Toledo Talk

I was going this was an April Fool's Joke

http://www.toledoblade.com/Politics/2017/04/03/Group-wants-pay-raises-for-13-Toledo-officials.html

They can say this with a straight face? Looking at the commission, I'm not at all surprised--quid pro quo and all of that business as usual stuff. I and surprised The Stain was on the commission and even more surprised he's the voice of reason.

What the hell is Sykes even saying? I know what he's TRYING to say, but FFS.

I might be in favor of paying more for the best and brightest as soon as we actually find someone who fits the bill. That sure as hell isn't Larry Sykes.

Larry Sykes is a stupid and violent felon, and a professional racist. Filter everything he says through that, and you'll have a better understanding of the world, as seen through the eyes of a man hole cover.

What, exactly, do you expect from city government? I mean that literally, and I'm discounting the elite cadré of mental midgets that won the last popularity contest. That includes PH2, who should have been tried and found guilty of gross negligence and incredible stupidity three hours after she took office.

Toledo city council has one member with a clue, and another with half a clue. The rest are blatantly stupid, ignorant, self-serving professional SIG supporters and have no business being in office.

And while I'm at it, I recommend that a group of patriotic vigilantes lay violent hands on The Stain, duct tape him into a telephone booth and ship him off to Nauru.

Pardon me while I freshen my drink.

So I get that they are trying to go back in time to previous 2009 salaries. Like, I get it. They don't get paid a lot for what they do, at least in theory.

And it's awesome that the economy is good enough to somehow warrant this increase in salaries, though I would like to see a city wide audit of what we're spending on what before ANY raises are made.

But from an appearances standpoint... they have to understand how bad this looks. Yet, somehow they don't.

I would suggest smaller increases over a multi year scheme. The mayor does NOT deserve a 14k a year increase based on her previous performance. Council DEFINITELY does not deserve a 12k raise based on their lack of performance.

And don't get me wrong, I like a lot of these people. But Toledo is in a bad bad place financially. The audacity to suggest now is the time for a 10k+ bump in pay when things haven't gotten any more expensive to live in Toledo is really offensive.

My neighborhood's roads are crumbling. Fix the infrastructure so people want to stay here, so people want to move here, so the tax base increases, so we can justify paying our elected officials more.

"You Will Do Better in Toledo"

Right after you have your vehicle repaired from the bus swallowing pothole because you dared take your eyes off the road long enough to read one of these stupid signs placed around the city.

With the exception of a few bright spots happening in and around the city, Toledo continues its journey down the financial sh*t hole.

But, until YOU, the People, wake up, stop putting the same morons back in office and demand some accountability, nothing will change.

But, until YOU, the People, wake up, stop putting the same morons back in office and demand some accountability, nothing will change.

I agree with you, however, there's a small problem, maybe two. Yes, at least two, I think.

Number one, who are The Great Unwashed going to elect instead of the usual suspects? Just ignore the insane amounts of voter ignorance, establishment SIG support, and the attendant publicity paid for by the SIGs. You want someone who is reasonably intelligent, experienced in the practical functions of local government, and who is moralistic and incorruptible. While such people exist, it's extremely rare that you'll find such a person running for office - at least in Toledo. What you're suggesting amounts to electing a candidate that doesn't exist.

Number two, The Great Unwashed can (collectively or individually) make all the demands it likes. The howling will be ignored. The Grand Poo-Bah is now in office and can do as he likes without fear of reprisal until the next election, which he has a year to prepare for. He also has the support of the SIGs that elected him the first go-round, and, unless he's done something incredibly stupid, will re-elect him without any qualms at all.

The third problem, which is inherent in the democratic process, is that this is a popularity contest. Get it? Physical appearance matters, as do reputation and éclat (I've been waiting three weeks to use that word in a sentence. Hot damn!). Give me a candidate who is good looking, is prominent in a middle-of-the-road style local church, and who has done some time as a stand up comic, and you'll have a brand new moron in office right after the next election. Just imagine a seasoned stand up comedian debating Larry Sykes in a public forum. Sykes would get barbecued so badly it would be three days before his eyes would uncross.

Toledo is a gravel pit. Even if someone discovered a lake of oil under the city and it became the next Kuwait, you'd still be stuck with the same old idiots running the government. Just be glad things aren't worse than they are.

Have to add the condition that if you are not annointed by the local media, controlled and subdued to puppet training, any candidate is going to get fried and spit out quick. Late on a student loan? Hardly a federal felony armed bank robbery but good enough to make you look like a world class piker. The causation for the political atmosphere and downward future belongs in a narrow focus. Organized labor thinks it has a toe-in at control but they are a self deluded bunch who have trouble lacing up their own shoes.

I don't disagree with either of you madjack and Mariner. However, people get the government they deserve. Lazy, uninterested voters get lazy, uninterested elected dipsticks. And this region has an abundance of both.

As for the media, stop supporting it. Stop buying/reading the local daily rag and their ad revenue will dry up. Stop watching the "local" news - most of which is neither local or news - as well as the rest of the mindless drivel they pass along from their network affiliates and their ad revenue will dry up.

There are so many more ways to remain informed.
