University of Toledo football coach Tom Amstutz plans to step down from his position on Monday, The Blade has learned.
Amstutz and UT athletic director Mike O'Brien are scheduled to announce at a morning news conference that Amstutz will be reassigned to a different job within the university, not necessarily the athletic department, at the conclusion of the season.
Amstutz, 53, is 57-38 in his eight-year career with the Rockets that includes two Mid-American Conference championships. But the Rockets are 2-6 this season. UT is 0-4 at the Glass Bowl this year and is heading toward its third straight losing season.

Really strange to do this 2 days before a game. Wonder who's taking over interim?
I would assume that Amstutz will command the team until the end of the season. Since it says he will be assigned to a difference job "at the conclusion of the season".
Its not completely unusual to have a lame duck coach finish out an unsalvageable season. (Like John L. Smith a few years ago at MSU, as one example off the top of my head.)
amstutz has always put the university first and with the growing chorus of discontent over the program he has done so again.
Great guy, good Coach; but it's time for a change.
There is something more to this. They let Joplin stay around a lot longer with worse teams.
About time.
Lately his team has been completely out of control with no apparent respect for authority or discipline. The fact that the AD had no intention of extending his contract I think rang loud and clear.
Toledo has the potential to be a great program and at least get into a Mid-Major conference, since the MAC has really been able to maintain itself on the national stage.
Coaching replacements? If they are smart...go after the assistants from Big 12 or SEC teams.

A Venable chance? We could pray.
I have been in Toledo since 2001, thought Amst. was ok. Thought he made more money. We will see what comes along.
TAHL
He's getting 190K to work in "alumni relations"?! Nice for a guy who can't communicate a single sentence without stammering.
What a chance to get rid of Brett Venables? I'll help pack his bags...but only if it means Mike will leave AZ and come back.
But someone like that would definitely be good for Toledo. I was thinking Tyrone Willingham wouldn't be terrible either. Washington just has crap recruiting...but he seems like a good guy.
