HALF-TIME SHOW

Watching now. My God she is terrible. Voice is thin, hollow timbre, backing tracks playing, she keeps glaring at the camera. It isn't sexy she looks silly gyrating around the stage.

For every line "sung" she gyrates fr 2 minutes.

Nasty stuff.

Yawn. I spent most of the halftime show dusting some shelves and caulking around a window.

I agree. The last good half time show was in 2002 when U2 did a tribute to all those lost in the 9/11 attacks.

She'd look great spinning around a stripper pole, and I'd be there with wad of one dollar bills. :) Seriously though, her singing, Ehh. I still just can't believe she married Jay-z. That is one ugly dude.

The Who was reasonably entertaining, at least for 60-somethings who have lost two bandmates over the years. Paul McCartney was decent, Springsteen rocked, U2 ruled, Aerosmith sucked, Tom Petty was respectable, The Stones were creaky, Prince was pretty damned good, and then there is a huge drop-off.

You can see my classic rock bias: I yawn at most of the boy group / girl group/ pop diva stuff.

Prince was amazing a few years back. I recorded the performance in HD and when I play it for folks they are always amazed.

Springsteen always gives 100% even if he has become somewhat of a "poser" in his old age.

Considering the challenges in trying to do an arena show in the round in a stadium that size, at the same time as a TV production, with live sound, monitor mixes, TV sound, complex light show, and 6 minutes and thirty seconds for volunteers to set everything up with no margin for error.... it was fine. Some of the technical aspects were pretty cool, and new.
The TV cameras didn't catch Desiny's Child being catapulted up on stage very well... but they did catch some of the video backdrops, some of which were kind of cool.

from music insider bob lefsetz...
And you wonder why Adele is the biggest musical star in the world.

No dancing, just singing, what a concept!

I wasn't sure what to do after Beyonce's appearance, join a gym or masturbate. It was spectacle befitting the game, one could argue strongly it was more dynamic and exciting than the game. You had no desire to check your Twitter feed, all you could do was pay attention.

But how much did this have to do with music?

Who do we blame? Madonna? Who invented a new paradigm and then went for a victory lap wherein she dieted down to nothing and spent hours a day working out? Do you think Adele works out? Ha!

Beyonce made Madge look old. She proudly strutted her luscious thighs, in one fell swoop making a whole swath of America's women feel good about themselves.

Yes, there was nothing wrong with Beyonce’s appearance.

But what was right?

Do we even care if she lip-synched?

This is pure commerce. Sponsored by Pepsi, as if Ms. Knowles has sipped the sugar water in years. The thought of her drinking Pepsi is akin to believing Alicia Keys uses a BlackBerry!

The show was an assault.

Blame the CD, where subtlety doesn't sound good. Blame hip-hop, which is laden with attitude. But tonight’s performance was one big step back for music itself.

Then again, the Lumineers are bigger than Alicia Keys, and maybe even than Beyonce. And Mumford & Sons sold more records than both of them.

The major labels still haven't gotten the memo. They believe if they just throw enough production at the public, people will be overwhelmed.

But what people want most is music. When done right, you need no dancing, no production other than amplification.

If you watched Beyonce tonight and thought about the music, you're blind.

But credit the NFL. It finally entered the twenty first century.

But if you truly want to triumph at this sporting extravaganza., watch Prince’s performance He knew the music came first. Lead with the tunes, dazzle with your personality. Tonight’s performance had it backwards.

Agreed. Wasn't my tastes, but that's ok. Kind of the nature of half-time entertainment. It ain't a concert. I'm not a Beyonce fan, but I'm not a hater either, so I can be a little more fair minded than calling her names and being all shocked and offended.

I had my TV off. I only turned it on after reading some status update about the power being out, just to see what sort of chaos and panic were ensuing, if any. Then I turned it back off.

How about next year we start a consumer backlash against the price of our stuff being jacked up to pay for 30 seconds of advertising and the continuing employ of a pile of worthless idiots (marketing departments)? I'd bet the cost of health care would take one hell of a drop if we made prescription drug commercials illegal just like we did with cigarette ads. Oh shit, just imagine how much less drugs would cost if Pfizer and GSK and so on didn't spend $5-6 billion a year just on advertising.

