City of Toledo - Special Assessments

I received this happy piece of news in the mail the other day. Apparently the brain dead idiots elected clowns City Council passed an ordinance (577-13) last December with regard to "special assessments" that get applied to the property tax bill. This is apparently an annual Council ordinance.

I assume that this is the "Specials" figure that one can see on the AREIS tax summary.

My special letter, however, is to inform me that my "special assessments" are going to be over $250. I called the name listed on the letter, but (naturally) no one is available to take my call.

Anyone else receive one of these? In the past my "special assessments" have been $150 or so, and I am curious how much of a financial spanking I am going to get.

Here is the letter:

I haven't received a letter, but looking at AREIS, the amount on my Net Specials line is $120.36. Is that the entry you're talking about?

Is there something special going on in your area like streetlamp updating or something that would account for the significantly higher fee?

Yes, that is what I think the "special assessments" falls under, gamegrrl.

As far as anything "special" - the only "special" services we received in the past year was extra trips by the snow plow. We have no sidewalks, no new lights, and no storm sewers in the area. They have not run the street sweeper in several years, and we are waaaay overdue for a visit by the stone-and-pitch crew (our neighborhood has an older form of paved road).

Heck - they haven't even cut the grass at the one house I have complained several times about (it is a half-mile away, or I would cut it myself).

If we are getting the "special" assessment because of snow-plowing, I will be pissed, since I went out and cleared the street and the corners myself many times when the city was slow to do so (not to mention clearing between four and six neighbor driveways when I was hyper-caffeinated).

I just did a aries search and copied what they had on specials for a random location.

1-88-WMD L.C. WASTE MANAGEMENT DISTRICT
2-00-0000 T.A.S.D.-MOSQUITO
9-30-1 STREET SERVICES 1-TOLEDO
9-31-064A LIGHTS GEN.-TOLEDO
9-37-0000 TREE MAINTENANCE-TOLEDO

It looks there is more than streets being charged in there.

Also I am sure there are items charged in other areas based on location.

Ah, thanks MIJeff! I never noticed that you can click for a detailed breakdown of special assessments by category.

It looks like my total taxes are going up about $125, almost all of which was for snow removal. How special.

Lucky me: I have a double lot on a corner, gamegrrl. I am so "special" that way.

I already knew you were extra-special. And now we have billable proof ;-)

Corner lots are special, wait till they assess sewer or water line replacement costs, or curb or sidewalk repairs.

I looked mine up. What is this charge for "Gaslighting?"

Do you have any street lights in the area that run on natural gas? I tried a google search but the term "gaslighting" refers to a spouse telling lies to the other one to make them feel guilty????? Then there was references to tur of the century firestations using gas lighting. The only thing I can think of is they have some sort of decorative streetlights in your area that run on gas, Levis Commons??? Give your general street and block say 5300, 5400. I am pretty sure its not citywide and would like to see what the heck that is.

Are we being double charged for garbage? Or is 1-88-WMD L.C. WASTE MANAGEMENT DISTRICT for the landfill and the charge on the water bill is for pick up only?

Don't we already pay for snow and ice removal?

I'm new here and want to jump in to let people know if you're disabled, even if you're not 65 years old, you're eligible for the Homestead exemption. My husband is disabled and we found out quite by accident and overpaid for a year. It will cut property taxes, water/sewer and trash charges. Here is the link:

I still am wondering what the gaslighting charge is all about, does anyone know if they still use any natural gas lighting in the city or county?

It was a joke referencing the cultural adaptation of the 1938 play Gas Light and the 1944 movie Gaslight, starring Ingrid Bergman.

"Gaslighting" while it sounds like something that you'd see on a tax bill, is also a modern colloquial term describing mental manipulation in which false information is fed to a victim to make them doubt their own memory and sanity.
Psychologists have associated gaslighting with sociopaths.

Also referenced in the Steely Dan song "Gaslighting Abbie" from the 2000 album "Two Against Nature."

Thanks to the 2-3 people who got the joke. :)

Aww , c'mon. I bet more than 2 or 3 people got the joke. I got it, but it was even more funny to keep quiet and see where it went from there.
