New Restaurant on Monroe

So I was looking at the city planning commission active file listings to see what was going in near my home - looks like another used car lot :(

However, a submission was received on 7/7/2016 to build a new restaurant and parking lot at 5060 Monroe, the old Lonestar next to the vacant Pizza Hut. Those two parcels have been an eye sore going on a decade it seems like.

Has anyone heard anything? It doesn't say what restaurant it will be just that they received the plans.

Also they are building Phase 2 at westgate and one of the new stores will be a Blaze Pizza. Which I've only had once and it was great. Blaze Pizza is like a chipotle style fast food place.

Sorry for the hijack. 1986. My mom was test driving a sweet, used 84 Buick Regal from Brondes for the weekend. Went to Pizza Hut on Monroe to cash in my Book It pizza. Played the table top Donkey Kong. Ate my personal pan, drank Pepsi out of the red cup. Went out to the parking lot and the hub caps had been stolen. Long story short, we ended up with an earlier 80's Skylark.

Just had Blaze for the first time Wednesday night in South Bend. It was great. Looking forward to having one here.

I also heard that they are putting in a Fuzzy's Taco there. May just be a rumor.

Looks like its a fact. Just went on the Westgate Village FB page and on June 9th they posted that Fuzzy Taco is coming as part of the new development.

Never had it, but that's a lot of tacos in a 1/4 mile range (Taco Bell, Del Taco and Fuzzy Taco - along with Chipotle.)

I find it interesting that they are able to get so many new / new to us chains in this new development. I for one welcome our new taco overlords.

Don't forget Fusion Sushi is part of the Whole Foods development. So you have:

Piadas
Fusion
Blaze Pizza
Fuzzy Taco

And Mac and Melts - although it is more local.

Also, Cricket West has put substantial funds into updating their building. New Roof, Exterior Paint, Brick/Wood Repair. Looking pretty nice.

Red Robin has updated their exterior, Hooters finally painted and changed the color of their exterior and the strip mall where Outback is located is redoing theirs (adding brick columns and redoing the fašade) as well.

Looks like some of these places have realized they need to update to keep up with the newer developments.

I agree. Del Taco shouldn't even be counted among them. One of the worst places I've ever eaten in my life.

Great news about Blaze! Agree with foodie that Del Taco shouldn't be counted, I like them a lot better than Taco Bell but they are fast food. I know we'll never see this unless they expand to the Midwest which is very doubtful, but I'd love to see In 'N out come here.

A restaurant I think would fit in great in the Westgate area is Burger Works. I ate at one in Denver and liked it. They are owned by red robin and have all of Red Robin's burgers and fries but don't have any alcohol or the appetizers, mainly just their sandwiches and their fries and salads. You order at the counter and they bring the meal to your table when it's done (which is really fast) on a fast food type tray in a basket with plastic silver ware and the soda is self serve. I think they would do good in that area seeing a few other recently opened restaurants in that area have that same concept for ordering. Doubt that will happen either with a red robin so close by. I like the Burger works concept better than Red Robins, I am in and out a lot faster, don't have to wait on a server to take your order or pay a tip, and it's the same burger that I'd get at Red Robin.

Foodie, I will respectfully disagree. Del Taco is one of the best things going. Unless you're averse to drive-thru places in general, they are light years ahead of the competition. Everything they serve is higher quality than Taco Bell. I go there at least once or twice a month... probably 80 times since they opened. It's cheap and delicious. They rarely disappoint.

The new restaurant on monroe could be a Buffalo Wings And Rings. An article in the paper said they plan to franchise the area and are looking for sites. The full service chain / casual dining format would fit in with other places by the mall.

^^^ Good memory. I do remember that being floated a while back. Personally I would like that style of sports bar - the area is actually lacking a BW3 concept restaurant (some may consider hooters that style but I am not a fan).

Never hear of Burger Works - but count me in as a fan. Love a great burger.

That's fine mixman. To each their own. That's why Baskin Robbins has so many flavors.

We gave them a try - twice - years ago and they were awful. The food was obviously not fresh, dried out and inedible. Perhaps they've changed but I'll never know.

I can take or leave Del Taco. Buffalo Wings & Rings looks great. Mixman, where on Monroe are you talking about?

As for Mac & Melts? Noooooo thank you.

Haha, just sticking up for one of my favs.

