Have an artsy teen in your life? YAAW applications online!

http://www.theartscommission.org/programs/yaaw

I took part in the first two years of YAAW, 20 years ago (yikes!) and it had a MAJOR impact on my life. If you have a teen in your life looking for a summer job, they should consider applying to 2013's YAAW program.

Program Description: The Young Artists At Work (YAAW) program provides young people (ages 14-18) with a paid apprenticeship to learn artistic and professional skills, under the direction of professional artists, art educators or instructors.

Nice to read an endorsement like that! Although they are wildly different programs, the arts and the (new) urban farming/horticulture programs are really life-changers for young people.

Sometimes they've just never seen an adult making money doing something they are passionate about, in some cases they never knew how much they would turn out to love playing in the dirt.

I think one of the valuable aspects of the YAAW is that it removes teens from the pressure-cooker environment of parents and teachers and parents and teachers, getting in trouble, falling behind, doing what you're told, same-o, same-o.

When they get a chance to hear true life career development stories by working artists and horticulturists, it means A LOT at that impressionable age.
