Fresh Fish

The other half and I like to cook great food at home when we can, and we LOVE a nice tuna steak, but we've had a hard time finding them with any regularity outside of a freezer case. We are open to learning some other local/regional fish dishes to make, but still nothing beats a lightly seared and barely seasoned piece of high-grade tuna.

Where is the best place to buy fresh fish around here? What is local and safe? House of Meats is majorly hit and miss it seems. Kroger seems over priced for the low-mid quality I see there. Thoughts?

The Fresh Market at Westgate; The Fish Market on Telegraph just over the line in Michigan. Rohr Fish on Monroe used to be pretty much the only game in town and was quality - today, not so much. We've also had good luck with Costco's fresh, Pacific Cod.

The Fresh Market most always has quality fresh tuna steaks. Good luck - let us know what you find/make.

Costco also has the traveling fish market. Is that any good?

Costco's traveling fish that usually have on the weekends doesn't normally include tuna. Try one of the Asian/Oriental markets. The sushi grade flash frozen is really quite delicious, and usually cheaper than Fresh Market. We've always had good tuna from The Fish Market on Telegraph, just north of Alexis - and they can special order for you if there is something special you need.

As Maggie mentioned, I've also never seen tuna offered by Costco's traveling fish market. That said, we've enjoyed the Tiger Shrimp (previously frozen) they always have on it. It's deveined and shell-on so you can do whatever you want with it. Of course, they have the same shrimp on hand - frozen - all the time.

We've also purchased the Mussels numerous times. They've always been good quality - very few in the bunch that aren't alive.

Have not yet tried the Snapper, scallops or crab.

Walt Chruchill's-Most of their fish comes from Foley's out of Boston. They also do a seafood road show. While not a huge selection (they probably keep it fresh this way)-they have great diver scallops, salmon, several tuna, assorted other fresh fishes (I've seen grouper, cod, etc). Also, King Crab legs from time to time, shrimp, mussels, oysters. The deli counter is right next to the fish counter-you can't smell fish if you try. At The Andersons-20ft from the counter stinks like rotten cat food.

@ ahmahler -- Funny you should mention that. We were at The Andersons Talmadge Road store on Sunday. The fish counter reeked of bad fish. Unbelievable. It was stomach-churning.

As for fresh fish overall, I'm also a big fan of Fresh Market's selections. Better than Rohr's.

Doesn't House of Meats also operate the "fresh" fish concession at The Andersons'? If yes, that would explain it.

perhaps it's by design to cover up the stank of House of Meats, yuk!

House of Meats and the Fish counter at Anderson's are not the same ...

I've purchased the tuna from Costco numerous times and each time it was delicious. Upon opening each package the smell of it was exactly what you would expect, of the ocean, not Friskies buffet.

I've not seen tuna at Costco - is it frozen? Something they always have?

RobJeff: I was at Walt Churchill's Mkt in Maumee last night and checked out the fresh fish. They had fresh tuna that looked amazing. Steaks cut to your liking.

I purchased some tuna just yesterday for a surf-n-turf dinner. It was very good. It is not frozen, it is always located in the first cooler with the other seafood, sometimes they don't have it.

Thx MI. I'll have to check it out.
