Toledo Talk

Rough around the edges

Ok, the premise of this thread is a little ridiculous.

My friend from LA will be passing through Toledo next week and he'd really like to see the rough around the edges parts of our Rustbelt city. Think "Ruin Porn" in regards to cool old buildings that are falling apart...

Where would you send my friend, if he wanted to see the worst of the worst of Toledo. Econcat, where you at?

Right now I'm thinking parts of North Toledo might be interesting.... as well spots like the Willow cemetery on the east side:

Sounds like a cool friend upso. Dont waste time seeing hensville, flower pots, bike racks and murals, because far more interesting things exsist throughout the city.

Theres plenty to see within a range of a few blocks to a few miles of your doorsteps. Too many highlights to only choose one.

If you haven't been to UT's Scott Park campus recently you may want to put it on the list. There are still some departments left over there but I don't think any classes. It's got a super weird "empty but inhabited" vibe to it - not unlike a dying mall. That section of Fearing Blvd near there is also weird.

I drive around town a lot for work and this subject has me thinking of all of the empty corner store/neighborhood bar/ restaurants scattered throughout the city. Such a strange remnant of another era that will likely never return to Toledo. Would make for a good photo series.

Utah street on the East Side. Ugh. melted siding from arson, lots o ordinary garbage, so very many boarded up houses. Or just take a cruise out Nebraska starting downtown.

Take him up and down the river--good mix of industry toward the lake, and beautiful houses toward Perrysburg and Maumee.

Erie Canal locks near Maumee? Cool ruins, maybe not "urban decay."

The old Park Hotel by the amtrack would be great to walk through. Maybe you could find someone to let you into the Pythian?

Check out Bush or Vance between Hawley & City Park. Rough doesn't even begin to describe those streets.

Is this an armed or unarmed tour?

It's a shame that we actually have recommendations

Not really! Most cities have bad spots. We have a good amount of bad and good, but some (like my friend) are more interested in the visuals of the bad. :)

Our bad spots are nothing compared to LA's:) You should drive him up to Detroit if he wants to see real rough

Haha, Detroit is on his list after Toledo. :)

I stopped at the Original Sub Shop today, sat by the front window, saw the old Park Hotel across the street, and thought that area might be sufficienly bad for your friend. But I'd rather show an out-of-towner the murals along Broadway.

Park Hotel area isn't bad during the day. I bike by there a lot with no issues.

This is a good site with some abandoned buildings:

Take a hike along the river and see if there's anything left of Vollmars Park.
