Final Climate Straw Just Discovered. Tipping Point May Be In Our Past

>Global warming time bomb trapped in Arctic soil: study

>PARIS, Aug 24 (AFP) Aug 24, 2008
>Climate change could release unexpectedly huge
>stores of carbon dioxide from Arctic soils, which
>would in turn fuel a vicious circle of
>global
>warming, a new study warned Sunday.
>
>And according to one commentary on the research,
>current models of climate change have not taken
>this extra source of
>greenhouse
>gas into account.
>
>Scientists have long known that organic carbon
>trapped inside a blanket of frozen permafrost
>covering one fifth of the world's land mass
>would, if thawed, release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
>
>But until now they simply did not have a good
>idea of how much carbon is actually locked inside this Arctic freezer.
>
>To find out, a team of American researchers led
>by Chien-Lu Ping of the University of Alaska
>Fairbanks examined a wide range of landscapes across North America.
>
>They took soil samples from 117 sites, each to a
>depth of at least one metre, in order to provide
>a full assessment of the region's so-called "carbon pool."
>
>Previous estimates of the Arctic carbon pool
>relied heavily on a relative handful of

>The study, published in the British journal
>Nature Geoscience, found that the stock of
>organic carbon "is considerably higher than
>previously thought" -- 60 percent more than the previously estimated.
>
>This is roughly equivalent of one sixth of the
>entire carbon content in the atmosphere.

>And that is just for North America. The size and

>Europe and Russia are about the same, and
>probably contain a comparable amount of
>carbon-dioxide producing matter currently held in
>check only by the cold, the study said.

>by century's end of up to six degrees Celsius

>Commenting on the research, Christian Beer of the

>"Releasing even a portion of this carbon into the

>Methane, another greenhouse gas, is less abundant
>than carbon dioxide but several times more potent
>as a driver of global warming.

Notice the guy from Max Planke mentions that the current computer models don't add this new source of greenhouse gas, this new source of CO2 and methane. When updated, the computer models of James Hansen are the ones to watch.
A couple decades ago we had 180 days of frozen permafrost per year, made the Alaska pipeline easy to inspect and repair with trucks. Now we have about 50 frozen days per year. Result, the biggest oil land spill in history when the pipeline corroded in half. Whatever you do, don't ask any questions, and don't take any video showing life in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge. Others have tried and are still paying.

You know I never hear anyone say anything about stopping the countries in Central America from clear cutting the rain forests. Maybe the millions of missing acres of rain forest is a reason for increased CO2 in the atmosphere.

Actually Linecrosser, deforestation is covered in the IPCC report from last year. You should read it.

Its not making the national news desks though is it.

Oh and does that report stop them from cutting the forests down?

Its not making the national news desks though is it.

Meaning what, it didn't happen? God help us if we rely on the corporate-owned media.

Oh and does that report stop them from cutting the forests down?

Nope. That's up to us.

It's the religion of the "new age". Good news for all you environmentalists - it's a recycled religion of ancient origin.

Praise Gaia! Oh great Mother Earth I pledge to wear Birkenstocks made only of baked recycled Toyota Prius', and to recycle my poo.

Ughh. rme

If its a "recycled religion of ancient origin", the roots of it are in the preferences that people have, for instance they don't want to live in their own shit, don't want shit in their water, poison in their air, and don't want to eat food poisoned intentionally by farmers and food processors to increase production.

Fuck Gaia, just pray your kids don't get cancer from eating their breakfast or inhaling.
With Toledo's dismal cancer rate, you should have taken it into consideration in your posts. Is everything a simple issue for you, independent of its full ramifications? Thats the sure sign of a dumb ass with a purely political outlook, so I hope not.

Religion, all the major religions as generally practiced, are nothing more than suicide cults with political aspirations of electing the candidates that will bring on the final battle to end the world for Kool Aide. Bushy is a prime example of the danger of mixing church and state.
