Toledo Talk

Uber question

I'm buying a "new" used car in Southfield and am not trading in the old one, so I need a ride there to pick it up. I'd rather not ask a friend to drive two and a half hours round trip for something that only benefits me and isn't a crisis, so I'm considering using Uber. I'm fairly flexible on when I go. Am I likely to get a response from Uber for a drive like that?

If they go nearby, perhaps one of the casino busses could drop you off nearby for about $15 plus give you some coupons to take the "new" car the the casino to try to win enough to offset the "new" vehicle price.

I have used Uber to DTW airport before so they would probably go to Southfield. I was told that since Detroit is out of their area the drivers aren't required to go there and to make sure to contact the driver as soon as he accepts the ride to tell them where you are going (the driver has no clue as to where you are going until they get to your pick up spot). If you contact the driver you won't have to wait for another Uber if they decline the ride and they aren't out their time and gas picking you up.

I tell the driver I am going to DTW and will tip them well and haven't had an issue getting a ride to the airport.

I was told by an uber driver that took me to DTW one time that Detroit is out of their service area so they can't pick up a passenger in Detroit and have to drive back to the Toledo area for more rides. Same if I do uber from DTW home, the Detroit uber driver can't pick up fares in Toledo, so I would be sure to tip the driver very nicely.

Classylady, Thanks for the info, that was exactly what I needed to know. It's a shame they can't pick up a return trip, that's not very efficient!

Bulldog, I already tapped a friend but will keep you in mind for the future. Approximately how much is a trip to DTW?

Around $50

Bulldog: Would you consider $20 to be an appropriate tip between DTW and Toledo? I didn't know a Toledo uber driver couldn't pick up at Detroit so I want to make sure he's compensated appropriately.

Yes, $20 would be appropriate. This covers the 45 min to an hour drive back where the driver cannot accept pickups (Ohio Uber drivers cannot pickup customers in Michigan).

Uber states that tips are included in the fare, but we all know thats really not true. At least a couple bucks should be customary on all trips.

Thanks Bulldogbuckeye. I usually tip $20+ one way to a metro car driver so figured it was appropriate for Uber, I just feel bad taking uber to or from Metro since the driver is stuck driving back home without being able to pick up any more fares.

Uber needs to change their wording on tips and also include a tip feature like Lyft. I travel a lot and usually tip $5 to and from an Airport (it's local trips in other cities where the driver can continue to pick up after my drop offs). And even going from a downtown bar to my place in the downtown area I always tip the driver a couple of dollars even though it's only around a mile trip (I'm not lazy and walk and bike a lot but if I've been walking/biking all day sometimes I'm just not up for the walk home and also sometimes have safety issues if I'm alone and have had too much drink).
