Toledo Talk Shoot - November 2015

During a recent social gathering several of the men at the table proposed we get together for an unofficial Toledo Talk shoot. So here it is:

Time: Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 10:00 AM

Place: Shooters of Maumee
507 West Sophia Street; Maumee, OH 43537
(419) 893-4867

You can read about the venue in Range Report: Shooters of Maumee.

If you don't have a firearm, don't worry. You can either borrow a pistol or three from me or one of the other ToledoTalk users, or you can rent one if you see something under the glass you'd like to shoot.

With the possible exception of Solleks, none of us are Olympic class marksmen. These days I get a warm fuzzy feeling when everything lands on the paper, and given the average age (and mileage) of the other shooters, I expect they feel the same way. Don't pass up this opportunity to put some lead in the air just because a few grains will be outside the ten ring.

If you're a brand new shooter, never really shot much or even held a real live firearm before, say so. We'll help you out.

I plan to spend an hour at the range, then repair to a friendly bistro close by for small talk and sustenance. As to which establishment I patronized, I'm open to suggestions. I don't know the area all that well, you see. Everyone who shoots or shows up is welcome to join me.

If you think you'll show up, RSVP this thread.

See you there!

Trilby plans to attend. This time I'll put the muffs on before entering in order to reduce the possibility of a splitting headache in case someone is there with a cannon like last time.

Afterwards preference: any place with either breakfast or french fries.

One of these days I'll get you guys to go to Cleland's to shoot, but until then I will plan on joining you on the 21st.

Is this one of those shoots where we're just all together shooting at regular targets, or does someone put together some 'fun' or themed targets and we have a bit of fun competition?

We can play the Visine game; put a bright red or orange sticky in the center of the target, run it back to 25 feet and get the red out.

I could also print out some balloon targets - 20 balloons per page - and see how many can be broken in 20 shots.

Entry fee $1.00, winner take all. Any interest?

And while I'm at it, how about SensorG, HistoryMike and JR. All three of you are shooters. Come out an throw some lead with us!

Wish I could go, but I'll be in Chicago. with all the shooting going on there it'll kind of be like being there.

Tap the brakes on that marksman talk. I'd like to think I'm pretty decent at combat shooting, but the marksman stuff has never been my thing. I did compete in a poor mans biathlon once, slogging away on a Nordic track and doing push-ups to simulate stress...as expected, my scores plummeted.
I've got it down on the calendar and I'll start lobbying my better half for some free time.

Could recommend some poster profiles from city govn and the local media but better not to do that. Dale's has good cheeseburgers as a post mortem.

I was thinking about Swig Restaurant
http://swigrestaurant.com/
219 Louisiana Ave, Perrysburg, OH 43551

I've never been there. Where is Dale's and is it any better?

posted by madjack on Nov 14, 2015 at 11:46:24 am     #

Dale's is in downtown Maumee, and I like their hamburgers very, very much. Not about size, but taste. Can't explain it. Good food. Cozy small town feel.

I don't think Swig has much atmosphere, but that's just me.

I think i will be able to make it, i will be bringing my 1911 and maybe my single shot 41 mag, 44mag revolver and or glock20 in 10mm if anyone is interested is shooting any of them.

Would subscribe to Swig's as well. Good selection of brewski's, first cabin onion rings, and get the Cleveland dog ignoring the name. Outdoor patio heated if anyone brings a stogie. Prices are in line.

44mag revolver

Nobody will notice.
I'm going to bring a Mosin M44 and hundreds of 1970s era 7.62×54R. If you have a pacemaker, you should probably limit your time.

(Just kidding. Have to work Saturday I think.)

There's a reason I like Cleland's better but I'll double-up my hearing protection for the morning.

And no Visine games - I'm bringing my .22LR and am not wasting that much ammo. I'll round up some novelty targets if any one wants to play.

Do it. I'm up for an impromptu tourney.

I'm thinking Swigs is the place to go after the smoke clears.

