I just drove south on Reynolds Road and passed an enormous rubble pile right next to the road. I think one of the 5 - or 6-story vacant hotels near the turnpike has been torn down.

The old Ramada/Holiday Inn/rat trap?

The old Ramada/Holiday Inn/rat trap?
Probably better to ask which side of the road. You might remember Holiday Inn and Ramada swapped properties several years back.

Is it that Days Inn that shut down a while back? Maybe the blocks around the new Kroger at Reynolds/Conant and Dussel are getting cleaned up in anticipation.
If it was the old Clarion at Reynolds and Heatherdowns [or even if it wasn't] someone posted an interesting group of photos online:

I'm guessing you are referring to the demolished car dealership at the corner of Conant and Dussel.
Those pictures upset me. The owners of that hotel are way behind on their taxes. Why isn't something being done?
There is something really unsettling about those photos. It is as if they walked out one day and that was that.

It is like they walked out one day; and then crackheads, homeless, and vandals (Plus at least one photographer) climbed in through the broken window above the front entrance overhang, illegally.
Did they have to climb? Looked to me like they could just walk right in the front...
Yeah, for a long time, the front door was secured, but a window into the second floor was open above an overhang. I noticed it driving past, and I saw it reported in the media in a story about the property.
I think that it was boarded up later, perhaps by the city.
It's hard to believe this was still open as recently as a few years ago. When I was a bored kid at the mall back in the day, a buddy and I used to walk over and look out the hall windows on the top floor... nice view from up there. The tv in the pool was kind of funny, but leaving the plants to die was borderline criminal.
It is the tallest building in south Toledo, isn't it?

It is hard to believe...but not too hard. After looking into urban exploration for a few years, I have been constantly surprised by how quickly a building will deteriorate if it is not secured and maintained. It happens FAST, and not just in 'bad' neighborhoods.
Do property owners normally leave everything behind like that?
It would seem that they could have sold some of the furnishings or appliances? Heck, even donated to the Salvation Army or something?

That would involve giving a shit about the community and the property and the environment. If they couldn't even pay their taxes, as any responsible business would, you can guess what kind of ownership held the property.

^^
That's why I mentioned selling the items first - even if they weren't inclined to donate, you'd think that they might want to recoup any possible cash. LOL
I think if the state steps in for failure to pay taxes the company loses everything, furniture included.

So... has it been confirmed yet what building has actually been torn down? The conversation seems to have shifted to the poor state of the hotel in the photos, but not about what was actually demolished.
Good question. I'm about to make a run to the post office. Will report back.
All hotels are still standing. The rubble pile is farther south on Reynolds at the old car dealership.
Good call, Slowsol! You called it early and you called it correctly. Thank you Mixman for the reconnaissance.
Yes, checked it out yesterday. That includes the hummer dealer, which seems like a real shame, it always struck me as a very cool space for a restaurant. It had a cool upper level atrium and it was all glassed in. Probably completely impractical, but looked cool.

Because it's kind of like that old saying about owing the bank a little or a lot of money. If you owe the City of Toledo a little property taxes, you're in trouble... the city can make a profit on taking your property. If you owe the City of Toledo a lot of property taxes, the city's in trouble... since taking the property can't recover what's owed.
What I've never understood is why the city doesn't go after the assets of these rich guys in the first place. Back PTs are just a debt that can be settled from seizures. I suspect that the city runs up against what's really a power game; the city needs the rich guys and developers more than the rich guys and developers need the city. Of course the city has no such problems with individuals like you or myself; there are hundreds of thousands of us. Always more where we came from.
Of COURSE!
It's not a deadbeat problem, it's a "rich guy" problem.

Drove past the site Friday 2/2. Six protestors were out in front alleging the demolition project is being done by non-union workers.
Did Kroger buy that parcel to build a humongous new store?
The contractors Krogers use are all non-union.

One thing that may explain the terrible condition of the hotel is that apparently there was a group that stripped all the copper out of the building a few years ago. Obviously, this is not a small project, but they were able to do it over the course of several months without anyone noticing.
But what I remember about that hotel is our fraternity homecoming there in the fall of '91. I feel bad for the guests that came out of their room to see drunken youths (and not so young alumni) doing beer bongs and shooting off fire extinguishers in the hallway. Needless to say, we were not invited back, lol.

If everything in the building is secured to lenders, yes, an owner may just walk away without trying to take anything because technically they can't take it. I remember when Cookers Restaurant went under - they didn't go to bankruptcy, they just closed the restaurants, told employees sorry (via a note on the door IIRC), and walked away. The owners/landlords of the buildings were left with a mess because they didnt know who may or may not have an interest in the furniture, equipment, etc.
