Jay Leno wrote this; it's the Jay Leno we don't often see....
As most of you know I am not a President Bush fan, nor have I ever been, but this is not about Bush, it is about us, as Americans, and it seems to hit the mark.
'The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some Poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right?
The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the President.
In essence 2/3 of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change. So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking,'What are we so unhappy about?''
A. Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours a day, 7 Days a week?
B. Is our unhappiness the result of having air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter?
C. Could it be that 95.4 percent of these unhappy folks have a job?
D. Maybe it is the ability to walk into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur has seen in the last year?
E. Maybe it is the ability to drive our cars and trucks from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification papers as we move through each state?
F. Or possibly the hundreds of clean and safe motels we would find along the way that can provide temporary shelter?
G. I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the world is just not good enough either.
H. Or could it be that when we wreck our car, emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a helicopter to take you to the hospital.
I. Perhaps you are one of the 70 percent of Americans who own a home.
J. You may be upset with knowing that in the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames, thus saving you, your family, and your belongings.
K. Or if, while at home watching one of your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes, an officer equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your family against attack or loss.
L. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the residents. Neighborhoods where 90% of teenagers own cell phones and computers.
M. How about the complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy of everyone in the world?
Maybe that is what has 67% of you folks unhappy.
Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S., yet has a great disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have, and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live here.
I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from terrorist attacks? The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending you and me?
Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and be glad? Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually caused you personal pain OR is it because the 'Media' told you he was failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day. Make no mistake about it.
The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in this country. They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end up with either a ''general'' discharge, an 'other than honorable'' discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few days in the brig.
So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of 69 percent of Americans?
Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit corporations. They offer what sells, and when criticized, try to defend their actions by 'justifying' them in one way or another. Just ask why they tried to allow a murderer like OJ. Simpson to write a book about how he didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this way......Insane!
Turn off the TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as country. There is exponentially more good than bad. We are among the most blessed people on Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and appreciative.''With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides, flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks,'Are we sure this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?'
Jay Leno wants us to Turn off the TV?
It really doesn't matter who wrote it, though. The poll data concerns the direction the country is heading, not comparing what we have presently to third-world countries.
Snopes is pretty accurate, used it for a long time. The internet was black and white only when I first started using it. This piece o crap email has been around for ages though. Its the neocons , always trying to justify the eradication of liberty.
Youre the one being un American, you call U-Haul!!
Problem is youre too lazy to look for the truth. Keep paying bush and cheney a premium for your gas, while they keep those pesky electric cars at bay and boink every right you think you have. Dissent is the highest form of patriotism, so those that don't protect the constitution, are cowardly wussy lazy traitors. Or one could assume via logical analysis. However NASCAR probably doesn't teach that.
Perhaps you should read the Declaration of Independence, and the Constitution and Bill of Rights.
Oh, and by the way, the reason they always present it in classrooms in old style longhand is so you have difficulty reading it. Heaven forbid that anyone would take it seriously. It was distributed by an insurance company to the nations schools and wasn't in the textbooks in normal print.
So wahhhhhhh yourself fascist neocons, your days of awakening are a comin in the form of a world you won't want to live in, and it won't be as pretty as the one in the fake Leno emials.
120 nations set to go to war over water due to climate change, and you say Wahhhhhh? Overly acidic oceans from carbon dixoide decimating the worlds fish populations and you say Wahhhhhhhhh? God your smart!!!,, If only I had thought of that solution!!!!!!!!!!!! Here ya go neo,, Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! Thats what your children and grandchildren will be screaming because your kind wrecked the planet and failed to strike when the iron was hot.
And i guess typing alot on an internet website it going to change the world?
Liberals, we should send them all to an island of their own to duke out their enviromentalist agenda. I will tell you again, GET OVER IT!
Liberals, we should send them all to an island of their own to duke out their enviromentalist agenda.
Liberals like T. Boone Pickens? Get your head out of the sand!
Liberals or conservatives, democrats or republicans, blah blah blah...
Just because a person posts on a blog site does not mean they are not also engaged in other areas. And, do not bother trying to limit bloggers to liberals. There are as many, if not more, right wing or republican do-nothings as there are lefties.
I concur with prime that trying to quash the expression of dissent is far more unamerican than the dissension. On the other hand, the letter that spurred this thread is correct - Americans ARE whiny, spoiled children much of the time. The truth is almost always somewhere in the muddy middle. I find it hard to believe that anyone is stupid enough to believe that either major party has ALL the right answers. Those would be the people that PT Barnum was referring to in his famous quote.
