Toledo Fireworks Guide

Not sure how accurate the info is seeing the error in Toledo's fireworks and they have the location for ours listed as Promenade park:

Yeah, that's not right. I just sent them a note about it.

Are any locations designated "gang free" crossfire zones so I can avoid being caught inbetween rival gangs?

There is a gang free zone, but it's near the Sylvania Country Club.

I guess that's what happens when you live on the edge of gangland in Toledo

In hockeyfan's defense (just this one time!) ... I never would have thought about a connection between fireworks and gang violence until it JUST HAPPENED AT MAUMEE BAY STATE PARK. I assume his jab was more about the fireworks connection, and less about the downtown landscape. But you know what they say about "assume" making an ass of u and me!

The howler monkeys to the west of me are getting started early this year, which kept me awake until 1:00 AM. I even like fireworks, but isn't there some kind of curfew for this crap in Lucas County?

Then at 3:02 AM something went off with an explosion loud enough to shake the windows in the house. I'm guessing an IED taken aloft by a balloon or something. I'm thinking hydrogen, as it's easy to manufacture.

I'd complain, but to whom, or to what bureaucracy?

I feel your pain madjack.

I don't mean to be a negative nancy. I used to enjoy going across the MLK Bridge to the east side, parking and watching the show. People were nice, polite, and even friendly. Then, after 2 consecutive years of run-ins with rude people, I stopped going. How and why people have to take a pretty cool event and celebration and turn it into a, "My view is more important than yours so I'll almost run you over while I park my SUV right in front of you and your chairs. Hey, I need to get a good spot, the show begins in 5 minutes and you didn't expect me to show up reasonably early? I can just squeeze in front of you."

Staying at home isn't much fun either. About a week ago I was working in the garage and thought I heard a string of those firecrackers that go off, pow, pow, pow, one after another really fast. I thought nothing of it, although there has been shootings in the area. ( I am stuck living near "The Palms" showgirl bar). Anyway, I was working on a riding mower and it was about 11pm so after I was done, I opened to garage door to let the fumes out. A cop car was outside the door. He asked if I was the one who called about the gun shots. I explained that I thought they were firecrackers cause they were so fast. The officers told me that it was an automatic gun fired in the Palms parking lot. Of course, no witnesses and even though there are cameras aimed at the parking lot, no video tape. I'm guessing the owner doesn't want to scare off his drug dealers by turning them in.

My only hope for this 4th of July is to survive, preferably without getting shot and/or loading my pants due to a random m80 or other exploding device that sounds like it went off in one of my windows. Or maybe, just maybe this year the "locals" will quit their personal celebration of Independence Day sometime before dawn Tuesday.

It's the small things in life.

Oh wow. You live near the Palms? What's it like over there? We drive by all the time, but have no clue what the neighborhood is like.

It's been oddly quiet this year in year in the OWE. Typically this weekend is nuts but it's been relatively quiet.... so far....

The neighborhood sucks. Recently someone put their home up for sale, by owner, and the Palms owner made them an offer so he could house his "entertainers" there. Yes, he told them that too. They refused the offer, thank goodness.

There are constant drug deals going on in the Palms parking lot and in front of our houses. A car sits there most anytime of the day, then another car pulls up beside it. There seems to be hands going back and forth between the cars, then they both leave. Calls to the cops about it are funny. The cops want you to get their car descriptions and license plate numbers. Then they want you to call the drug squad so they can add the plate numbers to their "watch files". Yep, that's what I want. To be seen writing down drug dealer plates from my house. I might as well paint a target on the front too.

But the topper has to be last weekend when I noticed someone stole 2 juice jugs filled with water off my front porch. These weren't bottled water jugs, but old juice jugs that I filled with water to water my plants. Who does that? That means they had to open the door, walk on my porch, ignoring the plants, pots and potting soil bags, then steal 2 jugs of water. They might have been looking to break into the house, but I'm sure my dogs were going crazy and barking up a storm when they heard them on the porch. I know the time frame cause I wasn't home for a short bit and that's when they disappeared. I'm still in shock over it. Now I have to lock my porch door. And now I'm considering installing a video camera on the front of the house. Who needs this aggravation?

I hate to say it, but Toledo wins. I give up. My health isn't what it used to be and my energy level to combat the "negative" just isn't there anymore. Toledo has ground me down since I got here. There have been some changes in my life recently and if a few more things fall into place, I'll be moving out of Toledo. It's sad because I really liked Toledo when I moved here and there's still some great things about Toledo, but having to deal with some of it just isn't worth it. Maybe Toledo, for me, is a great place to visit, but not worth living here.

And when I said "good things", this is actually from the eastside of Toledo.

"The howler monkeys to the west of me are getting started early this year, which kept me awake until 1:00 AM. I even like fireworks, but isn't there some kind of curfew for this crap in Lucas County?"

This is definitely my least favorite time of the year. If the bombers limited their destruction only to July 4, then fine. But the onslaught begins at least a week before, and it amps up a bit more each night. Last night was brutal. And it doesn't help that our dog is terrified of the explosions.

And at 9:20 a.m. today, we were under attack again.

My plan for July 4 has been to out-loud the slackjaws, but I lack the necessary item.

Do you know where I can buy a World War II Carter Air Raid siren?

About mid-afternoon on July 4 when the the carpet bombing is in full swing, I would crank up the siren in attack mode, and I would sit on a lawn chair in our front yard with a colander on my head.

What could anyone do? Call the cops. What could the police do to me? Write me up for disturbing the peace while illegal rockets of red glare burst all around us.

I would claim that I'm warning the intelligent neighbors to take cover because of the incoming.

Demonstration of the Carter air raid siren. The dude has a couple hand-cranked versions in his booth, but that smacks of effort.

The old Carter siren is small but mighty. They finally turn it on at the 1:30 mark.

This carpenter built is own air raid siren.

@hockeyfan if you don't mind me asking, what brought you to that neighborhood in the first place? Sounds like a real bummer.

@jr, I totally need one of those sirens.

Something went off and shook the windows in my house at about 1am. Then, just in case I missed it, another one went off about 15 minutes later.

Where do these people get the money to buy so many fireworks? They aren't cheap.

Here you go, JR.

Air Raid

This is the Chrysler Air-raid Siren, and according to Wikipedia:

Its six horns were each 3 feet (91 cm) long. The siren could be heard 20 to 25 miles (32 to 40 km) away, and had an output of 138 dBC (30,000) watts. They were 12 feet (3.7 m) long, built atop a quarter section of a Dodge truck chassis rail, and weighed an estimated 3 short tons (2.7 t).

This should give the neighbors something to talk about - once their hearing returns. I recommend you put it on some kind of timer, then take a little getaway vacation with your critters. Just a thought.

Thanks, madjack.

We're taking heavy fire this evening. Casualties thus far have been light.

This afternoon, we moved our readiness to DEFCON 1, the most severe level.

We are contemplating the usage of acetylene bombs like in the olden days.
