Mancy's Italian

I noticed that Mancy's Italian was closed for a few days for what was posted as a kitchen remodel. I know it had received a bad restaurant health review. Any insight?

They've been posting updates on their facebook page. Looks like the kitchen got a complete overhaul, so I don't think this has anything to do with health reviews. (Like when another restaurant in town closed for cleanup after some cockroach issues)

I think it also coincided with Columbia Gas installing a new gas line. I noticed it as I drove by a few times.

While on the topic of Mancy's, have they always been closed on Sunday? We tried to to go to the steakhouse a few weekends ago and was surprised to see them closed on Sundays.

Yeah- huge reinvestment in the back of the house. Having spent a fair amount of time in that kitchen, among many others, I can vouch for their cleanliness. Didn't see the health report, but I can say that those guys are VERY good restauranteurs, I doubt that would be taken lightly. I would also just like to mention that mancys italian has one of the most dynamic and interesting menus in town. theyre always playing with new combinations. On the steakhouse topic- always been closed on Sundays. The othe restaurants are open on Sundays though.

And on the topic of health inspections, some of the violations really need to be taken with a grain of salt. There are some absolutely legit things, like improper food storage/holding temperatures and things like that, but a leaking sink, cups not stored in proper dispenser, and other dumb non-critical violations that add to their total number of check marks.

Yep, what he said. That business about the wiping cloths have to be stored inside the sanitizer bucket, underwater, and not draped over the side -- that's a very common violation listed in the health reports. And very hard to enforce among everyone in an establishment.

while that's all very true (and the reports CAN be kinda nitpicky) there are good reasons behind all of the violation types. Also, not all of the violations are considered equal- there IS a hierarchy of major / minor and critical etc.

Also, and this is super important: it's absolutely imperative for the management of the restaurant to train everyone in proper food safety. Most restaurants do a pretty great job keeping everyone who walks in the doors safe, but yeah - you're going to sometimes have some misses. Hopefully those are all very minor, but even the minor violations can cause problems for patrons.