I think the stats are fairly accurate, based on what I've heard people say, read, etc. But with me, it's not so much 'discontent' as it is 'disqusted' at how the country is doing. I am one who thinks this country's best days are long gone - ruined by the nanny mindset. This country's gone downhill in many ways since the early 90's. More kids than ever before are on medication - easier to blame bad behavior on something 'medical' than to consider it could be lousy parenting & bratty kids. I find it hard to believe that there are so many more kids with add, adhd, depression, bi-polar disorder than other generations - just more lazy parenting & over medicating. There are more out of control kids now than ever - school drop outs, school shootings & violence, more 'super-nanny' tv shows (I never saw kids behave that way 10 yrs ago, but see it often now in stores, etc.) Crazy high teen STD & pregnancy rate, and yet, this generation is more educated about sex ed. & had more free access to birth control than ever before in history. When I was in school (class of '70), the worst offenses in high school were note passing & chewing gum. I got 3 hard whacks with a wooden paddle by the girls' dean (bend over the desk in a skirt) for my second offense passing notes in study haol. If a kid got in trouble in school back then, there was more hell to pay when the kid got home - from the parents, who presented a united front with the teachers. Nowadays, the teachers have no power - there are sue happy parents who will raise hell if a teacher suggests that her angel did something wrong, or find ways to turn it into a civil rights event.
I am sick of the govt. & state infringing on the rights of private business owners, to allow legal acts in their PRIVATE place of business (where the public is invited, but is not required to enter). The smoking bans that have consumed this country & the world - bans passed on faulty propaganda (I dont want to discuss this - it's been beaten to death, and all those 'studies' were proven false & cherry picked in courts). Now the country's on the move to do the same with alcohol & trans fat - what you can eat, what you cannot - for our own good. It is not the govt.s job to tell what to do for "our own good". And yet, many businesses have fired employees for smoking on their own private time, at home - supposedly to save on insurance premiums, which is another lie, because fat people cost far more for insurance companies than smokers do. Where's the civil rights sign wavers for this?
I am disqusted that China seems to own more & more of our country - that so many products imported from China are poisoning people. I am disqusted our country is even doing business with China - who's got one of the worst dictators in the world. Why not lift the embargo off of Cuba & put it on China instead?
I am saddened by how far this country has fallen on so many levels - and I think it's too far gone to ever get it back again. This country doesn't even resemble the country I grew up in, or that my parents grew up in.
I am sickened by how the prices of everything has risen so much in such a short time - and I doubt the prices will ever fall again to where they were two years ago. Does anybody really believe that gas will ever be less than $3.80 a gallon again? Even if the price of a barrel of oil went down, they wont lower the price of a gallon of gas.
One factor in our country's ruin, is how top execs & CEO's are being paid insane multi million dollar salaries & bonuses, and yet those same companies cry they aren't seeing profits & lay people off, freeze salaries, sometimes so bad the company files bankrupsy & goes out of business - but those top execs & CEO's keep collecting those million dollar checks.
I am sick to death of how politically correct this country's become - to the point of absurdity. I am weary of how every comment gets turned into a civil rights or racial thing - when they were not. I'm disqusted that our country has more people in prisons than any other industrialized country in the world. I am disqusted how illegals are taking over this country - there are more illegals in Texas & Florida (to name a couple) than legal citizens. There is a hospital near Dallas, Tx. that is the most baby producing hospital in the country - and 50 percent born are illegal Mexicans, for free, on our tax dollars.
I am disqusted that they pass smoking bans, and yet they make fortunes of tobacco - taxes used to fund SCHIPS that is supposed to help children who have no health insurance. And yet, in some states, a family of four can earn $70,000 a year & benefit from SCHIPS, and 50 percent (at least) of the recipients of SCHIPS in Texas, are to illegal Mexicans. It is morally wrong to tax a minority that benefits others.
I am disqusted that this country is basically owned by Big Pharma, banking & insurance companies. Every 'ill' they say we need to be cured of - smoking, being overweight, alcoholism - there are drugs that Big Pharma is getting wealthy from - along with the politicians & judges who sit on the boards or who own stock.
I am disqusted & saddened about the condition of this country - our forefathers would be turning in their graves by so much interference in our lives by govt, by how much our Constitution has been twisted & perverted. And sadly, I don't see any 'fixes' in our future - I only see more of the same, blind acceptance by lemmings who swallow whatever propaganda some agency spits out.
jenniegirlmarie says 'get over it'. No, I will not get over it - to 'get over it' is to accept wrongs that should never have happened in the first place - to 'get over it' is to spit in the faces of the hard work our forefathers did to create what used to be the best country in the world. Our country used to be the best - it's not anymore. Our country rates low on the world's list in health care, education, etc. Our country's answer to our education problem (over 50 percent drop out rates) is to throw more money at the schools. Many countries in the world far surpass us in education - their kids are passing our kids by in math & science - and they are doing it in lesser schools, with far less money, and more crowded classrooms. What is different with the education problem now than was 20 yrs ago? Bad parenting, and the loss of control the teachers & schools had.
What is different now with the illegal immigrant problem than was 50 yrs ago? (other than there are far more of them now). Presidents Hoover & Eisenhower were concerned about available jobs for men returning from war, and deported every illegal in the country. Eisenhower did it in two years. What's different now? Political correctness. We have presidential candiates that have stated concerns about getting more rights for illegals so they can more enjoy this country. Obama wanted to give them driver's licenses. Many illegals never learn the language & don't intend to learn it. Immigrants who came to this country generations ago sometimes didn't know the language - but they made sure their children learned it, and they became citizens the legal way. Today there are masses of illegals who collect welfare checks that they send home to their families in Mexico. Your tax dollars at work. Our dollar is worth less than the Canadian dollar - not long ago, the US dollar was always worth more.
Get over it? I will not.
