Bush condems disabled to wheel chair, again. Embryonic stem cell trial prohibited

Bush FDA wing-nut god appointee denies spinal cord INJURY REPAIR trial for the second time, even though the company met all of the bush fda requirements, both times:::
A legacy that history should rightly call mass murder. Keep in mind these are Bush "approved" cells from embryonic stem cells. Cells that have been routinely thrown in the garbage, excess from fertility clinics. No church objected to throwing them away for decades, until, scientists made the claim that they could treat or cure most human diseases. Suddenly the church saw their attendance and bottom line affected, just as they feared surgery, antibiotics, blood transfusions, etc.,, also affecting the bottome line and the power of the church over mankind.

Geron stem-cell test put on hold
COMPANY'S STOCK FALLS NEARLY 20 PERCENT
By Steve Johnson
Mercury News
Article Launched: 05/15/2008 01:34:48 AM PDT

Geron suffered a setback Wednesday when regulators put the brakes to its quest to become the first company to test people with a treatment developed from human embryonic stem cells.

Executives with the Menlo Park biotech company said they received word from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that the agency had placed a so-called clinical hold on their proposed test of the treatment for people with spinal injuries.

After the disclosure, Geron's stock fell 96 cents - nearly 20 percent - to $3.94 at the close of trading.

Geron's chief executive officer, Dr. Thomas Okarma, said in a prepared statement that the company couldn't comment in detail on the development until it receives a letter from the FDA explaining its decision.

But, he added, "we are disappointed with this action given the interactions we had with the FDA" in the past over Geron's plans to conduct the human test.

It's not uncommon for the FDA to impose temporary clinical holds on studies and to later allow the studies to be conducted after its concerns are resolved.

FDA spokeswoman Karen Riley said she couldn't comment on the agency's dealings with Geron. But she noted that the reasons for a hold can range from questions about the qualifications of those planning to do the study to fears that "human subjects are or would be exposed to an unreasonable and significant risk of illness or injury."

Geron spokesman David Schull also wouldn't comment beyond the company's statement.

Use of human embryonic stem cells is highly controversial, largely because they come from discarded embryos. In addition, because human embryonic stem cells can grow into any type of tissue, some scientists fear they might cause tumors or other health problems.

Okarma has insisted that his company's studies using this treatment in animals have turned up no health problems. As part of its request to begin the human study, Geron said it gave the FDA about 21,000 pages of information, much of it data from its animal studies.

Executives at Los Angeles-based Advanced Cell Technology, which has an office in Alameda, have said they also hope to get FDA approval this year to test people with an eye treatment made from human embryonic stem cells. It's unclear how its proposed study might be affected by the FDA's hold on Geron's study.

I dont want my tax money to go for EMBRYONIC stem cell research. Use all the adult stem cells you want, and there IS goverment funding for that.

Sure linecrosser, keep throwing those excess frozen microscopic cells into the garbage every week, and keep working on adult stem cells that will never result in a cell product that is scalable in production and gets hammered by the immune system. At a million bucks a pop and some invasive harvesting of your cells, they could treat the rich.

Fatbabe,
Perhaps you have missed all the bush rhetoric, and the fact that he has twice used all the clout of the U.S. to get the U.N. to pass an international ban on stem cell research.

You can proceed to explain how not comparing and contrasting embryonic stem cells to cancer stem cells isn't important, after you have read about 30 research papers on the topic.

Till then you can just keep on preaching gods judgement against the sick and the dying. So typical of the "faithful" to be uninformed and judgemental, and make villians out of anyone who doesn't agree with their flavor of Kool Aid. "judge not lest ye be judged".

7 years of delay and counting, tell me how it isn't mass murder done in "gods" name. I think he'll be very pissed off about it.

In the time the "faithful" keep us looking for alternate solutions, millions die. Perhaps when they get sick, you could just sacrifice them on an altar. The same point would be made,, while you keep on thrrowing excess cells at fertility clinics, into the garbage can.

Bushy promised the faith nazis that he would not allow an cells into trials as long as he's in office. A 12 step alcoholic, he has to walk the narrow path of the "faith", lest he go back to the bottle and the white powder, so he's easily swayed by the nazi pope, and his fellow nutcases who are betting now that the final battle is in Iran, and that its their job to destroy the world so Jesus can come. This is the rhetoric of his very public zealot-idiot enabling preachers.

Prime,

Your stance seems to involve two extreme assumptions. First, that the only way embryonic stem cell research can happen is if the federal government does it. And, second, if embryonic stem cell research were done, virtually every malady the human race has ever suffered would disappear overnight.

Given the economic return that could be reaped from the latter assumption, how does the former assumption stand given the "evil greed" of private capital?

Seems to me Hitler was the one that started all this master race stuff, wasn't he? And I've read and heard other opinions that the stem cell thing is vastly overrated as well-in other words, it's doubtful it'll be the cureall for everything that it's cracked up to be.

