Put 3 rings around this circus !

This just makes Wade look like a complete tool. First he picks someone who has no relevant experience. And now we find out he likely didn't even vet her.

More of the Same Old Toledo.

His reign of cronyism is off to a bad start.

I am sure he will pick another one of the recycled politicians looking for another pension to fill her spot.

Wade did not pick her the Democratic party did. What idiot did not due their due diligence?

posted by OldTimer on Jan 12, 2018 at 10:14:58 am     #

Wade didn't choose her. Since it is a county office and the spot was previously filled by a Democrat, the LCDP had to choose between candidates to fill the position. It was between Micheal Ashford, Lindsay Webb and a Oregon councilman. Maybe if she knew get credit score was bad, maybe not the best office to take.....

Yeah, this had nothing to do with Wade. Remember the Democratic Party going after Wade, saying he "jumped his place in line" and all that? These are the same people in charge of picking his replacement for Treasurer. The mayor has absolutely no involvement in that.

This will just make it look more like a recycled circus. Ashford gets the Treasurer's spot, PH2 gets his seat in the Ohio House. Clown Show at it's finest.

Can she recind her resignation from city council?

posted by Mike21 on Jan 12, 2018 at 10:18:34 am     #

But I do have to echo OT's comment, and maybe play conspiracy theorist here: somebody within the party and nominating group should have at least checked her credit to make sure she could even hold the position before they nominated her and let her resign her then-current elected position. Now she's out for both. Could the party have been that dumb, or was someone counting on this?

posted by Johio83 on Jan 12, 2018 at 10:20:08 am     #

City council could appoint her to the vacant position.

posted by OldTimer on Jan 12, 2018 at 10:20:21 am     #

I like Johio83's theory that someone was counting on/knew about this.

It would seem the Dem party did not want her in that particular office but elsewhere...and now nowhere.

Toledo politics at its best...the circus continues!

From her FB Page:

PRESS STATEMENT FROM LINDSAY WEBB January 12, 2018

Shortly after taking the oath of office to be the next Lucas County Treasurer, one of the County Commissioners called me to inform me that the County could not bond me. This came as a huge surprise to me. I was shocked. The reason for this is my personal credit score. I, like many people who struggle to make ends meet, knew I didn’t have stellar credit, but I never thought this would result in being denied a bonding necessary to be the Treasurer of the County.
We live like most people in Northwest Ohio, pay check to pay check, month to month, doing the very best that we can to provide for our family. As the old song goes, life happens when you are making other plans; for us, “life” was things like unemployment, bad furnaces, and broken cars. We always played the hand we were dealt. We paid our bills. But, elected officials are held to a higher standard.
After I received that phone call, I rushed home and pulled up my credit report and found an error that was dragging my already stretched credit, even lower. I immediately filed a dispute with the credit reporting agency and with the private student loan company that was improperly reporting my very last payment as 120 days late, when it in fact, was paid in full. However, it is too late. The damage is done.
I cannot take the office of Lucas County Treasurer because I cannot get a surety bond. For that, I apologize to the citizens of this County, the employees in the Treasurer’s office and at the Lucas County Land bank. Having already resigned from Toledo City Council, I feel it is best that I spend some time focusing on my family by returning to private life.
It has been the greatest honor of my life to represent the neighborhoods I love on Toledo City Council, and I have done my level best to try to make the community around me a better place.
My family appreciates your kindness and compassion during a time that has turned from great joy and excitement to disappointment and sadness. We ask you for your decency, consideration, and continued prayer.

Nicely composed. At least from me you have all three requests.

I would have loved to have been on the phone calls trying to get around this. Surely, something petty like a surety bond can't stand in the way of the Democratic Party's grand scheme could it? Why? They don't let logic stop them. Why would they allow something stupid like the law get in their way?

The whole display of blatant cronyism leading up this this has been disgusting. I didn't see a single reference to experience in finance being a factor. The only factor was electability and holding onto seats in their private game of musical chairs.

I believe she is failing to take accountability for her own credit score.

As someone who has served on the LCDP screening committee in the past, I can assure you there was no conspiracy to appoint a current officeholder and then see her booted from her appointed seat. That's just too embarrassing all the way around.

Most likely, no one even asked about her credit. The usual question is: Is there anything in your background that would embarrass you or us if it became public?

Remember, at one point the county Treasurer was Ray Kest, who spouted off about his money management skills when he ran for mayor. The Blade decided not to take him at his word, and when they looked at his credit report, saw that he had in the neighborhood of $80K in credit card debt. Jack Ford, who had made no such claims, had something like $15K in credit card debt. In comparison, this made him look pretty good.

Kind of makes you wonder how ol' Acapulco Ray ever became treasurer with that kind of debt.

Wow - I feel for her. That has to be deeply embarrassing - surely she didn't go into this musical chairs game thinking there would be a chance this would happen to her.

That said, she should have. Treasurer is an important fiduciary position - the highest in the county. She should have done her due diligence. I see a pattern with Lindsay - filing late election paperwork, making outlandish budget proposals without regard for the City's fiscal health. Probably not the best move for her political career.

That said, I wish her the best. I hope she takes time out of the spotlight, to enjoy her family, focus on her private life, reflect on the situation, and how that may affect her future political endeavors.

Boy, the LC Dem's didn't do her any favors. Part of me wonders if that was by design...

I'd be truly excited and comforted by the knowledge she will no longer be my council person but I know too well that the party apparatus will appoint some equally unqualified hack who's "turn" it is to take her place.
And politics as usual will continue in Lucas County.
Shocking as this may seem coming from me, I actually hold out some hope (and have some faith) that Wade means what he says and will govern accordingly. If he does, I'll be the first in line to sign his re-election petition.

Kind of makes you wonder how ol' Acapulco Ray ever became treasurer with that kind of debt.

I was wondering if maybe the bonding companies have changed their background checks in issuing bonds since Kest was in office. It kinda makes sense, I mean even car insurance companies sometimes pull credit reports before quoting rates.

I didn't see a single reference to experience in finance being a factor. The only factor was electability and holding onto seats in their private game of musical chairs.

Well, because realistically, the treasurer doesn't have a whole lot of discretion in investing funds. State law dictates what they can and can't invest your money in, so it's not really a requirement. Seriously, what experience did Wade have before he was elected to treasurer?

What is her background prior to politics? Is she an attorney?

On the bright side, this will give her more time to support Patrick Hickey, play politics and pay attention to the WLS board.
