Ohio Interstate Speed Question and Rant

I just came home from a cruise, and drove from New Orleans to Toledo with my now fiance :)

Out of the 1007 mile trip I'd say 850 of those miles were all 70mph. From NO till the border of Kentucky and OH. Think the few times it went below 70 was Nashville or maybe one other metro and even then it dropped down to 65.

So why oh why is it still 65 in Ohio? Was so happy get back here, but hitting 65, 55, heck even several 45 mph areas in 6 lane highways just plan sucks.

Glad the Turpike is 70 now, but this is one of the flattest and straight road states I know. Even in WV where the roads are very curvy + snow + nice elevation changes, it has been 70mph for as long as I've been driving.

Never thought of it till tonight/this morning.

If it is any consolation, I have zipped by OHP radar cruisers while traveling 70-72 mph between Toledo and BG on I-75 and I have never seen the radar cops so much as blink at me. I know that this will not sit well with some folks, but I think the de facto pull-over speed is something in excess of 75 mph these days on the interstates, especially on the open highway away from heavy city traffic.

And we have a governor who is probably amenable to changes in traffic laws: :-)

In drivers Ed the cop who spoke to us had a tip "nine is fine at ten your mine" I to have driven past hundreds of cops at 7 or 8 over and never a problem. The Turnpike is a different story 6 over will get you pulled over in many cases.

Thanks everyone! Proposed to her on the beach in Cozumel, had tried for Jamaica or Cayman but couldn't get to the beaches there. Was a wonderful trip :) Hard to leave that 80 degree weather.

Back on topic, I'm an strong follower of traffic laws and never speed. But due to the long trip (17hour back) but took us 20.5 to get there I followed my fiances advise which another person hinted "5 is fine, 6 you're mine) so I was doing 70-75 most of the trip till I hit Ohio then I went by the book. Guess that's what made it so rough. Driving all day to hit 45mph on a 6 lane straight stretch after driving 13 hours about popped a vein. For whatever the reason is I can somewhat understand, but when EVERY other state from Canada to Mexico on our trip was 70 just felt like we're in a state-wide speed trap.

Stay our of Virginia then, they are asses about speeding, and radar detectors are illegal there. Also for what ever reason unless its been changed, as you drive north or east the exit numbers increase or decrease dont recall which but they are opposite in the other direction. So say driving into the state the 1st exit is numbered 1, but exit is numbered like 309 or something going the other way.

Imagine if while driving down I75 entering into Ohio from Michigan you get to Alexis road the first exit in Ohio and that exit was numbered #1 southbound, yet going north on I75 it was numbered #210, that is what i meant about messed up numbering.

I was thinking the same thing about the interstate speeds today as I was driving to Nashville from Toledo. I don't believe the turnpike accident rate has gone up at all, so they need to use that as a model to get the speed limit up to 70 on long open stretches of other Ohio Highways. BTW, it's a balmy 25 degrees down here. Hopefully Toledo will be a bit warmer when I come back in a few days.

Here is another thing I noticed- Went a couple years ago to Tennessee.... Driving through Ohio- cops everywhere.... Hit Kentucky and beyond, saw one- I believe in Tennessee... Same thing on the way back- Got outside Dayton and it was cop central all the way to T-town!

Completely agree that the OH speed limits are annoying. I-75 from Toledo south is so boring it makes no sense why it isn't 70. I like our setup here where rural highways (2 or 4 lane) are 65, interstates outside major urban areas are 70 (urban areas are 60-65), and the turnpikes are all 75.

With the technology available (cable barriers and such) there isn't much reason not to increase the speed in areas where it makes sense.

Has been and always will be a speed trap.

I agree with HM. I drive 70-74 mph all the time on I-75 through 65 mph areas and never have been ticketed.
