Toledo Now Paying People NOT to Shoot Eachother

http://www.13abc.com/home/headlines/Mayor-Paula-Hicks-Hudson-encourages-communities-after-Monday-shooting-379086211.html

Good to see we have so much free cash in our local government that we can afford to pay felons not to kill each other.

Toledo residents should get paid for not shooting the mayor and city council members.

Toledo is NOT paying.
"Mayor Hicks Hudson said that she wants to bring Operation Peacemaker to Lucas County."
She WANTS to bring this to Lucas County. She also wanted voters to pass a new tax.

From the 13abc May 11, 2016 story posted above:

Mayor Hicks Hudson said that she wants to bring Operation Peacemaker to Lucas County.

The Blade editorial board, the county commissioners, and the sheriff were interested in this idea last year.

July 2015 - Toledo Talk - Operation Peacemaker - (27 comments)

That thread referenced a July 2015 Blade editorial blog post :

Toledo and Lucas County can do something bold to reduce gun violence in their neighborhoods if politicians straighten their spines and do what's right, not what's politically expedient.

County commissioners and Sheriff John Tharp have invited the head of a controversial but effective anti-violence program in Richmond, Calif., to speak to Toledo's leaders, including Police Chief George Kral and Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson.

Sheriff Tharp told Lucas County commissioners about Operation Peacemaker last week, after reading about it in the New York Times.

Common Pleas Court Judge Dean Mandros brought the article to the sheriff's attention.

Commissioners Pete Gerken and Tina Skeldon Wozniak told The Blade's editorial page that the strategy deserves a serious look in Toledo.

If this is mayor PHH's plan...then this city has broken down to no return under her governance. This can not be improved on. Toledo needs stronger leadership.

PHH wants to raise our taxes and doesn't have the money to fix the roads but wants to waste money to pay people (who probably aren't paying taxes and receiving all kinds of taxpayer handouts anyway) to obey the law????

I've been working since I have been 15 and have never been in trouble with the law outside of a couple traffic tickets. Where is my money for not shooting anyone???

Appears the program last for nine months. If a thug goes nine months without shooting anyone and then shoots someone a year later do they have to pay it back?

Are the participants prohibited from owning a gun or receiving other government assistance? Is this money taxable and considered income for programs like Section 8 and foodstamps?

It's going into somebody else's pocket. Because people who live honorably and by the rules of civilization are suckers.

Because after years of "help" (federal, state, and local) the people "helped" are more helpless than ever before.

Because despite 50+% of property taxes going to "education" we graduate morons who can't tell you one goddamn thing about the Constitution, but will bray like jackasses about their "rights."

Because if you say "hey, what a stupid idea", they guilt trip that you are "racist" or uncharitable/un-Christian.

Because if you say the roads should be fixed instead of payouts for criminals you are just too dumb to understand the grand vision of righteousness of this plan.

Living right is not rewarded here. People say to stay. I'm tired. The leeches try (and succeed) to vote themselves more money out of my pocket. And I'm constantly told by schools, by Council, by Mayor that it's not enough. The hell with Toledo...and this program may be the last straw for me if enacted.

Mayor Paula Hicks Hudson encourages communities after Monday shooting

Operation Peacemaker is a fellowship program that pays individuals not to pull the trigger. For six months if criminals stay out of trouble, attend meetings and listen to mentors then they can earn $1,000 a month for nine months. This is a program going on in California and Toledo's mayor thinks it will be successful in Toledo.

I think this makes PH2 even stupider than Carty Finkbeiner. I still hear remarks about Toledo and the crazy mayor.

If PH2 will pay me $10, I promise not to shoot HistoryMike this week. And what the heck, I'll throw in next week as well. Just put the cash in an envelope with my name on it, and drop it off at Bar 145.

Let's play a little game I like to call "being pragmatic" -

Suppose (just for a second) that this program has been shown to work and save cities money in both the immediate future as well as the long run AND make the residents safer.

Would you support it then?

i don't support the logic that all strategies work uniformly across the nation. We've learned this before. It's called the Providence Rhode Island San Antonio Riverwalk theorem.

This ain't Oakland and this ain't California. It goes too hard against corn fed. We work for our hard fought gains. Earned --- never given.

Even the thugs are harder here.

It won't work... If you assume a 30 day month, one needs to be compensated for every hour (30 × 24 = 720).

So $1000 for 720 hours work = $1.38/hr.

What self respecting thug wants to work for only $1.38/hr.

One solution may be to bring in some seasonal thugs who may do the work for that price.

After all, they would just be doing the work that American thugs won't do.

Do you offer monthly rates? I'm asking for a friend.

A "stick up" involves a person threatening violence if you do not give them money that you have earned honestly.

Operation Peacemaker involves handing over my hard earned money to someone so they do not perform an act of violence.

Sounds like an legal way to perform a criminal act.

Another twist on an old criminal enterprise. The protection racket.

How much do we pay PHH and council members? Can we give them the same amount of pay to NOT go to work? That would prevent a ton of crime, just not the kind that people go to jail for.

Well, the thing is, with rates and all, the problem is that with this situation? I don't know.

I'm getting kind of burned out on the whole thing. I think paying me a sawbuck not to shoot HistoryMike is a reasonable rate, but it turns out PH2 must think I'm offering NET 30 or something, like the other vendors. Or maybe she's thinking NET 120, like all the other city vendors that aren't getting paid. I'm not, by the way, offering any kind of terms. I want my scratch, and the wait staff at Bar 145 are giving me funny looks when I ask about my envelope. The bartender says he already paid, and I know he didn't. Weasel.

I haven't heard from McCaskey lately.