I had a whole response, but figured I'd condense it...

No advertising of anything = millions of salespeople out of work and astronomical entertainment costs.

That "free" TV ain't free...and your cable bill only pays part of the cost for those cable channels.

As for banning drug advertisements, good luck reversing several Supreme Court cases dealing with commercial speech, starting with Virginia State Pharmacy Board v. Virginia Citizens Consumer Council (1976).

Look I don't think we should be lifting up people who are going to give themselves a real health risk by being overweight, this "love your body no matter what" movement has gone to far. If you have "folds" or can't see your feet, that is not something to be proud of. Get help, don't lose years off your life too food.

I was thinking about what has happened to make female entertainers think they have to look like sluts. Historically, female singers didn't have to slither on the ground in non-existent "costumes" to become popular. Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Carole King, Diana Ross, etc. relied on their talent.

I've come to the decision that it is the thug hip-hop movement that has caused this. Woman are sex objects to these losers and the entertainment industry has succumbed to the lowest common denominator. What should we expect from someone who is married to Jay-Z?

Based on your music collection, I’m guessing you haven’t bought or listened to anything new since the 1970’s. As a guy who grew up on big hair metal bands in the 80’s and 90’s, there were plenty scantily clad women to go around.

Sexy women and music are hardly a new together and not by any means “caused by hip-hop”. Beyonce isn’t all that different from Madonna from 20 years ago…

Elva, I've been listening to Joni Mitchell as of late. Phenomenal musician! I agree with a great deal of what you said.

Over the last few years I have learned there is a lot of really good music being played and created but finding it requires much more effort. Well, not really - I mean, there is the internet but you just have to get away from what is being marketed as "this great new thing!" and actually find what is truly exceptional and creative.

Hip Hop didn't help but even the soldiers in WWII were inspired by beautiful pinup girls. I hope most people recognize the beautiful sexual side but can also be respectful. I think it is great to be beautiful and even have the ability to share that beauty and sexuality. However, if my doctor is beautiful she better also know how to diagnose and if I'm going to listen to some music I want to hear a true musician - not a dancer that can't sing or write music.

Do some rap and hip-hop artists promote the objectification of women? Of course. Do some rap and hip-hop artists use lyrics that degrade women? No argument from me.

But to argue that gangsta rap (a more accurate term, by the way, than "thug hip-hop movement") is the source of the onjectification and/or degradation of women is awfully short-sighted. This has been a-happening for a long, long time.

Of course, maybe Peter Paul Reubens and Jay-Z go way back:

Apparently, this Illuminati shit has people who have Cheetos for brains and nothing else to do in their lives worked into quite a tizzy:

Huffington Post: Blue Ivy Carter: Why Did Beyonce And Jay-Z Choose That Name?

There are also some more bizarre theories surrounding the name. There's the crazy theory that Blue Ivy is an anagram for the name "Eulb Yvi," which some have claimed is Latin for "Lucifer's daughter" or that Blue stands for "Born Living Under Evil" and "Ivy" stands for "Illuminati's Very Youngest." All of these ridiculous theories of course stem back to equally ridiculous rumors that Jay-Z and Beyonce are members of a secret satanic cult called the Illuminati.

While these allegations are obviously insane, International Business Times points out that there is no indication that "Eulb Yvi" even means "Lucifer's daughter" in Latin. Google translates the word "daughter" into "filia" in Latin, while "Eulb" and "Yvi" are not recognized as a Latin words.

To quote from Jay-Z and Kanye West's song "Paris" --"That sh*t cra[z]y."

No way. Just no way. Good grief. That's just cherry picking some angles with a certain set of muscles prominent from an atheletic move. What is your real problem? Because this isn't a valid critism not to like her or her performance.

Exactly.
There is a problem, here.... but it isn't beyonce's weight.

That username has posted a number of blatantly racist things in the past. No reason to pay much attention.

Gotta have a little meat on those bones. Not everyone needs to be 110 lbs soaking wet

The combination of scanty clothing and athletic performance makes all kinds of muscle groups pop out. I bet there are similar photos of beach volleyball players, in case anyone wants to search the web for that ;-)

Fat girls do more.

