Toledo Talk

Why the free advertising for UT

Coming into Toledo on Northbound I-75 we see a huge yellow and blue Toledo Rockets sign on the Nebraska Road overpass. Does the University of Toledo pay for this huge advertisement? At least when Carleton Finkbeiner was Mayor it said Toledo Pride. And how about the city garage just a little farther north on I-75? Lots of ads for various Toledo businesses on the wall as well. Do these businesses pay for these ads? If not it's time for the city to quit giving away free ad space or remove them. Hey, Paula Hicks Hudson, you want more revenue, here's an idea for you.

Not sure of the financials but I guess they hit the intended ad demo with you. I'm just trying to drive and not get smashed into a wall by a semi, especially at the 75/475 split going north bound on 75 by the garage

Toledo doesn't give things away for free. Even their incompetence is billed on the water/sewer statement as a fee.

This has been a pet peeve of mine for years. Im all for community pride and some synergy with the university....but that looks totally cheap and unprofessional. Its embarrassing. Get rid of that thing already!

I remember when it was red and said "Toledo Prid"

I agree it looks cheap. I hate it when groups hang up those banners advertising events as well.

Owens Corning is always hanging up banners advertising events they are sponsoring above the small bridge on Washington Street that leads to their headquarters. I think those look tacky but I'm sure the city is happy they are staying in the downtown area and not moving to the burbs like OI did.

Did it really say "Toledo Prid" I remember in college when the "Toledo Alive" promo was going on hearing about some promo material that get misprinted as "Toledo Adive" The latter is a more accurate description sometimes.

Pretty sure it was Mike Bell that switched it to UT (not PHH).

It was Mike Bell that had the current one put up.

Your correct toledolen it was Bell. The state's ODOT which regulates ads on interstates had no say because the city owned the building and of course as a past state Fire Marshall Bell had the necessary phone numbers to call. Similar to building permits, inspections on the rush to put Hensville together all for an opening day one day game the rules get ignored when politics rears it's lovely head. Private sector efforts still need to weave the governmental quagmire.