OP said 5060 Monroe. It's where Lonestar, En Japanese - and going back farther - Emerson's used to be. Another article said that site and the pizza hut next door have stayed vacant because making a left turn in from monroe is tough. I don't buy that, though.

Xbuckeyex-If you like Red Robin, you'll like Burgerworks, if not you won't since it's the same burgers. Just served in a fast food type atmosphere instead of a sit down restaurant type.

Hasn't the pizza hut on Glendale and Reynolds been closed for a while as well? I moved from the FP mall area in 2001 and the pizza hut on Monroe by Talmadge had been shuttered for a long time then. I'm surprised it's been boarded up that long, seems like a prime business location.

Speaking of pizza hut I haven't seen their wingstreet food truck downtown this summer

posted by jamesteroh on Jul 29, 2016 at 02:29:30 pm     #

I was told the wingstreet food truck is long gone. It just wasn't as popular as pizza hut was hoping, so it's off to a new market.

posted by upso on Jul 29, 2016 at 03:26:53 pm     #

That Pizza Hut has been closed since at least 1992. But it had been in business for a long time before that, so the "tough left turn" reason doesn't make much sense. Been a long running mystery why the hell that property has been untouched for this long. Across the street from a successful mall is usually primo real estate. I mean...25+ years? Those tire stores next door to it have been going strong for a long, long time.

And that former Longhorn location, I remember when that was the old Benihana. Great place.

They're OK but nothing special. However, better than the local chains El Vaquero, Cinco de Mayo, El Caminos, etc.

I did a search on local Mexican restaurants and was surprised to find so many I've never heard of which I will have to check out.

And, I'd agree, better than seeing nothing going on there.

Really? I hadn't heard that.

I've eaten at one in the Cincinnati area - we were looking for a fast meal that wasn't greasy fast food, and that's where we ended up. I enjoyed the food.

It will probably do well in the Westgate area.

I thought the old big boy on Monroe street is where Ciao is now. I believe the Big Boy in BG is still open and there is a big boy across the street from the remote parking lot I use when I fly out of DTW (I believe Merimain is the name of the road). I believe the one on Secor is still open and there may be another one, I'm not a fan of big boy and only time I go is when friends insist on going.

Speaking of Big Boy, I wonder if anything will go into the old Big Boy on Summit. That place has been vacant for at least a few years and there is still something on their sign that says "Now Open".

The article mentions access from Talmadge. Given the alleged turn issue, a second access point will probably be good. Looking at the satellite map, I wonder if On The Border will use the tennis courts from the apartment complex behind their lot to connect things. Also in question: will they keep or scrap the old circular drive in front? Glad to see something going in there and a Mexican restaurant, no less!

You used to be able to access Lonestar's parking lot from the north side of Michael's. Not sure how publicized that was or if it was just something we figured out when I was younger...

At least this is Tex-Mex and not Mexican, which any decent Tex-Mex is really lacking around here. Of course I doubt we'll see many of the excellent retail brands from Texas and Oklahoma make their way up there. Granted OTB is a Dallas-chain I believe, but I wouldn't rate them as high as I would the others I've use to.

posted by JustaSooner on Aug 12, 2016 at 03:23:21 pm     #

An access road to talmadge is smart. Hopefully it runs all the way behind the Pizza Hutas well, may help that sell.

Speaking of access roads, they really need something that runs from central and between Sears, Elder Bearman and the two new outlots. Cars just whip through there, zig zagging every which way.

posted by Xbuckeyex on Aug 12, 2016 at 05:52:37 pm     #

Heh heh. When they fly around the corner, towards Sonic and the bank building, everyone comes to a dead stop because patrons from the car wash are lovingly hand-drying their cars ... in the middle of the traffic lanes. It's like there's no awareness of what's a parking lot and what's an active roadway :-)

posted by viola on Aug 12, 2016 at 06:50:56 pm     #

Count that as a win for Toledo. About as bland as you can get in the Mexican chain food circles.

Bumpity Bump

They have multiple bulldozers on site today clearing all the old concrete and breaking ground. It appears to be a Twin Peaks - sports bar similar to Hooters. After 20 years or so its kinda odd seeing work being done at this location.

Also - Planning commission meeting is posted at the corner of Monroe and Strang (cut through street by mall between Kohls/Dave and Busters)

My guess is that it will be a stand alone restaurant in that corner of the parking lot. Has anyone heard anything. I wasn't going to stop in traffic to read the applicant but something is going on there as well.
