss Big Moe's out of Kzoo.

I think it was cancelled this year due to the Promenade Park renovations. Hopefully, they bring it back next year or whenever that's all done.

Smoke on the Water, sadly, did not happen this year. Very disappointing. If it returns next year, be sure to give Carolina BBQ a try. Their food was amazing. So was the food from the local guy in Swanton - but, again, sadly, he and his wife divorced and the business went south I heard.

Two friends of mine re-opened Swanton's "Baldy-Q" mentioned above. The new name is "The Shack". I think they use many of the same recipes that made the place a favorite. The food is great and portions are very generous - my personal favorite is the brisket.
