Councilwoman Harper at it again

It seems Councilwoman Yvonne Harper -- who once told a critical supervisor she knew many "important people" -- is now bullying teenage fast food workers. This is a Facebook post from a teenage fast food worker who had an unfortunate encounter with the councilwoman. With the post was a picture of the councilwoman's business card Ms. Harper apparently gave them to punctuate her threats:

"It's sad that a woman like this represents our city. She came through the drive thru at my work today and did nothing but insult and degrade us. There was no conflict prior to the comments she made, a coworker of mine was simply confused because she gave us the wrong amount of money. She then asked her about it so Yvonne replied with "what grade are you in, high school or grade school?" That's where I stepped in and explained why she was confused, but Yvonne proceeded to say stuff along the lines of "you're all unintelligent" and "learn how to do math," when her total was $7.70 and she handed us $10.25. After taking many of these comments with a smile on my face I broke and began to defend myself, she then stated that's she was very important and that we wouldn't hear the end of this. She handed us her card that stated she was a city councilwomen, as if that justifies her actions. This woman is nothing but a bully in my eyes.

Edit: The point of this post was not to bash her. I just don't understand why someone would be so rude to working teenagers when we were just trying to do our job."

What I find disgusting about her response is the pathetic self-pity. This wouldn't have happened to her if she weren't a public official, she says. Abusive behavior by fast food customers is not abnormal and not news. But she's the one who identified herself as a public official and with that identification promised a teenage girl that she'd never hear the end of it. This woman is beneath contempt.

Why is the local Democrat Party not calling for her resignation given this and previous incidents and that she is acknowledged to be an "idiot"?

Why is the local news not giving us a full anal probe on the incident, the motivation analysis, sob stories about the trauma of the victim, interviews with associates who remain anonymous, and most importantly an everyday recounting of her previous incidents so we know just what kind of person she really is?

Why? Why does her party, and the house organ that supports it, tacitly approve of this behavior by not intensively question her fitness for office?

Why?

And, it works very well for them.

Lindsay Webb planted some roses on her Facebook page and told her that flowers grow from dirt. To my knowledge, no other member of council has spoken to it.

There ought to be a council inquiry into her behavior. If she does not want to speak to it, censure her based on the evidence before her. There is no excuse for her conduct. The person she harassed was a child, for crying out loud.

Local media may not yet be on this because it is labor day weekend. Without assignment editors to do the phone work necessary to do the story justice. It may have legs come Tuesday.

Addendum: I hear a lot about bullying these days and how we all should go out of our way to fight it where we find it.

I cannot think of a more textbook case of bullying than what is before me in this news story. Powerful adult vs. teenager at a fast food place. Threats of repercussions. "Do you know who I am?"-type of power projection purposefully done to elicit fear.

So, where is the Democrat Party response to the bullying victim in this case? Please let us know the victimhood crap we hear nonstop from the social justice warrior crowd isn't just words when an elected official bullies a citizen. Where is the support for the victim? Where is the censure? Where is the denouncement?

Because if Tom Waniewski had committed this act, the local union political machine and the house organ would already be demanding a resignation "so the community and the victim can heal.".

From OldHomeTown: _ Why does her party, and the house organ that supports it, tacitly approve of this behavior by not intensively question her fitness for office?_

Look at the way her peers behave, particularly Sykes. They get away with bad behavior because the people continue to vote them into office, and the news media gives them tacit approval for whatever offensive stunt they pulled today. This isn't unusual behavior for Harper. She's been down this road many times before, and the excursion has never bothered her nor has it ever hurt her chances for election. She'll continue to behave this way in order to satisfy her own ego, and to amuse herself.

What a piece of work you people have in office.

I heard the interview and provide my take on what likely happened:

Yvonne's story went that she and a companion went to a drive through at a local restaurant and ordered 2 beverages. When she pulled to the window to pay and get them, she wanted to pay for each beverage separately and the employee didn't know how to do that. YH then questioned her education and after a manager came to the clerk's defense, passed her business card and asked that the owner call her.

The rest of the interview was mostly commentary on how the youth of America is not well trained in math.

My take, for what it's worth:

Checks are split at restaurants all the time. The customers tell the server how the various charges should be split and then separate bills for the items consumed are brought to the table according to the guests wishes.