Does anyone have a shooting chronograph that they would be willing to bring to the shoot and allow me to use for a while? I have some ammo that I need to test.

posted by madjack on Nov 18, 2015 at 04:23:20 pm     #

do they allow chronograph use? it would have to be set 10-15 feet in front of the firing line, unless someone has a magnetospeed or lab radar chronograph.

How do we acknowledge each other, name badges, secret handshake, flower on our lapel, bandana headband? The only people I'd recognize are Madjack, Mariner & SensorG.

You'd recognize SensorG? In public?! Well... I'm surprised, that's all.

I'll send them some email and tell them we're coming. When we rent a lane, we'll ask them to watch for other TT users.

I have reason to celebrate a little. Check this post: Free Beer!

Some of us, we just live right.

Winchester's Train and Defend ammo - interesting concept but I don't think it took off very well, commercially. But free is free.

Enjoyed meeting everyone and lunch was a good time too. Thks for putting it together Deadeye. He did take the marbles even though i can't hit the side of a barn all good marksmen. Jim you have an IOU and i refuse to go to my eternal reward with any regrets. Available when anyone else is noting the holidays get hectic for all of us. Paul's spot on, just like his shooting, all fine people.

Sorry you couldn't be there.

Thanks for the offer. I'd like to run a small amount through your chrono, but there's no hurry. Shoot me an email next time you're headed for your gun club and I'll meet you there, time permitting.

My thanks to Trilby, MrsArcher, PaulHem, Mariner, JimAvolt and Solleks (and his police dog Ripper) for coming. I think everyone enjoyed themselves - I know I certainly did.

And, while I'm at it, I like to thank the friendly, helpful people at Shooters of Maumee. I emailed them the day before our shoot and told them who we were, then explained that we, as a group, might not know each other. I asked that if they came across anyone from ToledoTalk, that they point the person in the right direction.

Not only did they identify all of us, but they reserved two lanes for us without my asking. That's pretty nice of them, and I appreciate their efforts.

I enjoyed meeting everyone that came. Next time I'll bring more loaded mags so I don't spend so much time re-loading.

The headgear with the electronics worked great. Could hear everyone and still not get a headache from the bangs. Also the french fries were terrific. They make them like Penn Station & 5 Guys.

yes they still have pagers, coverage is really getting spotty as the number of subscribers and revenue goes down.

Bringing back an old topic, as I didn't find a more recent entry. Was this a 'one time' event or are there other impromptu gatherings?

I frequent Shooters in Maumee, and recently tried out the new range on the east side (Towers?).

I usually have my Glock, but recently got a new .22 for a range toy.

There is a brand new place on Woodville Rd called Tower Armory. State of the art range and gun store. I haven't been there, but I've heard it's pretty nice.

Nothing against the existing ranges, but this was needed. Not enough capacity for demand. Looks good in the pics. Would be interesting to see how busy. For a while, the wait at Shooters of Maumee became prohibitive. The pics of Towers look good. I like the 130' indoor lanes.

Tell us about Towers. Please.

Towers was nice. A small LED touchpad on the wall sets your target to the exact distance you want to shoot. There are also built-in programs that turn the targets at different times and intervals.

I went on a Monday morning, I was the only one shooting. They charge $20 for the first hour and extra after that (but the time limit was not enforced, probably because it was not busy).

Appears to be a nice selection of rental guns, but I used mine, so no comment on pricing for rentals.

I prefer Shooters, as it's a lot closer to home.

Also, I did become a member at Adams Conservation Club this week. My new member orientation was this past Wednesday. If anyone is a member, what have been your pros/cons?

I wanted a place to shoot outside, and Adams is literally 5 minutes from my house.

I am also a member at Adams, I love the facilities but wish they had a decent indoor range. I think the dues are pretty high but i am going to try to find time to put in some work hours to reduce the bill. I am also a member of Southern Michigan Sportsman's club, their indoor range/clubhouse burnt down last year and the planning of the replacement seems to be a mess.

Haven't been to Adams in a long time, since before Ike died. It was a bit too 'old boys club' for me. Hope its doing well. I know they have a very active youth archery (JOAD) program.
