Apparently, potica is different from beigli. ???
I've tried neither, but Zingerman's makes beigli for the holidays, and they do a pretty good with everything that they make and sell.
Beigli (bay-glee) is a yeasted dough rolled up with a sweet filling made of finely chopped walnuts. The outside has a nice shine to it and an unique crackle appearance. Inside, it has a trademark swirl that reminds you of a cinnamon roll standing on its side (though there's no cinnamon inside). The buttery dough made with organic flour and the rich walnut filling blend perfectly together, balancing the sweetness of the inside with the satisfying chew of the dough.
The traditional nut bread served at Easter and Christmas in Slovenia and still very popular in some parts of the United States is called potica (po-TEET-sah).
It is a yeast dough rolled and stretched paper thin and spread with a mixture of ground walnuts, butter, eggs, cream, and honey or sugar. It is then rolled jellyroll fashion and baked. Traditionally it was spiraled in a round pan, but now one is more likely to find it baked as a loaf.
Traditional fillings consisted of walnuts, hazelnuts, honey, mint, curd, cream, cracklings, bacon or dried fruits.
