Toledo Talk

Fried chicken in NW Ohio?

The mention of Chick-fil-A's success in Toledo got me thinking about fried chicken in general. So I have to ask... where are your favorite (non fast food chain) options for fried chicken in the Toledo area?

Sandwiches? Wings? Drums and thighs? Let me know!

Sidelines has good wings. I like the chicken sandwich at the Oliver House pub

Haven't yet tried it but I've heard many positive comments about Zeiler's Farm Market's fried (broasted) chicken. Just over the border in Temperance or Lambertville I believe.

I second Oliver House. The buffalo chicken sandwich they serve is the best I've ever had, hands down.

Third the Oliver house buffalo chicken sandwich with a side of their homemade chips.

Favorite place in Toledo for chicken strips is Blarney. I love the breading they use.

And the brew pub at the OH is now open on Sundays from noon until 8:)

Zeiler's was closed for awhile when the previous owners retired and the new owners remodeled. Their sign says they have broasted chicken again, but I haven't had a chance to try it.

If it's like the former owners' version, it will be delicious!

The wings at Gyro Town are good.

I remember the broasted chicken at Bev's Kold Keg out on Airport used to be incredible but I haven't been out here in quite a while.

I had it at a picnic 2 years ago and it was still really good.

Believe it or not, some of the best fried chicken that I have had in the past few years was from Cracker Barrel.

They have a Sunday fried chicken breast special that is outstanding.

The breasts are coated just right and are very meaty and juicy.

I'm not a big chain restaurant fan, but have to give Cracker Barrel a well deserved pat on the back for this dish. It is consistently outstanding!

Not NW Ohio but up in Blissfield MI is a place called Beckeys Kountry Kitchen. I have not been there in a few years but the friend chicken was a specialty at that time and very good.

Beckey's is REALLY good. I haven't had the fried chicken yet, but definitely will.

Beckey's menu looks like some amazing comfort food. Will definitely add to my bucket list.

Kold Keg, in Swanton. We eat there about once a month. Always terrific. Try the coleslaw. I usually order two.

I think Beckey's Facebook page does much better justice then Yelp and includes a few pictures of their chicken.

I think it's baked, but the chicken at Sauder's Barn restaurant is very delicious. They have a great home-cooked food buffet every day. Worth the drive to Archbold.

Agree on the Cracker Barrel chicken. It is their Sunday special. A few years ago they had a seasonal special that was a chicken breast with a ritz cracker breading I wish they would bring back.

I know the OP didn't want to hear about chains, but Bob Evans has a new chicken on their menu that is really good too.

Visited Beckeys Kountry Kitchen on Rt 223 in Blissfield MI today for the first time in a few years. The fried chicken was better than ever! Definitely a place worth exploring if you are in the mood for fried chicken and it's only about 18 miles from Toledo. They have excellent home made breads like banana bread and many other assortments that are served with your meal. Unpretentious good food that someone is putting a personal touch to. A couple pics from Flicker below.

I kind of wanted to reminisce if you don't mind... Besides the Toledo Express Sunday Family Style Chicken Dinner in the 50's, I wonder if anyone remembers the Saturday night Family Style Chicken Dinner in Van Wert. I worked on a job there in the late 70's
and I went to eat at this downtown Van Wert restaurant on Saturday evenings. It was great. Walking in as a single Guy, the server seated me with a family I didn't know... After that first time, I was invited to sit with others. What great people. I always regretted not settling there but was still sewing wild oats and had to move on... I wonder if the place is still there...

RCH, was it Balyeat's? https://www.facebook.com/Balyeats-Coffee-Shop-111798928857462/?rc=p If so, still there, still good basic food, altho I've never had the fried chicken. :)

Whoa, guess they've had a big change since I was there last, owners sold out and retired, but looks like it's in good hands. Happy for the owners, and the new owner, she's already made some good improvements! http://www.timesbulletin.com/Content/News/News/Article/Getting-to-know-a-risk-taker/2/4/200088

I love going to Van Wert, I am in awe of the wind farm and it's a neat little town.

Do you suppose that's a custard pie she's holding?

I haven't had custard pie in 40 years since my dear, departed Grandmother was no longer able to make them.

I may have to make a trip to Van Wert.......

Thank You nana... As the sign says on FB, "Young Fried Chicken". That's the reason I stopped there that first Saturday night.

I decided that reading the article. Nice alternative to Grand Rapids for the late summer- fall convertible rides.

Justread, make sure of their operating times. It looks like they might close at 3pm now.

We headed out to the zoo but realized it was too late, it was 2:30 and they close at 5, so decided to head to Van Wert and it was really too late, lol, so we headed to Becky's (open till 9p!). Nice little place and the food was very good! He had pollock and I had fried chicken and we really enjoyed the meal. Good tea breads, we had apple and banana. They were bringing out fresh warm peach pie to the front case as we were checking out but we had no room, sadly, and now we regret not bringing a whole one back with us. Going to go back for the Frisco burger and pie soon! As we were leaving, he said, ok, we have a new favorite place, lol. Thanks for the tip, D!

I'm so glad I saw the reviews about Beckeys here.

We were headed back to Toledo from an event in Michigan today, and looking for a place to eat. I suggested to my husband that we stop there, and we were not disappointed!

Everything that our family ordered was delicious. We were there just before noon, so we had a mix of breakfast foods and fried chicken. The apple streusel french toast was so good. The fried chicken was as great as you all said it would be.

I would definitely go there again! My only disappointment was that we were all too full to try any of the pies this visit. :)

Glad you guys enjoyed Beckey's as much as we did. I think the surprise is how good the breads and pies are in addition to the chicken. We did bring home a whole peach pie and devoured it bathed in vanilla ice cream. I'm truly glad it's 30 minutes away because if it was closer I'd be buying new pants.

We were at Becky's again on Friday (they keep sending coupons in my email!) and I was disappointed in the philly. It looked good on the menu but looked nothing like the pic in real life...the meat was scant (altho tasty) and the bun too big and too dry. I asked for a little italian dressing to maybe soften/perk it up, but they don't offer it as a choice! Strange. I ended up eating the meat and cheese out and leaving the bread behind.

I paid $1 extra for the onion rings and they were dripping grease and not very hot.

On our second visit on 7/1, I had a 1/2lb bacon burger and it was great. I will still try something different next time, but the philly and rings are permanently off my list of what's good there.

Sorry! Forgot this was a fried chicken thread! The Hub had the chicken on our second visit and loved it! :)
