Nothing to see here I'm sure. Move along.

I didn't think the article was very clear on where the injury was - was there something on the back of his head AND the front (indicating he was hit in the back and then fell forward) or just one injury on one side of the head (indicating IMO a drunk a$$ fall).

But the police didn't post it as a statistic because it was an 'injury' not a 'crime' indicating that it was in fact a drunk a$$ fall.

Before he was a politician, Steele was known for having music jams at his house during the Old West End Festival where the pot smoke was thick. That's why I always thought it was ironic when he became a school board member. A real burn out.

People pleez, let us show a little compassion for our local elected lead-ers. Has anyone checked to see if there was a slight earthquake in the vicinity like maybe Ida, Mich. or Hicksville Ohio which might have sent a ripple up and down Adams St. that night? A timely sonic boom by the 180th night maneuvers of F-15's. How about foot gear? Was he wearing expensive Italian loafers which are very slick on pavement. And check with his fellow councilperson Lindsey Webb concerning the condition of the city owned sidewalk which might need critical repair before the roadways are made passable again. Let's not discount the possibility of union thuggery and maybe get the nsa to check the phone traffic of all the burbs' mayors for any sign of conspiracy and collusion. (leave out Rossford's he's on the side of the angels) He may have turned his iphone to a Carol King song when she sings "I felt the earth move..." Trump seems to have left some Dems unbalanced and off-balanced. There is a chance this was merely a drink and dash which went horribly wrong. It might be time for all the taxpayers to agree that safety helmuts should be issued and use mandated to all city council.

It's a longer route for him to stagger or drive home from Monroe and Erie than his usual staggering route to the OWE from Adams Street.

Along with his 2002 alcohol related arrest in Toledo, Steele has a 1992 dui conviction from Wood County.

It's unclear from the articles as to who gave information to the police, but a report was made about the incident. And though he says he "thinks" things happened a number of times, he does say in the first article, I was hit in the back of the head and I have an abrasion in the front of my head. I guess it depends what he said to the police vs what he said to the reporter.

While I've never defended the Blade or their completely unveiled biases and agendas, it's irresponsible to write this situation off as JRB being out to get someone. The #2 in our city government was on video getting absolutely tanked, refused friends who tried to stop him from leaving because he was so visibly unstable, he leaves very intoxicated, ends up passed out in a parking lot with a head wound, and says he must've been attacked. This isn't like the Blade is doing some no-holds-barred digging into his personal life to drag him down or something.

http://www.13abc.com/content/news/Steve-Steel-talks-about-night-he-was-found-unconscious-in-parking-lot-414411273.html

As for lessons learned by this incident, Steel says, "I'll be more careful in terms of people buying me drinks in bars. If that's what people expect, that's what they expect."

Did he just blame his unconscious-in-public drinking on the people who buy him drinks in bars? Because those people expect him to drink with them? They made him drink, you see. He is quite powerless in the situation, I guess. So much for being a leader.

Avoidance of personal responsibility and assignment of blame for your actions to others disturbs me much more than somebody who fell over drunk leaving a bar.

One is a mistake that we should forgive. The other is a character flaw that we should not forget.

I love how Steel says ,"he never drinks and drives." Knowing damn well he was going to drive home that night before he came down with the low speed wobbling effect of slamming down drink after drink.

He is lucky he fell because had he drove his vehicle, he could of killed someone or himself..

This new updated story is fresh off the press courtesy of The Blade.

Not to "pivot" the thread because it is part of the overall story but kinda have a problem with the use of the video feed from Table44. Can understand if TPD asks for it pursuing an investigation into possible criminal activity the owner/management of an estblishment is going to be co-operative and supply the video for the period in question. Since it has hit the TV airways and was stated that it was provvided by TPD when does it become public property to dispense with to anyone. Sure does make a customer a little queasy thinking your patronage, what you had to eat, who you were with at what time and what and how you consume purchased beverages is fair game to show up on the evening news due to circumstances well beyond your personal control. That one seems to be a hangout for local pols so there are two reasons not to go there.

To Mariner's point: I believe it was obtained in a FOI request.
Cameras are everywhere. The trick is to not need the police, and not to suggest a mugging if you wake up and still have your wallet. No police investigation... no freedom of information request... no public display of cameras. Choose wisely when you invite The Actual Man into your life. We didn't all see him drinking because he was at Table 44. We all saw it because he had an unsolved mystery that the police became involved in.

If I get killed in some strange murderous incident on my way home from lunch, what I had for lunch that day will be on Investigation Discovery being read by a guy who sounds like Bill Kurtis.

Mike21-So, you have a bunch of criticisms about the city...vis a vis, the bartender should get fired? I don't totally understand how your anger at the city translates into some poor guy getting the axe , just because a member of city council doesn't know how to slow down or say no.

How about this? Table Forty4 reviews their standard operating procedure. If the bartender was in violation of how they operate and how they have historically allowed bartenders to operate, then, disciplinary action may occur, which could potentially lead to termination. If they routinely serve 3 boilermakers in 30 minutes to guests, they maybe shouldn't. Since we're all talking about personal responsibility, and Steel was SURROUNDED by city government officials, let's not cast the stone at the hired help.

posted by ahmahler on Feb 23, 2017 at 09:07:03 am     #   2 people liked this

ahmaler - my criticisms (not anger) about our city - which I have made known for years on previous threads - have nothing to do with "some poor guy getting the axe". Remember 'the poor guy' who got the axe because he sold booze to an underage kid and that booze got another underage kid killed in a car wreck in Ottawa Hills? Fox Licquor store is no more because of a couple of 'poor guys' who who didn't take personal responsibility. The state only takes action against bars when someone dies or is seriously hurt because of overserving and occasionally will send underage people in to bars and carryouts to try to purchase alcohol around prom season. I was in the bar/restaurant business here for 25 years and fired people who would overserve drunk people. I wasn't going to lose everything I worked for or endanger one of my irresponsible guests for a few extra bucks. It IS a bartender's personal responsibility to know when to cut someone off and management's/owner's personal responsibility to make sure their servers are doing their job. The stone does indeed need to be cast at the hired help and management. I agree 100% with your suggestion on what 44 should do. My response to dino was a bit tounge in cheek (jr - we need a sarcasm font for such comments). This incident - like all the ones I mentioned - will be forgotten about in a few days with the next news cycle. I'm not angry with the city - I love it here. Despite it's many flaws, there is an overwhelmingly large amount of positives that make it a great place to grow up, live, work and raise a family. I can live anywhere but I still chose to live here.

Whenever someone says "they should have cut that guy off", I get a bit angry.

Bartenders are compensated directly by how much alcohol they sell. The more drinks, the more tips. THAT is a direct and strong incentive to continue selling in more and more risky ways -

If you want to really honestly enforce that culture of the bartender cutting people off, then we should be advocating for living wages for serving staff and eliminating tipping as a system. If you pay people as professionals, you can have professional levels of expectation for them and expect to be able to enforce those rules, whether around service quality, safety, or any other benchmark you want to set.

Expecting someone who a living based on customer tips to NOT try to make their customers happy at all costs is unrealistic at best.

I mean, I don't disagree. I'm just saying that if you want to be realistic about it, you're going to have a very hard time having that level of control or enforce-ability when the income of someone trying to make rent and buy food is tied directly to the quantity of alcohol being slung across the bar.
