NRA 1999 vs. now

First, we believe in absolutely gun-free, zero-tolerance, totally safe schools. That means no guns in America's schools, period ... with the rare exception of law enforcement officers or trained security personnel.

We believe America's schools should be as safe as America's airports. You can't talk about, much less take, bombs and guns onto airplanes.Such behavior in our schools should be prosecuted just as certainly as such behavior in our airports is prosecuted.

Of the 6,000 young people the President acknowledges were caught with a gun at school during the past two years, we believe all of them should have been prosecuted. But the truth is that only
5 were prosecuted in 1997 and just 8 in 1998. That's not zero tolerance.

[...]

We support restoring full and perpetual funding for the National Instant Check System, which was the product of this Association's determined effort. It is a federal crime for a felon to try to buy a gun. So for the quarter million prohibited buyers President Clinton claims were turned away, we believe his Justice Department should have prosecuted more than zero in 1996, zero in 1997 and zero in 1998. That's surely not zero tolerance.

We believe that people adjudicated mentally incompetent should be prevented from buying guns. That's the law. But it can't be enforced because those records are often sealed. So we advocate that records of court-declared mental incompetents be unsealed and made available to the instant check system. Believe it or not, i*nsanities like John Hinckley's would not prevent a gun purchase today because most mental records are invisible to the instant check system.* Let's close the Hinckley loophole!

[...]

We have always supported the American tradition and right of private sales of firearms between lawful adults, friends and family. Gun shows are simply an extension of that freedom. But the NRA insists on absolute adherence to the law, with zero tolerance for any unscrupulous or illegal activity at gun shows, just like anywhere else.

We will consider instant checks at gun shows when, and only when, this Administration stops demanding new gun taxes and stops illegally compiling the records of millions of lawful gun buyers. Government list-keeping surveillance of law-abiding citizens is never a good idea.

Ooohhh oohhhhh what was the stated Democratic Party position of 1958 on the Civil Rights Act? What is it now?

posted by MikeyA on Feb 17, 2013 at 02:47:04 pm     #

So...1999 and 1958...? 14 years versus 45 years? You consider these to be comparable time frames for the evolution of a collective philosophy?

posted by Sohio on Feb 17, 2013 at 11:43:24 pm     #

*55 years. Scuse me.

What has changed in the Democrat Party since then? Other than being taken over by socialists?

You should put a "/sarcasm" tag around your posts so we know you're not actually this stupid.

More telling is that this is what WAYNE LAPIERRE said in 1999, and compare to what he's said in the past couple months.

A few things have changed in the Democratic party.

1. In 1964, Strom Thurmond left the Democratic party, presumably for a party that was willing to evolve from its roots to more closely fit his backward-thinking segregationist views...turned out to be the Republican party.

2. Soon after, Nixon's SOUTHERN STRATEGY helped cull countless more southern Democrats away from the Democratic party to the Republican party in a similar fashion.

Do you have a cogent point to add to AC's original post? Or, are you just here to deflect criticism away from the NRA by straw-manning the Democrats? Maybe you need to start a 'what I think is wrong with the Democratic party' thread of your own?

Aw hell. Let's apply it to everybody. Both sides. I'm game. Let's all throw one out there.

Here's one: Republican Jim Inhofe:

I do understand what you are saying.

1. A quick turnaround from a single-issue lobbying group in 14 years is the same thing as a long, slow evolution over 55 years by a major political party.

2. No point in discussing the NRA flip-flop, since other people flip-flop too.

I get it, mikey. #1 is a false equivalency and #2 a red herring. From what I have seen, you use those a lot. There's no need for you to explain either one further, since you can't anyway. I already explained it for you.

I will give you one thing, mikey: nearly every argument you put forth is fallacious horseshit; but you stick to the arguments very self-assuredly. I sincerely admire that. Confidence often wins over facts.

Republican Chuck Hagel?

Doesn't matter what party he is in, hes up for nomination he has said what some would call antisemitic things in the past, but now that he's up for nominations by the president he either cant recall or passes it off as not his current position. The fact is had this been a nomination under Bush you can bet the media would be rounding up every old sound bite it could get its hands on and questioning the validity of his qualifications to be nominated. Instead they are playing clips of Sen. Rubio taking a drink of water.

My post was to make a point not draw a direct comparison.

A red herring eh? My point wasn't to distract, it was to show that AC's indignation was feigned and not sincere. Sorry you missed that. In fact if you want fallacious horseshit he's got a barn-full.
