Spotted a Bald Eagle

Today around 4pm, my son and I was returning from the grocery store. While we were unloading our groceries, my son Matt spotted the bald eagle above our heads. It was beautiful. It soared around then it looked like it landed or went in for a kill by the Maumee river. I live on South Ave near I-75 and the Maumee River. The last time I seen one in the area was about 10yrs ago. Has anyone else had the pleasure spotting one in the Toledo sky?

that must have been awesome. I've only seen big hawks in the west toledo area.

I see them once every so often in Sylvania.

Also my cousin lives out in Oak Harbor and have about 80 acres of land. They have a nest on their property and you can see the babies sometimes.

See them here from time to time, live very near the lake with Ottawa river to the south and Half Mile creek just north. See them fly over the field behind our house. We also get a lot of Peragrin Falcons here too, they like the morning doves that frequent the bird feeders behind our house. I saw 6 at one time behind our house, harassing a squirrel.
Was helping my brother cut down a tree, he was using a large mobilized platform to reach the upper limbs, about 20 feet into the air. About freeked out when a large bald eagle came to investigate him. Flew about 8-10 feet over his head into the wind nice and slow, then flew off to the river and out of sight. It a little amazing when you get a closer look and realize how fricken huge they are.

Yes, he was very big. About toddler size I would say. I remember back as a child when they were put on the endangered list. Great to see them back in the area. Now if only the pheasants would come back.

I was once told the bald eagle is the official "pigeon" up in Alaska (in terms of numbers). There's alleged fables of the population being so high there that trees turn black when they gather to roost. I wouldn't mind seeing an eagle hunt down a rabbit here in Holland.

There's a nest close to the water treatment plant, and it wasn't unusual to see a bald eagle flying over Cullen Park or the golf course.

There is also a nest located on one of the islands near Walbridge Park, so seeing one in that area wouldn't surprise me.

They are coming back!

I've seen a couple bald eagles during my stay here. Beautiful creatures.

Btw ToledoLatina, I saw a wild Pheasant this past spring for the first time in my life. It was near the entrance to Maumee Bay State Park. So there's at least some still around here :)

Usually find the pheasants near open fields - near corn & grain fields where they feed. Not all that uncommon...or at least I didn't think so.

Use to see them all the time when I hunted in the 70's. I didn't shoot 'em 'cause I didn't like the taste of pheasant.

I've seen them several times here in Holland over the years. They're unmistakable when they have that white head and tail. If they're young and without the white head/tail, the wingspan will sure make you take a second look.

The other I glanced out out the living room window and there was a Coopers hawk perched on a dwarf tree ( about 5' tall) 1ft. from the front deck and 8 ft. from the window. We were eyeball to eyeball. He was hunting the adjacent bird feeder I'm sure.

The other "day" I glanced.... I havn't had enough coffee yet I guess.

Muchos Gracias, Senora Latina!
Hey hockeyfan, I urge you to visit www.rarebird.org and click on Forum/Toledo Area Bird Alert (NW Ohio). Somebody posted a BE sighting over the Fallen Timbers Battle Site in Maumee. Anybody can join this forum by establishing a username and password.

I see pheasants quite frequently. (Live in Sylvania Twp, near Pacesetter Park. Several farm fields near my home.)

Also see pheasants quite frequently in the Petersburg/Dundee area. I think you just have to get close enough to open fields to see them...I've never seen them close to town.

As a child I remember seeing pheasants all the time on South Ave near Khulman Drive. I have not seen any since the late70s early 80s. And in that area there is plenty of grain to be had.

Yes...there's a nest among the islands near the Riverview Apartments in Rossford. Makes me wonder how duck hunting is still allowed in that area. Shouldn't hunting in proximity of an endangered species not to mention the general population of humans living in the area be prohibited?
