Has MS stopped Windows 7 updates?

Neither one of my Windows 7 laptops will load the service. Service is turned on, used the fix-it tool, said Service registration is missing or corrupt. Downloaded the latest version of the Update agent and still won't run.

I have a hard drive back-up, but before I do that, asking for more information if anyone has any. Thanks.

According to the website, mainstream support went out in 2015 for Windows 7 Service Pack 1, and extended support (which generally means critical patches only) ends in 2020.

Unfortunately I don't have time this morning to search what could be going on, but if I have time this afternoon I'll take a look.

I read something about this somewhere. I can't remember what or where, but I do remember I stopped reading in order to refill my martini glass, and it 'tweren't with Vermouth and ice.

Here are two articles I found that might help you out:

Best wishes and all that.

Thanks to both of you! I have temporarily fixed it by changing the settings to "Download but let me choose whether to install them".

It must have happened during November's updates, because it affected both laptops at the same time. I haven't updated anything else since then, and October worked fine.

I reset it to Automatic today and it works now. I will never understand how something like this happens. Thanks again
