New Toledo Talk Site---Please tell me what you think

Given the amount of extreme vulgar profanity that's toleratd here, I'm wondering how much interest there would be in a NEW Toledo Talk site?
What I'm thinking is a site almost identical to this, free speech for the most part. However, a site that would not allow explicit profanity, vulgar personal attacks or personal threats.
Call it what you will, censorship or whatever.
It's merely my opinion, and perhaps mine alone, that a site like this would work much better without tolerence for posters who verbally assualt others such as Darkseid, as an example.
Also, a site where the person in charge woud not delete posts just because he doesn't personally agree or like them.

It's just a thought. I have the time and know-how if there's enough interest. If there's not, that's fine too, I can handle being in the minority if that's what it turns out to be.

Sure swampbubbles is fine, if you want every topic started only by the administrator. Is there even a way to start your own topic on swampbubbles? If you like control its fine. Have I missed the button on swampbubbles that would allow starting your own topic?

Go Ahead. Create your own site. Many of us have blogs and forums already online. If it's interesting and can compete in the marketplace, great! If not, visitors won't come and it will fail. Still...you will never know unless you try. You say you have the time but do not underestimate the commitment if your site takes off.

Only one rule...Do not call it Toledo Talk or somehow associate it to Toledo Talk. That's just rude and may be a copyright infringment if JR has taken the proper steps.

It's just a forum in which I happen to like. If the thin skinned get their feelings hurt, don't participate. Personal vendettas are a waste of energy. As said above, many have their own blogs.

As far as the language, I don't happen to talk that way, and honestly try to avoid sophomoric insults; I was just plain raised that way.

Being a big physical guy who actually likes to fight and is good at it, I'll take it outside if necessary but would rather buy beers, get past the initial sting, and send you a card at Christmas.

Personally, I don't have time for long eggheaded prose and choose to chime in with a few lazy and hastily written words. I'm not ashamed to admit that I actually learn things from these forums and will only let those things affect me in ensuing years, the rest is runoff.

Appreciate the input.
One would think it goes without saying it would be wrong to copy a website name, however, I of course would never.

As for being thin skinned, I agree completely. I'm as thick skinned as they come and actually no one has ever assailed me directly i here. I don't think I've ever said anything to be assailed come to think of it.

I do however take issue with bullies and lack of common respect. But again, that's just me.

I think I tried a new Toledo Talk at Toledo Talk about two years ago, and again just over a year ago, and neither took.

So a site that permits posts about national politics without the charged language, eh? Good luck with that.

angryconsumer, you made a post targeting another Toledo Talk user. From the old posting guidelines Web page :

What makes a bad post to ToledoTalk?

A new front page posting that is a negative attack against another Toledo Talk user will not be tolerated. We get enough of that in comments. But making the attack on another user the main subject of a new thread will result in the poster's account being deactivated.

That posting guidelines page was created years ago. I guess I need to make that old page prominent again, since common sense obviously doesn't work here. And angryconsumer, your account is still active, so I'm not following the guidelines.


Hey, I could bring back the Ouch!!! command. From that old posting guidelines page :

On July 14, 2006, a method was added that allows logged-in users to complain that a comment is inflammatory. The Ouch!!! link appears immediately to the left of the "posted by" line at the bottom of a comment. The ouch link only appears if the user is logged in, and it only appears if the topic is young enough to still accept comments.

A user can only complain once per comment. Trying to issue a second complaint causes the user to receive an error message, telling the user he or she complained already for that comment. After the first complaint, all that happens visually for the user is the page reloads with the comment being complained about appearing at the top of the webpage, as if the user clicked on the permalink.

And a complaint is registered in the database. When a comment receives 'X' number of complaints, the background color for that comment changes to a light red, indicating to everyone that it's a comment not worth reading.

The point of the "Ouch!!!" command is to allow users to police the site and hopefully reduce the noise, especially those comments that probably break the posting guidelines of the site. This is not meant to be used because one user simply disagrees with another user's viewpoint. "Ouch!!!" is meant to highlight obviously offensive or troll-like comments.

You all could Ouch!!! away, and I only would have to read a report.

This is so old fashioned, but whatever happened to just ignoring the filthy comment? If there is no response then eventually most filthy posters (and you KNOW who you are) will realize that the tactic isn't working and either leave or stop. However, I'll admit that I have posted a negative response to the really ugly and unescessary filth that has reared its head of late.

As JR pointed out, this has been tried before. I seem to remember a post by JR stating he thought ToledoTalk would be a place to exchange recipes, talk about the weather and reassure each other that gay marriage is completely normal.

Then LimeDrops was banned for the rest of his natural life and someone else had their account suspended. SwampBubbles was formed as an alternative to TT, and here we all are.

Sure, go ahead, start up a new site. Knock yourself out. The only question you should be asking yourself is how you plan to keep the verbal brawling to a minimum, because both JR and Chis (SB) are pretty good at maintaining order, and their best efforts don't seem to have produced the result you might be after.

Holland- You are correct about ignoring filthy comments. Whether it's old fashioned or not doesn't change your being right. Truth be told, I just got fed up seeing someone trying to bully others with their childish and ignorant browbeating and vulgarity.

Hindsight being what it always is, I know the best thing would have been to just ignore it as I always do. I'm so aware of how people expose themselves for what they really are that my attention to the matter really only gave it more than my time and energy are worth. And, my ego also got the best of me knowing I would happily tell him or anyone else what I think of them directly to their face.

OK, time to move on. You all enjoy your postings and should I have offended anyone, well, get over it. If I can, you can as well.

Phew...where to begin....

1. ToledoTalk used to be a site in which there was a true sense of community, and in which ideas could be exchanged with a minimum of personal attacks. I'm not sure if the current national political contentiousness is contributing to the vitriolic atmosphere on some threads, but the respect and civil discourse that were once a hallmark of ToledoTalk are gone.

2. Jr is far from the post-zapping control freak that a few posters seem to think he is. He has been quite willing to allow a wide variety of opinions and profanity, and steps in only rarely, like when poster swd created a tacky post-level smackdown against the barely-dead Peter Jennings. However, in the past there was a self-policing quality among the regular posters, who reminded others of the expected site decorum and whose examples in posts and comments set the standards for others to follow. Jr rarely stepped in because the kids played nice in his sandbox, but these days the place is more like a mud pit. Personally, this makes the site less worth my time, since all I have to do is turn on the TV if I wanted to watch non-stop personal attacks, which I don't.

3. Re: a new Toledo Talk - feel free to create a new site if you believe you can do better, angryconsumer. If there is interest, and your ideas take root, the site could blossom. Of course, it could also fall flat, and you would be stuck maintaining a site with little traffic. Just be prepared to pour a lot of work into the venture with little reward beyond the satisfaction that you provided a home for others to vent, share ideas, and occasionally act like idiots. Bars accomplish the same goals, but with the potential for a lot more profit, plus free peanuts and beer on the slow weeks.

4.. Only 0.2 percent for me on the F-bombers report? What the.... err, heck.
