School Superintendent Pay WOW (Medina)

This is likely an extreme example of what's been happening in Ohio. BUT....the pay, BONUSES!!, and not to mention Cadillac benefit packages these administrators are getting have sky rocketed. How does this happen, during recessionary times? They are paid with public dollars....the same public who (generally) have fave wage stagnation (or cuts) and huge benefit cuts. What is going on here? I encourage you to dig into what is being paid to not only your district's Superintendent, but also what the directors are making.

Just like CEOs, there are plenty of people who will work for less - skills, qualifications and experience has nothing to do with outcome.

Remember back in 2002 or so when the TPS was paying itself bonuses? Sure, it was like $2000 per person, but it's really a problem of having unions and political hacks controlling the system while the public sleeps (or is more likely distracted by survival issues). The union thugs and other crooks get while the gettin' is good.

Agreed. I always look for the cheapest lawyer or surgeon. Who cares where they receive their training from. That's why you always see University of Phoenix graduates become federal judges.

http://buckeyeinstitute.org/ is an excellent source for what these people are really being paid. They have been wise enough to mask much of their compensation via benefits. That way they receive even higher total compensation for they don't have to pay taxes for certain benefits & perks.

Along with expensive pensions, add the double-dipping and I really don't understand why people are still voting for school levies.

I think Lakota schools, near Cincinnati, eliminated most or all assistant principals in 2011/12. They either reverted to being classroom teachers or were laid off.

The net has been cast far beyond the superintendent. It's school having multiple assistant principals, layers of administrators, etc. The teachers won't say anything about it for they either fear retribution or someday yearn for a do-nothing, six-figure job of their own before/after they retire.

For Pete's sake, vote down levies and force these thieves to accept pay reductions.

Yeah, really, we don't need qualified individuals to manage a what? $300+ million budget at TPS? Anyone can do that. And all that goes with it - facilities, and personnel and unions and busses and support services and sports and lots more. We can hire anyone to do that.

MrsArcher I think what 6th was saying you don't need 1 superintendent + 35 6 figure salaried assistants doing the same job.

Apparently they could have originally offered $83,000 less (the bonus amount). He's staying...for a mere $240,000 a year total compensation ($1.2 million / 5 years). Color me unsurprised he's staying.

The humorous part of the article is this:

The City of Medina is also facing a 5.9 mill levy residents will vote on come this May. The last levy failed in November and school officials say the district is in need for this one to pass.

They need this one to pass. Good luck with that...

Errrr...the theory behind the short term contracts was that it would incentivize the superintendent be able hold onto their jobs. Why are raises and bonuses necessary? Here's your reward: you get to keep your $135,000/ year job for another year. Do a crappy job...and it hit the bricks, pal. Do an fantastic job? You get to stay or maybe move on to a bigger district that can offer a bigger salary. That's the way it is in private sector. Funnier yet....is when these guys get multi-year deals....then underperform....then the district has to buy out the contract if they have to make a change. What is this? MLB?

Education has become nothing but a giant machine for money. Every time I hear "I want what's best for the kids" I want to punch that person in the face.
