Toledo Talk

Cops and bad guys

The ABC evening news did a report yesterday Tues. on the sandbag thrown from the interstate bridge resulting in serious injury to the occupants in the passing vehicle below. What they did not include in the story was the quick apprehension of the four suspects by Toledo Division. That really should have been included in a week that saw the U.S. Attorney General Sessions visit Toledo and speak about crime stats that were not 100% accurate and did not reflect what by any objective analysis has been happening here in Toledo. TPD does not require any cheerleading, they do enough of that on their own, but we do deserve a fair representation on conditions here in the Glass City. Sheriff Tharp was early and effective with his response to the opioid crisis setting a model with Dart for many in the nation to follow. Chief Kral has been effective in reaching out to all segments of the population so they gain a better understanding of his department. We are fortunate to have both men on deck, on station, and performing well. ABC should have given credit where it was due.

"My kid is a good kid" - Mother of one of the juveniles

posted by stooks on Dec 21, 2017 at 07:40:02 am     #

Two of them have criminal records already.

If these kids have any siblings I hope CSB is investigating the parents. The parents need a course in parenting skills if they are allowing their kids to be out unsupervised in that area the late.

The Blade article brought up the 2004 Ravine Pkwy tragedy. It mentioned that the teens weren't charged in that incident. Does anyone remember why no charges were filed? I remember the incident and the lady dying and some teens being involved but I thought the kids were tried.

Hopefully these four kids don't get off easy. A new judge is handling the case and I'm not sure how tough she'll be on criminals.

The Toledo Blade did a nice job with this incident, and actually listed the names of the four alleged criminals.

Police: Man in Critical Condition after Teens Throw Items Onto I-75

From the article:
Pedro Salinas, 13; Sean Carter, 14; Demetrius Wimberly, 14; and William Parker, 14, are accused of throwing items from the overpass onto I-75 when Mr. Byrd was struck, according to a TPD news release. Each faces a charge of felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and was booked in the Lucas County Juvenile Detention Center.

Marquise Byrd was riding shotgun when a sandbag came through the windshield and nailed him. Byrd is in critical condition and may die from his injuries, in which case the four choir boys will be charged with some form of homicide.

As for the South Ravine incident, again from The Blade:
More than 10 years ago, a woman was killed when a 24-pound steel plate was dropped onto her windshield from a railroad bridge over South Ravine Parkway. Dorothy Minggia died in the Oct. 14, 2004 incident, but none of three young men arrested in connection with it was convicted of any crime.

The business made national news as well. We're strong for Toledo...

From CNN: Man Hurt When Boys Throw Sandbags from Overpass, Toledo Police Say

From Fox: Michigan Man Injured by Sandbag Thrown from Ohio Overpass

I wonder where the parents are in all this?

Okay, that's a rhetorical question. The parents are dysfunctional and have spent the past 13-14 years paying minimal attention to their children. This is the result, and if anyone thinks this is the first rodeo for the little darlings, I've got some Florida real estate for sale I'd like to talk to you about. Waterfront property just waiting to be developed.

It wasn't mentioned anywhere yet, but I'm curious. Does anyone know how much a typical street crew sandbag weights?

30#?
40#?

I read the Blade article and they did a nice job and kudos to TPD for catching these monsters so quickly.

I don't recall the South Ravine Parkway incident but am also wondering why the kids didn't get charged with murder, sounds like they didn't even get a hand slap for it.

Two of the four kids have already been charged with at least one crime already. I hope the victim survives and these kids have to stay in Juvie until they are 18 (or 21 whatever the max age is) and if he does die the kids get charged as adults.

I was curious too. These seem standard. They weigh 40# when filled. So I am going with 35.

The guy has died and the blade article said additional charges will be filed

What a sad thing for the family to lose a loved one two days before Christmas for a death the could have been totally prevented

In these situations the thugs should be required to apologize to the family in private as part of their punishment and if they are every released from prison be required to do things like snow shoveling and yard work for the parents.

Iím sure the parents will cry to the judge about what good kids they are and how they made a simple mistake and shouldnít have to spend their lives behind bars and didnt know they would harm anyone. IMO this isnít different than pulling a gun or knife on ib Someone and nurdering then

It was a 21 year old, a 20 year old, and a 14 year old juvenile.

The 20 year old was tried for murder and acquitted. The jury couldn't be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that the 20 year old was the one who threw it.

Testimony was presented at trial by a juvenile corrections officer that the juvenile "tearfully confessed" while he was locked up at the Juvenile Detention Center.

Seems like a poor decision for the prosecutor's office to go after only the 20 year old on the word of the other 2 who were also present.

I'd start with the four juveniles apprehended in this tragedy to have to view photos of the body at the morgue.

I mean, summary execution without a trial is fun and all (as is comparing kids to animals), but shouldn't we wait for that constitutionally-guaranteed trial by jury before pronouncing sentence?

The attorney for the guys who cull deer at the Metroparks is on the phone. He said they are innocent and that the entire premise is fucked up. Does anyone want to take this?

Can we all just agree that this story is tragic, there's no real way for justice to be served. Kids are stupid, particularly boys age 13-15. No matter the brilliant and original punishment we all come up with, nothing makes the hurt go away.

Do they have eyewitnesses that were there when this happened that will testify? I'm surprised the kids are denying the charges if someone witnessed it.

They need to have cameras at all these overpasses.

Why aren't they showing mugshots of the kids? They already released their names

Did someone sentence herr president? Only 4 of his associates have been charged, so far. I think we are entitled to an opinion. Also-crimes and impeachable offenses are not necessarily the same thing. For example-collusion, is not a legal term. If it turns out he took money though, thatís a bribe and itís illegal. If he had Russian Prostitutes pee on him, thatís a fetish, not a crime. Turn off Fox News. Trump is no martyr, he and his deeds, have nothing to do with these boys nor their crime.

Dossier is 100% real. All opposition campaigns build them. There is a dossier on everyone that has ever run for president, both parties. The question is, how accurate are the alleged claims. About 80% of it has reportedly been verified. The denials are coming from Trump and his little propaganda syncophants over at Fox. Sadly -no verification on the pee tape.... yet.

Happy to continue this, in another thread-I feel like the original thread was derailed (per usual) and now it wonít get back on track.

Vetted. He said 70-90% was vetted-This is mentioned, because it was privately funded with a due date. The experts in the intel community have since gone through and tried to verify as much as possible. The house intel committee (except for Nunes) has agreed that it is largely accurate. The most complex and specific pieces have been corroborated-Manafort, Flynn and Carter Pageís cases were built from the accuracy of this dossier. The strength and swiftness of the case , so far, would suggest they had a head start.

Mr. McCabe declined to criticize the dossierís 35 pages of salacious and criminal charges against Donald Trump and his aides, but he said it remains largely unverified, according to a source familiar with ongoing congressional inquiries.

This comes from McCabe's closed-door testimony to the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Now I will say, I pretty much ignore ANY news that is from anonymous sources, especially of late because time and time again MSM has had to retract or correct articles. But there are articles all over the place reporting that McCabe, #2 at FBI, would not testify to any of it being verified, even in closed door meetings.

Keep diggin'; it's getting pretty entertaining.
