De humidifiers

so on days where the humidity is high, do you use a dehumidifier in your house?

Or if you have A/C do you just let that do the cooling and be done with it?

I only use a dehumidifier in the basement. The air conditioner we have does a good job of removing some humidity from the air as the warmer (and more humid) air passes over the evaporator coils.

Air conditioning serves two purposes, first it dehumidifies the air, then it cools it (so it would be redundant to use both and wasteful).

A dehumidifier would only be effective if you closed up the house, allowing it to have a meaningful impact on the relative humidity. In these cases it would likely become uncomfortably warm, further a dehumidifier generates a fair bit of heat as a byproduct of it's function. Generally these are used only to reduce the humidity in a controlled space which has an excess of humidity such as a laundry room, bathroom or basement.

I don't have A/C
I used the dehumidifier in the basement like Breeman suggests. I got it from Ebay from one of those companies that sells dehumidifiers after they are used during repairs on a/c systems. I had to buy a vent hose thing to attach to it. This way the heated air exits one of the basement windows.

People in our neighborhood use dehumidifiers year-round to prevent mildew in the (ground-floor) bathrooms. When we use the central air, the indoor humidity is reduced significantly.

We have A/C but run a dehumidifier year round in the basement. We have a sub floor and carpeting and nice furniture in the basement (Family Room).

Thanks guys. You've helped me decide I don't need one. I grew up without ac, and we always used the dehumidifier, but now I have central air. We don't have mildew or anything like that, and no basement, so I don't think I'll get one.

Thx again.
