Local Bands of the 80's

Let's discuss the memories and whereabouts of local talent of the 80's. Remember the Oops Band, a house band for the Beaver Club on the Maumee (which burned to the ground...er.. river) and then at the Glendale Inn (now a Kroger)? What ever became of those guys? I think the lead singer was "Allen". I also remember going to a club called The Cypress at Laskey near Douglas. It was painted Sea Green and had an outdoor patio out back. There was a house band of 3 guys but for the life of me I can't recall their name. Help me on this, it has been bugging me for awhile. How 'bout High Society? Tempest? Rizzo? Hotlix? There has been some great talent in our area. I don't get out as much as I used to but remember a time where just about every bar had live entertainment on the weekends. Bar hopping was a weekly event to look forward to and the entertainment was excellent.

It is sad that the concept of the bar band is dying. Unfortunately, it is infinitely cheaper to hire a kid with 20,000 songs downloaded on his computer to be a DJ than it is to pay a band.

I remember Hotlix; I used to own a business right next door to their bar on Alexis. Excellent musicians, funny (but risque) stage show, and they always drew a good crowd.

lots of great bands back then - the o.t. and the university pub were regular stops for the haircuts, loved by millions and the wet shavers, mo davis and the movers.

i only saw the raisin band once before they broke up and most of them moved on to eventually become the bears.

The Ray Band? Played a lot at the Distillerie. Tom Carros, lead guitar. I think now it's Child Proof Toys.

haircuts, loved by millions and the wet shavers

LOL, Loved By Millions played at my wedding reception Oct. of '87. Cost me, I believe, a grand, and well worth it. They played from 9 to 2:30, with 3-4 breaks off for food and shots at the bar. Unreal time. At least 50 people told me afterwards it was the best reception they ever attended.

That period really was the heyday for the OT and Pub.

I remember seeing the Exciterz at Howard's Club H in BG. They did a killer version of '96 Tears', and they didn't even have an organist, LOL.

YES!!! The X-Citerz!!! Thanks...I can sleep now! They were incredible...my ears are still ringing from those guys! That little green club used to rock!!! Sure miss those days. Thanks for the link too...I recognize Doug. I'll have to check out the Dougouts sometime. Thanks also for including the 70's bands...don't want to ignore that era either. Remember the days of 3.2 beer for 18-21 year olds and since Michigan was an "18" state at the time the commercial was "Go North to the Grotto!" (where you could drink the 7% stuff)?

I remember having this tape back in the day.

I was in HS in the 80s and was trying to think of bands that played our dances. I seem to remember a band called Oriental Spas that was pretty good. The Plunge also played a lot of SJ dances and did the whole college rock thing: Violent Femmes, etc.

Whoa... haven't heard that name in a long time! My older sister dated the bass player for about a year and a half. She says early 80s, because she was out of high school, but not quite old enough to get into the 21 and over clubs they played.

My sister talked my mom into taking me to see them play at the Sly Fox in Maumee once. I was only in junior high at the time. Probably my first live rock show, at least that I can recall.

Did I miss it or did no one mention Marikesh?

I remember back when the local MTV had a "Battle of the Bands" contest, hosted by hot babe Debbie Christianson(sp?) and some dude.

I was a groupie with "MVP" (now playing as "The Puppet Show") when that event happened.

And be damned, with as many basement bands that were there, can't recall a one....

I saw Whirlwind in concert at the Lucas County Fairgrounds in the 1980 or so; they opened with Holidays in the Sun by the Sex Pistols and segued directly into Highway Star by Deep Purple. At the time, my young friends and I found the genre-jumping an audacious move. In retrospect, it's shocking how tame Never Mind The Bullocks sounds.