A Fast Food outlet is a different animal, where the bill is generated at the time the order is placed. At many stores, the bill is even displayed for the person ordering to see AND the amount due is always announced to the customer after the order is taken along with paying instructions like "pull forward to the second window".

While I've never worked a drive through, I imagine it's rare that a person would order two things then want to pay for them separately. I'm not at all surprised that the register system does not allow the employee to do that.

I envision that if Yvonne would have placed 2 orders, each for one beverage, the transactions would have both gone smoothly, but she didn't. Neither did she advise the facility that she wanted to pay for each item separately when the total due was announced before she drove to the pay window.

The time to ask that this fast food bill be split was at the time the order was placed, not at the pay window.

I'm surprised that YH couldn't see what the actual problem was and thought it was OK complain that things weren't done in the secret way she wanted. All she needed to do was to:

A. order the drinks separately, or
B. ask that the beverages be split because she wanted to pay separately when the total was announced, or
C. pay for what was ordered the way it was ordered and sort out the change with her friend after pulling away.

How could the person who took the order possibly think that she wanted to pay for the items separately? Imagine how slow the drive through line would flow if a 6 item order were paid for separately.

Boo YH.

Been following this developing thread wondering how the hell did something so innocuous be brought to public attention and expand itself. To give the benefit of the doubt listened to Fred's interview on replay on WSPD and concluded that she has no one to blame but herself. It's quite clear she felt she was dealing with a person of inferior quality than herself. At the very minimum we all deserve dignity given warts and all. She should not be on Toledo City Council no matter how minor her influence. We do not need at-tit-ude in council chambers. The incident is reminiscent of Karen McConnell-Hancock's distorted, inflated perception of what it means to be elected to council and the presumed privileges it provides.

Ugh, she's kind of the worst. She helps to give Dems a bad name, locally.

While we sit here and roll our eyes and can't figure out why she gets elected/ reelected- She makes it a point to go door to door to meet all of her constituents. Water Crisis? door to door. Blizzard? door to door. election coming up? door to door. Now, this is the downtown and central city district. In the 2015 special election in May, just 3% of the registered voters showed up. She has too much goodwill within team democrat, to lose that support, but, man, I wish they'd endorse someone else.

I image the 2012 wages at bailiff include payout of vacation and sick and personal which shows up wages and was the last year she worked - there was a settlement also which of course would not show up as wages.

"In other news-You have 2 outstanding young candidates this year for the at large slots-Sam Melden and Nick Komives. Let's work on getting some fresh blood in there."

Unfortunately, both of those candidates sought and/or accepted the endorsement from the Lucas County Democrat Party.

That ain't fresh blood. That's contaminated blood.

They have chosen to play the same archaic political game. That's not a new, young, and fresh approach to local politics.

If elected, Meldon and Komives will be owned by special interests like most political hacks.

Why would seemingly intelligent people submit themselves or enslave themselves like that, especially at the local level?

Run as Democrats, Greens, anarchists, or whatever, but live free from party endorsements.

Neither seek nor accept party endorsements or any endorsements. That would be a new, fresh approach.

The only endorsement needed is from the voters. And if a percentage of voters only vote how some org tells them to vote, then candidates should not want their mindless, robotic support.

If elected to city clowncil at-large, will the fresh blood vote according to what they think is best for the citizens, or will they vote according to how the local democrat machine wants them to vote?

I no longer trust anybody who seeks and receives an endorsement from any political party, except for maybe the Pirate Party.

Who asks to pay for drinks separately at a drive through?

I can't imagine the register system even allows for 2 separate debit/credit cards to pay partial costs on one order. It probably would have had to be entered as 2 separate orders from the beginning, as jimavolt mentioned.

If one or both were paying cash, then it's a moot point anyhow. The person in the driver's seat hands over the money or the card at the window, and they settle up cash with each other. Easy peasy.

If it's so crucial to have the transactions handled separately, then get your ass out of the car and walk up to the counter. It's not rocket science.

Here is how the young people working at McDonalds could prove they can do math if they are ridiculed:

If there was a councilperson who didn't like to pay property tax, and that councilperson had unpaid property tax in the amount of $632.49, but the actual tax due was $352.69, how much of the $632.49 due would represent prior unpaid delinquent charges? Answer is $279.80. The delinquent councilperson could have saved $279.80 by paying property tax on time and being responsible.
