OK, where did you stay? we were considering one of the resort inns that put upa groupon but it got less than stellar reviews. we have been there once with a family reunion in a rented house outside of town, would like to go back and explore on our own (and stay out of the tourist traps). :)

Very nice photos, O.K.!

Mrs. Sohio and I have been wanting to go to Gatlinburg for some time. We want to stay here:

Check out the vintage furnishings! Maybe this year we'll make it happen...

Last time I was in that area was 1982, the World's Fair. I still have a token from Fanny Farkles.

We loved our visit! It was a family trip, my Father got us a delux luxury log cabin on the side of a mountain that could sleep 18....we had only 7. The building was 3 stories with a hot tub, full kitchen, and gaming room on the bottom floor with pool table/air hocking/xbox, and more. Every floor had a balcony so you could enjoy the view. The top photo in my post is the view from my bedroom one morning. Every night I slept with the door open to enjoy the mountain air, and song birds in the morning.

We stayed here, and it was worth EVERY penny: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60842-d589604-Reviews-Gatlinburg_Falls_Resort-Gatlinburg_Tennessee.html

We loved the state park as much as the tourist attractions. Going in early May was perfect - no crowds, lovely weather.

Justphillips, we have been going there pretty much every year for the last 20 years, and used to go there as a kid as well. Our teenage son considers it his second home. If you've never been, make sure you stop at the welcome center going into Tenn. There will be tons of brochures for anything/anyplace in that whole area, and they have it grouped by area as well. Many of the brochures have coupons (meals & attractions) in them, some, better offers than others. If anyone in your group is interested in mini-golf, I think they have more mini golf places than any other place I have ever been. And if you play any, make sure you play at the Davy Crockett course just inside of Gatlinburg next to the Fairfield. Every hole has some sort of special feature. If you have kids, take them to The Track in Pigeon Forge. Bumper boats, bungee swing (which is fun just to sit and watch), race cars, arcade, mini amusement park for the little kids. It's free to get in, you only pay for what you go on. There are a lot of restaurants, but not really any "fine dining". The place we go to for our "fine dining" night, is called The Peddler and it is on the road that goes along the river, in Gatlinburg. They have an AMAZING salad bar (I said there's not much fine dining!) and they have a "peddler" bring 2 steak options around on a cart, that they cut for you at your table. If you go, make sure you ask for a seat along the windows overlooking the river and if you like Creme Brulee, their Khalua and Irish Creme are both excellent (they don't always have them). Other places that are on our must do list every time, are Applewood Orchards Farmhouse Restaurant (the FARMHOUSE). It's off of the main drag in Pigeon Forge. It's a small complex that has a wine shop, a store that sells everything apple (decorations, pies, ciders, etc.) ice cream store, and a couple of restaurants. The Farmhouse has a menu that consists of items like fried chicken, meatloaf, pot roast, etc. , and when you get there they serve you with apple julep and little apple fritters which are soo good. Bennet's BBQ is also a good place. We're not big fans of BBQ, but they have a great little breakfast buffet with killer grits and very large fruit bar. At lunchtime they convert it into a salad/soup bar (I guess those are still big down in the South!) which is also very good. If you want pizza, good luck, though they options are getting better. The current fav is Mellow Mushroom which is kind of a psychadelic place (and it's a chain), but they really good. Another good place in Gatlinburg is called The Best LIttle Italian Restauant. It's somewhat hard to find. On the main drag on the left hand side just past all the Ripley's stuff in a little area called The Elks Plaza. We drove past it for years never even seeing it. Get the Garlic Balls. Bread balls COVERED in garlic swimming in butter and olive oil. When you go up into the mountains, if you go to Cades Cove you will almost be guaranteed a wild animal sighting. Mostly deer, but we have seen wild pigs, turkeys and many, many bears. A lot of people say to go in the early am, but we have always had better success in the early evening. Sorry, so long, can you tell I miss the place? We couldn't go last year and this year does not look too promising either... :(

I second the Mellow Mushroom, they have one in Wilmington NC and we go when we visit the kids. Very cool place and very good pizza. :) Man, you guys are making Gatlinburg sound too good for our October camping trip this year!

Nana, we were down in Columbus a month ago and there is a Mellow Mushroom near the Polaris area. We did not eat in, but just took our pizza to go...
