Petoskey Gaylord Getaway, need advice

I'm cross-eyed from looking at hotel websites. Some of the customer reviews are so demoralizing! I'd like to visit Petoskey, MI this fall, go elk watching in Gaylord for part of the time. Interested in scenic drives, lake views, looking at rocks, eating where the locals do ... any advice appreciated, especially for lodging. Thanks.

Railside Bar & Grill in Elmira(near Gaylord) great food & service. Also, plenty of Polish food on the menu. 4 1/2 stars on yelp. I go there every year on trip up north.

Anything Petosky, Harbor Springs says Stafford is topnotch. Perry Hotel in Petosky is topshelf with a terrific view of the bay. Happy motoring. Great area year around.

We stayed twice at the Perry Hotel. The rooms both times were nothing to write home about. Mattresses were old, etc. But the hotel itself is awesome. And downtown Petosky is pretty cool.

A short drive south of Petosky to Charliviox is Staffords Weathervane bar restaurant @ the drawbridge we give it a 10. Then a nice scenic drive from there up the north side of lake Charliviox to the Horton Bay general store which amazing.
