Replace exterior door - fast!

One of my clients who is in a nursing home had his house broken into Saturday night. The side door was kicked in. I need to have the door replaced ASAP. Anyone know a place I can buy a steel door and get it installed same or next day? Thanks.

My mom's house was broken into the same way in early Dec. I called 2 places, and was told that they don't provide that service. My brother and I went to a store and bought a door and installed it that day. Fortunately we were/are pretty good at home repairs. Sorry about the break in, they seem to be happening more and more.

Definitely call around for prices if you have just a bit of time.

My 82 year old aunt had a similar situation (she wasn't home at the time--thank god). Back door was kicked in after assholes leaped the fence from the alley in back. First call she made tried to tell her it would be $1200 for the door and install. Ended up getting it for much less (obviously--she's 82, not stupid), but I'll have to ask her who she ended up going with.

She has a locking storm door now too. Not many perps are willing to kick in two doors.

I recently shopped around for a sliding glass door. Both Home Depot and Lowe's had doors in stock with delivery and installation running another $425-450, might be cheaper for a standard door. Not sure how quickly they would schedule though, I ended installing it myself with a friend.

Anderson's does it as well. But same day? Probably not. I'm surprised the gentleman's homeowners insurance company doesn't have a contractor that comes out the same day to board up the opening until a new door can be installed.

$1200 is steep, unless they were throwing in a 16-gauge hardened steel frame, state-of-the-art hardware, 2-hour service from the call, and the best god****n door money could buy.

I used to own some restaurants, and one store used to get the B&E treatment about every six months or so. It got to the point I wanted to just leave the backdoor unlocked, since they never stole nearly enough to cover the $600-$800 I used to spend every time the SOBs pried the metal door off the frame.

I used to use Ames Locksmith on Sylvania for my break-in repairs, and they also mounted new doors and frames as needed. I am not sure if they did this out of courtesy to me as a frequent customer, but they did great work at reasonable prices.

Depends on what the door is. My parent's front door was $1,700 without any sidelights or installation.

Have you called any contractors? I can recommend a few if you PM me.

True. If you look at luxury doors you could easily spend $5-$6K just for the door.

That house I'm working at right now has a front door that costs almost as much as a new car.

Nice to hear that there is money and activity flowing into the housing market. A sign of better things to come?

Depends on who has the money to spend. The one we are working on now is a million $$ home. Not a lot of people have that kind of money to be throwing around at the moment.

Those with money have money, its the rest of us that are hurting. Until they gather their pitchforks and march on the houses of those with money and drag them off to the guillotine and confiscate their cash they will stillhave money.

Heh - when we last needed a new front door we happened to see a soild hardwood door someone tossed at the curb two blocks down. It was a perfect fit, and after some paint and TLC, it looked great (it was already painted an ugly avacado green, and it was winter, so I was not about to get into a stripping/staining/polyurethane project). It is still hanging as I write this over a decade later.

Here is the freebie door, by the way:

door

While it has its share of dings and scratches, it is solid hardwood. You can't beat free.
