Toledo Talk

Anatomy of a hit piece

Hatchet Rag: Mayor Mike Bell’s affinity for world travel and inviting overseas investors to Toledo was unmistakable.

Taxpayer: Not nearly as unmistakable as his love for Toledo and forging true relationships with others that would benefit the community.

Hatchet Rag: Taxpayers paid for nearly all the mayor’s travels.

Taxpayer: But not all. And we didn't pay for the gifts given to him by those whom he attracted with his efforts and personal care, attention, and investment.

Hatchet Rag: D. Michael Collins entered the mayor’s office Friday for the first time as mayor and found none of that city property.

Taxpayer: You've just made a huge leap from taxpayer funded travel to taxpayer funded tokens of personal friendship. Many of those whom he fostered "civic" relationships with consider him to be personal friends of their families.

Hatchet Rag: The problem former Mayor Bell may encounter is that the items may not have been his to keep or give away, said Paul Nick, Ohio Ethics Commission executive director

Taxpayer: While we figure that out, let's print a front page article insinuating theft of city property. As far as I am concerned, he can have the momentos of his hard work. Collins doesn't want them, they will only remind him of the "wasted" trips to "foreign" places full of foreigners who should not be trusted or befriended.
___________________________________________________
While the nature of the gifts and whether they were personal or civic is worthy of consideration and remains to be determined, it's pretty clear that Bell took the friendships with him too. He's been in contact with Dashing Pacific multiple times since the election. Dashing Pacific has avoided Mr. Collins' attempts to contact them. They are pretty smart. They know that Collins ran a patently xenophobic campaign. They know that Collins has publicly stated that he intends to summon them to Toledo and give them a disrespectful dressing down, threat and ultimatum for not moving faster to develop property that they own, while they watched the relationships that they built get flushed down the toilet and while they read the Blade's offensive and intrusive hypervetting of themselves, their families and their companies. They know that Collins' has foolishly threatened to attempt to take the property back.

Mr. Bell inhereted the relationships that he built because there simply wasn't anybody left that they felt comfortable dealing with. Because they control the ball, the "foreigners" will likely never invest another dime in the city of Toledo after the way that they, and their friend and colleague Mr. Bell have been treated.

Maybe someone should ask the givers what the intent of the gifts that "FILLED" Mayor Bell's office was, and what their cultural and civic expectations for making the gifts was. Because as of this point, only they and Mr. Bell know.

The article from the Hatchet Rag positioning this as if Mr. Bell snuck into the stockroom at night and sold "city property" to fund a crack habit or something is classic Blade muck.
Like Mr. Collins' xenophobic and racist views, so clearly articulated over time, it is one of the reasons that people won't do business here. (Foreign or domestic.) Our best chance for attracting investment and partners has left the building, ushered out by the unions that he threatened while in office. As far as I am concerned, he can give the swag to sister cities and those who helped build the relationships that will only now become a waste of time.

The true crime here is not a missing blanket that would not have served the taxpayers, but the trashed relationships that we invested in so dearly, and Mr. Bell did a masterful job of fostering.

The Blade's antics once again will cost the taxpayers much much more than the crimes and misdemeanors alleged in this hit piece and the malfeasance insinuated within it.

Perhaps an alternate viewpoint would be that they needed to be placed in museum to commemorate the brief moment in history when Toledo had a chance of survival.

Might be a couple alternatives. Don't make friends with politicos. Don't give gifts to politicos. Round up all the politicos and do what Dennis Rodman's friend, the dictator of North Korea did, strip them naked put them in a cage with 120 dogs who have not been fed for three days and stand right there with your brother watching the entertainment. It has never been in the outlook nor the nature of the people of this area not to be accepting of different cultures, points of view, and backgrounds. We are all descendants from some other place at some other time. Erin Go Bragh.

That wouldn't work here. You could round up all of the politicos, but the unions would just replace them with more union stewards and "business managers."

the alleged "dog story" is just that, alleged. There is no proof and the media is running with it so they can continue their propaganda of the monster in North Korea.

Remember when the U.S. helped Sadam and Iraq with billions of dollars? Then, all of sudden he became a monster?

Funny how certain leaders change depending on whether we need them as allies or not.

The Blade poll asks:

What should be done with gifts received by mayors and paid for by tax payers?

I wonder what that has to do with gifts paid for by private parties, who are citizens of other countries?

Is this gonna be the pattern for the next 4 years? Give it a rest already. It's over. We get it. Everyone was wrong except you. You voted for Bell. He was the greatest mayor ever. Apparently not enough voters thought so, but whatever. Let it go.

What pattern, me posting and you coming along with stupid comments? Probably. You have a lot of time on your hands and an agenda.

LOL.
:)
Well, to be fair, the Blade should have quoted and dated the Dibs. Nonetheless, dibs trumps. I am pretty sure it is above calling shotgun. (I am not implying that he took the ceremonial shotgun.)

Wait a minute...I thought that moment passed in 1984, when they built Portside?
