No big deal for the end viewer. A small, unobtrusive OTA indoor antenna will solve this problem. Let Raycom and DirecTV battle all they want.

This isn't going to get any better folks. The greed from all parties involved will not end and We, The People are going to continue to get stuck with it.

I can get all local channels OTA, except channel 11, which really blows when I have time to watch Jeopardy.

I'm wondering if WTOL increased their over-the-air signal strength once DirecTV dumped them. I have been using a Mohu Leaf antenna the last month or so and no matter where I placed it, I could not get WTOL. Consistently. Turned on the TV yesterday morning and there it was, clear as a bell. Hmmmm...

I've got the el cheapo rabbit ears antenna I got from Buckeye when they were having their pi$$ing match with WNWO parked out of sight behind my TV which sits in the den - a brick walled room. I get everything but WGTE crystal clear. WGTE won't come in at all.

Part of the reason I switched to directv a couple years ago was when Buckeye stopped carrying 36 for a while.

The change pisses me off because the new season is starting soon and there are a couple shows I like on CBS and also prefer 11 for news and like watching Letterman. I know I can get an attena but doesn't do me any good if I want to DVR shows.

I called Direct for a credit and I hate to give the Block's any compliments, but their customer service is top notch compared to Direct. I was on hold for 28 minutes and still no human so I just sent an email asking for a credit.

If a channel is demanding a cable company or sat. service not carry their signal then the provider should be able to carry an affiliate from Detroit or Cleveland instead.

I'm hoping shows like the Good Wife and Reckless will be available with on demand

Carrying an affiliate from another city would require a change of law or FCC regulation. For this to happen we need Congressman Latta to use his position as Vice Chairman of the Communications Sub-Committee of the Energy and Commerce Committee in the House of Representatives. This is the third major outage in less than 2 years and will most likely not be the last. Whether you watch network TV OTA or not - cable, DTV & satellite bills will go up after each contract negotiation.

Look into the AM-21 OTA receiver. It connects to your DirecTV receiver with a USB cable. This allows the OTA channels to appear in your DirecTV guide. It will also connect to a DirecTV DVR so you can use the DVR to record OTA channels. You will also need an OTA antenna.
I have DirecTV and have an older package that does not include the local channels, so I do not get my locals thru the dish. I have an AM-21 connected to each DirecTV receiver in my house (I have 2 regular receivers and one DVR) and they work great. I still get WTOL and can record the station on my DVR. I am immune to this fight.

They cost $60 if you get one from solid signal up in Novi, MI

DirecTV also sells them on their website.
Maybe you could talk to them and inquire about getting one for free since they are having the feud with WTOL.

Thanks for the info on the AM-21 Cujo. I appreciate it a lot. Amazon has them on their site for a little less and free shipping for prime members:

http://www.amazon.com/DIRECTV-AM21N-TV-Tuner/dp/B006DQ0QG8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1409762024&sr=8-1&keywords=am-21

If I can get ever get a human at Directv, I am going to ask them to give me one or least loan me one for free and give me a postage paid return label to mail it back once the feud with 11 is over. I don't think I should have to pay $60 for channel 11. My contact is over soon with Direct so I am hoping I can use that to negotiate.

Other than when I have a customer service issue (Buckeye was great about answering phones and with customer service and if I had an equipment problem I could just swap it out by my house the same day instead of waiting two days to get the equipment), I have been happy with directv. But in situations like this it is frustrating to on hold that long and then sending an email and getting a canned response.

I sent a message to directv last night after hanging up from being on hold for so long asking for a credit and this was the response I received. They mention you will be able to see NFL action, wonder how that will happen when CBS is carrying the NFL games.

Some local channel owners are denying DIRECTV customers and some of its own most loyal viewers access to its local broadcast stations unless they pay more than double just to receive the same broadcast shows that remain available over the air for free. We will always work to protect our customers and prevent them from enduring any unnecessary interruptions, no matter how brief. We appreciate their patience since it has a direct impact on their bill. Despite these unnecessary blackouts, NFL and college football fans can see all of the first few week’s action uninterrupted, and the majority of ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC series won’t premiere for several more weeks.

Please visit DIRECTVPromise.com for the latest information. We hope to resolve the dispute soon.

@jamesteroh:

"Other than when I have a customer service issue (Buckeye was great about answering phones and with customer service and if I had an equipment problem I could just swap it out by my house the same day instead of waiting two days to get the equipment),"

And that's the primary reason I stay with Buckeye - not to mention I very much enjoy my high speed Internet. As I have stated numerous times here in other threads, IMHO, Buckeye's service is second to none. You can reach a human 24/7/365 and typically get your issue resolved.

For those of you who are also Buckeye customers, here's something you may want to check out: while attending the Crosby Festival this year, I struck up a chat with the Buckeye rep on hand at their trailer. We talked content, service and price. My only issue was with the latter. He said if I was willing to make a two year commitment, he could do something about the price. I gave him my contact info and he did get back to me a couple of weeks later. We exchanged the necessary info, he punched in the discount codes and my new monthly rate is about $42 less than I was paying previously. We have the VIP package with the Media Gateway Server connected to 4 TV's. We have all of the HD content offered but we do not have any of the premium services such as HBO, Showtime, etc. I offer this for comparison purpose as your discount may vary.

In two years, who knows what the technology and streaming options may be. But I knew we were definitely not going back to either of the satellite providers and, after years of dealing with AT&T in the business world, I wouldn't even consider them as an option. Furthermore, most of what we enjoy is not available for streaming (for free anyway) so the two year commitment made sense for us.

YMMV.

I was interested to see that someone else has difficulty getting Channel 11 OTA. I have the equivalent of the the Leaf and pulling in Channel 11 is, at best, sporadic. Since originally finding the best spot for the antenna by trial and error (and loads of frustration), it has basically stayed in the same spot. However, some times I can get 11 clear as a bell and sometimes I get absolutely no signal. This change can happen as I'm sitting there watching it. Sometimes, a new channel scan helps and sometimes it has absolutely no effect. Does anyone know how to find out how their signal strength compares to other local channels? I only have a few favorite broadcast programs but, sadly, most of those are on CBS.

Has anyone that has left Buckeye for another provider been able to get promo pricing from Buckeye when their contract is up and they try switching back? I see Buckeye is always offering some good promos for new customers, but not sure if they will give me the pricing or not since I use to have cable with Buckeye and still use them for my internet.

Also wondering if they will remove the existing dish if I switch back.

Even though Buckeye doesn't have two of the channels I like (was another one of the reasons, I switched), I'd be willing to consider going back to Buckeye for the right price and if they would remove the dish (it's on a second floor and it's a condo, so I have no desire to remove it myself).
