CLOSED
As of 3/17/13 (St. Patrick's Day), a handwritten sign of the front of the door reads "Permanently Closed". No reason given, no thanks for your patronage, etc.
Not the most spectacular food but something different and they always had great happy hour specials. We really treated this place like the "restaurant on the corner" and a great place that you knew what you were going to get when you were beat after a long day at work.
Sorry to see you go Abuelo's! :(
- A Maumee Neighbor"
Can't say I'm going to miss them though always sorry for the folks who lose their jobs.
Went there a couple of times - Meh. Apparently we're not the only ones who haven't been there in years.
I did some work for Abuelo's when they first opened. Mostly placing media buys. They had a good size budget then - but after a while they stopped advertising all together. Now with a Mexican Restaurant on every corner (and on every chat board)...they really seem over priced and out of place for the area.
B.Gumps 101 in Sylvania bit the dust last week too.
are they officially closed? i saw a review on yelp mentioning it, but nothing on their facebook page. I can't believe they closed to quickly. Were they even open a year?
"No reason given ..."
Mar 20, 2013 - Toledo Blade - Mexican restaurant in Maumee closed by Texas-based owners
Melanie Carroll, a spokesman for privately held Food Concepts International LP of Lubbock, Texas, said the Maumee restaurant closed on March 11 as part of an operational decision of the company. The restaurant, she said, had been affected by the economy.

I'm pretty sure they've been there for over 5 years, maybe longer.
I've worked in the Arrowhead area of Maumee for 15 years and only been to the place 3 times. They just a bit more out of the way than I like to for a chain resusturant.
Kan knott spel two dai...
sorry, i was talking about b gumps
Upso, I noticed that one of my twitter/foursquare friends, who had been working there and posting updates about who was playing, is now checking in to the Durty Bird most evenings. Not sure if that's a sign...
We were only at BGumps once, for an after dinner drink. Always meant to get back, but money and time have been in short supply.
Been there a few times, always walked out thinking it's "higher end"-higher priced Mexican-and the dining room was a bit bright inside for my tastes. Same with Don Pablo's.
The locally owned Mexican place on the corner? Darker lighting? Can't keep me outta there. Plus....a few margaritas with dinner....we'll just go to the place on the corner.

that was me on Yelp.
I think they opened late last summer. we really liked the place, going to miss it.
Here's another vote for been there, done that and never returned.
Schadenfreude whenever a chain closes. Does anyone else feel like the market has gotten very competitive in the last few years. Places are either packed or empty, with no in between. Largely, the best places are being rewarded (ditto what holland said).Never went to B.Gumps, but the post on this board about it was the only positive thing I heard. That space is awful too. Takes talent to take an old strip center like that and turn it into an interesting space.
"Its the food, stupid"
True - to a certain extent. IMO, there are numerous Mexican restaurants in the area - some with multiple locations - that serve up barely edible glop along with margaritas that are straight out of a bucket of cheap, commercially made, flourescent green (think National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and the cousin's motor home) ooze with a thimbleful of cheap tequila added. And they all seem to be doing well.
Used to go there, but after Health Department report said they found mouse droppings in the bar area--that was it for me.
absolutely right foodie...
it is too easy to make pseudo "mexican" food... so we get a lot of it with nasty margs
a marg is only 3... 2... 1...
3 ounces tequila, 2 ounces triple sec, 1 ounce fresh lime... or skip the triple sec and lime
Maybe the headline to this thread should have been,"Another one bites the dust in Maumee".
"Used to go there, but after Health Department report said they found mouse droppings in the bar area--that was it for me."
And that's the reason we've never returned to The Oliver House. If you recall, some years back, it was temporarily shut down by the HD due to a massive rodent infestation - throughout the facility. All may be well today but we've just never been able to brings ourselves to try it again.

kud nott spel ysterdey ee-der.
No sympathy here. I went to Abuelo's once and was not impressed with the quality of food or the value. With all of the local competition for Mexican food, I don't know how anyone thought it was a good idea to try a chain here.
Chi-Chi's did well for quite some time - with multiple locations. Though they did it without my $$. Was never impressed with them either. In fairness to Abuelo's, when they came to town, the local Mexican eateries did not yet have 63 locations each. (yes, I know that's an exaggerated # but it sure seems that way sometimes)
Are we talking about Abuelos or BGumps? I am confused.
El Matador, was great in their heyday as far as a Mexican restaurant goes.
"Are we talking about Abuelos or BGumps? I am confused."
Abuelos, BGumps, Oliver House, Chi-Chi's, Most every other Mexican Restaurant in Town to now include El Matador.
Seriously though, talking about Abuelos primarily.
El Matador was good. The Balkin in was better. Same family. Greeks.
"Your tone is quasi-facetious, but you do not realize that Taco Bell was the only restaurant to survive the franchise wars."
"Ssssoooooooo...."
'Sssoooo....now all restaurants are Taco Bell'
"No way!"

Be well, John Spartans of Toledo. It is our destiny.
Well, duh, if I'd clicked on your link, I wouldn't have needed to ask. Sorry. That was a rather fun movie.
I am glad you solved your boggle...
I really didn't expect the place to be open this long.
I look forward to that Demolition Man future for three reasons:
1. MDK (murder-death-kill) is extremely rare.
2. I already know how to use the shells.
3. If all restaurants are Taco Bell, then the single company would know not to open excessive outlets like Abuelo's.
The only problem is that I'd have to pay a fucking (DING!) fine each time I posted to ToledoTalk. :^(
awwwwwwww DAMN IT GZ!!
EXPLAIN THE *(&^$(#*&^$ SHELLS!!!
thenk yaw!
:)