Beyonce and Kate Upton may not have the same Hollywood heroin chic body type as other celebrities, but that doesn't mean they are "fat" either.

1.) She's not fat.

2.) So what if she was?

3.) Kate Upton makes me want to be Justin Verlander for a day. Well, make that a week...

4.) Regarding the "heroin chic" body: My wife and I were just talking about this a few weeks ago in reference to an actress on a long running TV show whose baby fat has disappeared and her boobs have seemed to shrink, compared to how she looked in the early seasons of the show. I think the industry (film or recording) gets these girls and their handlers tell them "oh, you'll look even better on camera if you follow this vegan diet and lose about 15 lbs." when they're already 115 to begin with. And of course these women are already insecure about their jobs, their bodies, they'll do anything to secure what they have, so they drop the weight because "the camera loves it".

And judging some of the comments here, I guess they're right to be paranoid about being normal size and appearing in front of cameras. They'll look "hefty".

I think that some of the comments on here are calling her fat because they can't call her what they really want to.

Funny thing is, Star56 is a guy in his mid 50's who eats at McDonolds "several times per week". I'm guessing the camera wouldn't need to be angled much.

Be thankful that some of us are too polite to say what you are and where the camera should be pointed.

I'm poking fun at the racist and MJ comes to troll me...not surprised.

Shouldn't expect much else really. Remember he's hunkered down in that bug out bunker, cradeling an AK, paranoid the government is coming to get him. Might have sniffed a little too much gunpowder. Cheery existance, that.

Even the half time show is about "gun nuts" now.

Man, people need to learn a new routine.
Be like Beyonce... learn a new act once in a while... keep it fresh.

Justread, what Holland is referring to is Madjack's neurotic need to troll Holland and I for no other reason than be don't always say nice things about guns. This makes many threads where MJ hasn't contributed a thing, makes no effort to participate other than being a troll.

posted by SensorG on Feb 08, 2013 at 08:24:10 am     #

I get that part.

Plenty of things to do with trolls. You can ignore them, you can make a funnier joke than they did. You can ask them not to troll. You can leave them hanging out there so it is a one-sided troll. That makes them look the worst, I think.

While I enjoy some of his work, I think that his comment in this case was a swing and a miss in terms of clever. My thought was "oh MJ, that was a turd."
When he is funny, he is funny as hell.

Not sure where the AK/bunker crap came from, because he is socially active. You are either at the Rep, out enjoying dinner at Mac and Tongs or in a bunker. Not both. I am getting sick and tired of people resorting to exaggerated, hyperbolic references to legal gun owners, making insinuations that they are crazy, unhappy or lonely.

If somebody is being a jerk, call them a jerk. Leave the bunker/AK47/gun hugging/paranoid for cases that are real.

The whole gun hugging/bunker/Ak thing is wearing thinner than trolling.

When you leave the troll alone, it is much more clear that they are trolling, rather than a two-sided argument.

The comment wasn't meant to be funny nor clever; it was a rebuke to SensorG for his needless inflammatory post about Star56. Basically, I got sick of his greasy little mouth and decided to say something about it rather than let another one slide. Given that I know what I'm talking about (see the comment and take it literally), I'm surprised he had the cojones to post a snarky response.

You should have stopped your comment there.

You’re a sad drunken troll and if my calling out a guy’s body type hypocrisy, borderline racist shit and desperate need to prove that Beyonce really is some woman to be ridiculed for her obesity somehow provokes your pathetic response then it really is reflection on you.

Take your bottle and head back under your bridge.

How is calling someone "fat", an example of "borderline racism"? And just exactly where do YOU get off by indicating she is "obese". Why don't we agree Beyonce is neither fat OR obese, but more like Mrs. Bill Clinton-----i.e., she suffers from the "ample arse" syndrome?

My critique of your post was no less needless than the post yours followed.

But I do appreciate the funny posts and the colorful storytelling quite a bit. Maybe I was bummed because it wasn't something hilarious. Selfish, I suppose.
