Best Places To Get Wings in NWO

On a less serious post, I was wondering what your top three places (in order) for wings in the Toledo Area are.

1) BW3's

2) Jeds

3) Frickers

Not rocket science - just wondering if I am missing a place I should be trying.

Swig! Maybe the best in town.

I like the pepper sauced chicken chunks at Trotters. My favorite basic hot wing is the Wings Express at Glendale and Bryne.

Swig with the raspberry chipotle sauce or Doc Watson's with the Gordo sauce.

Wings were great when they were $0.10 per. Now, I just can't get into paying $10/lb for the scraps of a bird.

Another vote for Swig. Try their Reverse Wings: tossed in ranch, then you dip in wing sauce.

BW3 isnt that good, always seem to be dried out.

Wings as in w/bone or w/o bone? The staple of toledo is Frickers or Jeds for Fireballs.

I like the wings at Dale's bar in Maumee. Not the largest wings, but always moist and tender, good selection of sauces (I like the hot garlic which isn't really spicy but has a good garlic punch).

For us, it's the wings from the deli at The Fresh Market. They're rotisserie wings - not battered, not deep fried. We get the "natural" wings and toss them in our own sauce du jour.

Stopped in last night and ordered a batch for next Sunday.

I'm go a bit outside of NWO and hit Monroe, MI for some good wings. They have a special on Tuesday for them. They are big, a bit crispy and have some decent sauce selections. If you live in PP or the NE of Toledo, it's not that far (about as far as Swig).

For standard buffalo wings I really like Pizza Papalis's wings.

Gordo sauce is a *must try *for sure. But I don't like Doc's wings. Too dry and tough. I usually get their chunks with gordo.

My favorite wings can be found at the former Toledo Hilton in the 3100 restaurant. Not sure why, just the combination of flavor, texture, meat quality, breading. They spoiled me for all other wings.

@justread: I have yet to try Doc's wings. Have been there couple times since it's close to my work and people from work like to meet there for drinks.

@Foodie: will try The Fresh Market wings for sure.

@Smbfc: Definitely will try this place very soon.

On a somewhat related note - Maumee Bay Brewing has the best buffalo chicken sandwich in town IMO.

Several years ago we were camping at Kelly's Island. After two days of rain we left the site and went to a place called Winking Lizards. 10am in the morning and we were eating wings and drinking bloody mary's like were pillaging the town. Best wings ever!

Winking Lizard is regional chain in Northeast Ohio. Kind of like their version of Fricker's, only with a much better beer selection.

Why did you have to bring up Winking Lizard. My friend took me to one of there locations couple months ago when I visited Cleveland. Good wings for sure. That and Quaker Steak and Lube is where Cleveland people go for wings.

Question: Is Maumee Bay Brewing still open? It was closed a few years back and was only open for special events. I ate their quite often and suddenly no more dining room I really missed the pizza. Is it reopened or did I miss something :)

I had no idea it was ever closed!
long story short, YES it is open! :)

Maumee bay brew pub open and busy. We were there last night for dinner and a tour of the building.
They still have excellent pizza.
My husband loves the duck wings.

Great news on Maumee Bay Brewing. I was present the night they did a practice night before it officially opened. Love the place. Then suddenly I went with the wife and they said it was no longer open to the general public, only for special events. This was a few years ago. I will be back soon!

Just checked out the website. I think I figured out what happened.

When Maumee Bay Brew first opened it encompassed the entire second floor. My favorite dining spot was through the door next to the bar and in the room with Oliver's portrait (done by Leslie Adams as was the outside murals).

They suddenly they closed that entire dining area and for a time closed the bar/brew area also. I recall at the time they talked about it becoming a steak house.

They then reshaped the original concept and it now appears that the bar/brew area is now the remaining eating area. Many may not even recall when the dining area was spread out through the second floor.

Mystery solved :)

What was the timeline on this - when did they close (before the reopen)?

posted by Foodie on Jan 27, 2013 at 04:48:07 pm     #

I'm a little fuzzy on this- isn't Maumee bay anything that's not Rockwell's, mutz, middle grounds, or the cafe? If so, does that leave the upstairs bar and the patio next to mutz. They all serve the beer... Or itS it all under the umbrella of the brewery?

The Oliver House is the entire complex: http://www.theoliverhousetoledo.com

This is the beer brand: http://oh-maumeebaybrewingco.com
This is the pub: http://www.oh-maumeebaybrewpub.com

They have quite a few brands or as they call "venues" all in the same building. Must be crazy to manage the place!

I really like the large wings at Wings Station (Wing Station?) at Secor and Sylvania. And their Greek Chicken Salad.

so... holy crap
QQ Kitchen has THE BEST wings!

Asian inspired, sweet, salty and spicy. Oh my word!
The texture is crispy and sticky and wow... so good.

They are currently on the special board, and word is they are working on a food truck to maybe sell these and some korean tacos in the future but yeah... daaaaaaaaamn good wings if you like asian flavors.

I'd love to see what these were like with a buffalo sauce, but I don't they'll be putting that on the menu any time soon. ;)