Prime3end= I asked you if you were "stretching it a little". I then pasted a copy of a "real" news article reporting the same event rather than the inflammatory editorial you used. Not to mention the over-the-top headline you used.

For every action, there is an equal (in size) and opposite (in direction) reaction force.

Name calling and blasting people does nothing to gain favor to your side of an issue.

I read that article when it came out, its understated , and they don't attempt to give any depth or consequence toel presidente' jesus-nazi's hindrance of the trial. This is after all the second time FDA has stopped the trial from happening, even though Geron worked hand in hand with FDA to make all those rats walk again. Each time, the decision came from the top to kill the trial, last time before the election, this time just to keep everyone suffering more for jesus I suppose. Remember, life begins when you become sexually excited !!

There's a ton of embryonic stem cell research going on right now (and it's been going on for a number of years) in the United States. It just isn't funded by the federal government. A few states are funding it and many private foundations and businesses are funding it. Unfortunately, embryonic stem cell advances have been few and far between, and from what I understand an indidivual's own stem cells (especially cord blood samples) are looking much more promising. That's not to say embryonic stem cells are hopeless, but currently it appears their cord blood cousins are more promising.

There's also the issue of other countries funneling money into embryonic stem cell research. If advances come of that research then that knowledge will be passed instantly to the United States where we can then use any developments.

Your comment that "Bush condemns disabled to wheel chair" is inaccurate, inflammatory, and (sadly) typical of the "blame everything on Bush" philosophy that has become so rampant in the last 3 years. It's a mindless conclusion that harbors no foundation of truth at all.

HeyHey's correct. I would however point out two things. First: The US used to be the major global innovator in many fields. The lack of government funding for stem cell research does impair some of our best minds from applying themselves to this field. Hence we lose ground as an innovator. Secondly: If embryonic stem research does result in major disease or health advances then I would wager that those who vehemently oppose this type of stem cell research will have no qualms about having themselves or their loved ones benefit from it, which in my view is somewhat hypocritical.

Hey Hey, wrong on the potential of adult stem cells vs embryonic stem cells for creating tissue types without having a thousand genes switched out of state. FDA will never approve such cells, except on a direct order from el presidente'. Perhaps when they figure out what those thousand genes do, you could trust a cell derived from a skin cell, or an cell harvested from a zealot christian.

Your statement on funding is so wrong. Universities who receive federal funding for ANYTHING must build a separate facility for embryonic stem cell research, or risk losing all federal aid for the university. Check your facts. Not a pencil or pen, pad or paper, no shared gas bills, electric bills, NOTHING assoicated with the university can do new research on cells other than the bush cells, which only one company has figured out how to make safe.

Your statement on cord blood is wrong too. Where the hell is your cord blood? Right, how many , even of the latest generation have saved their cord blood. Christ.

Embryonic stem cells are SUPERIOR IN ALL RESPECTS TO ANY ALTERNATIVE THUS FAR STUDIED. not hollering, caps for emphasis.

The Universities finally are building their own facilities independent of the goverments jesus hammer, so yes things are starting.. But don't kid yourself, the only obstacle to having treatments by now has been bush and the jesus pigs who backed the bushhog.

Hypocritical is what judgemental ignorant republicanos do best.

The only thing that is innaccurate and inflammatory, is the christian idiocy that has crossed into state policy, and is stopping the treatments that would heal millions of people.

I don't think anyone should underestimate the power and influence of government funding of any medical research. When the government does nothing, and private industry , even universities self fund a research bit, the price triples.

Prime, why so much hatred twords christians? were you abused by a priest or something? Its ok I think the next president will be from the Democrat party, and they will force government funding for it. Heck they can even raise the taxes so you can help pay for it. Throw it in with national health care. Just remember when you overburden the people with money, they tend to leave the country and take their money with them.

I would imagine people really into stem cell research would go and be welcome overseas to do what they choose. "Our best minds" (whatever that means) might be working in Europe or Asia. More power to them.

"Just remember when you overburden the people with money" - I like the spirited communist propaganda.

Charlatan, this speaker at the Salk Institute hits it right on the head. If you know his name, please post it.

Yes, LOL,, ""Just remember when you overburden th epeople iwth money"" some areas like Sweeden and Denmark would dispute that saying too. Some countries in that area have incredibly high taxes and yet are the happiest people in the world.

Linecrosser, no, I wasn't molested by a priest. However I believe the group they belong to are mass murderers, I thought I made that clear. And those who force their ideas about god's will upon us , pissing it through the holes in the wall between church and state,, are traitors to the constitution, and promoting mass murder and suffering through their mandating ignorance and fear.

The church is all about power and control and money, which makes them perfect homo bedfellows with our republicoin leaders.

The people (corporations or whatever) with money who leave because they don't like the tax rate can leave. OOOOPs Haliburton already relocated to Dubai.
