Social Media Fail - WTOL

For about 10 minutes earlier today, WTOL's Facebook page had this post:

image

I'm sorry, but any sensible person would know that this picture was not taken in Michigan. A simple Google search that took less than a minute proved that this picture was taken a few years ago in Antarctica (I think). Commenters started ripping WTOL apart and the post soon disappeared.

My question is, who runs the FB accounts for local news media? I've seen other stuff on their account that looks like a Jr. High student posted it. I certainly hope it's not the reporters because if they can't spend five minutes researching something this far-fetched, then that says a lot for any investigative journalism that they put on their newscast.

Comments ... #

I was in a heated discussion about a year ago as to weather their responses to comments are considered "editorials" from WTOL. The person posting for WTOL was very opinionated.

No! Imagine that.

Like most TV... I don't know, maybe all TV, they don't have real reporters or journalists. At least, not in the way you and other well-educated people might think of them. What they have are drama queens and talking heads, all of whom are somewhat narcissistic speed talkers. Translate that into the pseudo written word, and if you can reach the junior high school level I'd say you're doing exceptionally well, or like the public school system, you've lowered the bar. Again.

Good observation, by the way.

Most companies leave social media to someone who has no clue what it actually is. The above is not, it's shoddy and inaccurate reporting.

Old media (radio/tv/print) still has little clue what to do with social media. Mainly because they can't control the message like they could in the old "one to many" broadcasting days.

Your audience is listening/watching and they have the tools to tell you that you're doing it wrong. Like posting a picture from Antarctica and passing it off as the Great Lakes.

You got that right. My experience was that the old guard's attitude toward the internet, social media, ipods, satellite radio...emerging competing technologies in general...was like the hear no evil/see no evil/speak no evil monkeys. Or an Ostrich with its head buried. They didn't want to acknowledge them. I had a GM tell me one time "radio is king and always will be! If you don't agree, there's the door, and good riddance to you!" This was in 2002. You know, radio's high-watermark year.

Whatever, I'm having fun.

Sohio, I have a similar story. A supervisor here in Toledo told me "E-mail is overrated. You'll find that the larger companies have all gone back to sending paper memos." This was right around 2002.

and their facebook page is nothing but clickbait. Growing up in the 70's and 80's, it was all Channel 11 in our household. Look up old newscasts from that time. Actual reporting, news, sports.

At least they're trying, Paul. I was in radio for over a decade; one of the most ponderous head-scratchers I dealt with during that time was the week that started off with my boss telling me "the website is really not that important, concentrate on other stuff", and ended with me being yelled at because I had not updated the website that week ("where's the list of the past week's morning show guests? C'mon, Maaan!"). Like I said...Fear and Loathing. I have to wonder if radio is still like that...

Went to WTOL site to see the UT score and article. Nothing. Last story in sports was March 13th.

Very true. However, the public is too dumb to notice that TMZ is also not news. So the less actual journalism, the higher the ratings. I always notice the schmendricks joking it up, instead of giving facts. I have also recently noticed that local news does not give more than 4 stories of local news... and turns to Detroit, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Flint news. etc. Like we really care about a house fire in Bay City, unless we are a relative or friend of the victim!

I still cannot get over Chris Peterson covering WTOL's stream, showing she will be on at 5 PM. I thought she was retired... maybe not then.

Accuracy is a problem here. So is appearances of reporters and anchors. Some wear clothes several sizes too small for their chunky frame (weekend girl), some wear overdone necklaces, some clearly are not prepped, and face looks more made up after commercial breaks. Yes, we do notice it. I'm just the first to say anything.

WTOL really has some issues... but then again all stations in this market do.

I just cannot see why a no-news area, has to have as much news as it does... other than bilking clients of cash. In this case, they really need to have a discount, due to the lack of professionalism, and too few (if any) brand new stories.

it's just you. Its about everyone's appearance... not just what you want it to be.... just so you can be a victim... or make others one.

my friend "junckboxx"... you're an absolute schmuck. it's pretty rare that I see a couple of posts by anyone and think "yep, I can write that person off as irrelevant to the world and likely a disappointment to everyone that ever loved him/her", but you've managed to pull it off.
