Mercury in High Fructose Corn Syrup, courtesy of toledoen

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/26/AR2009012601831.html

A waste of cropland to make something that is causing epidemic diabetes in the U.S., and then to find it's contaminated with mercury. Why the f*ck don't farmers grow food anymore? Why are they in the chemical and poison business? Why are they allowed to poison the rivers and Lake Erie with hormone mimics and carcinogens? How do you stop them from killing us?

I shop on the "healthy" side (organic/local/non-processed), but we do have two products from the above list in the pantry: Campbells Tomato Soup and Heinz Ketchup. Time to find organic alternatives.

The Hawaiian Punch in my fridge just went down the drain. Thanks.

I tend to buy a lot of store-brand (generic) items. What are the chances that my Kroger brand ketchup is tainted similarly to the Heinz and Hunt's ketchups? Probably better than 50-50.

100% if it has high fructose corn syrup. looks like thats out of my diet for good

I have been eating foods with corn syrup for 70 years. I don't plan to change now. We were brought up with many things that you find objectable and it did not hurt us.

Although I have no basis to support or refute the data, it's important to know that this is not a 'news story', but rather a press release from IATP that was picked up by Washington Post. IATP is a lobbying group, so weigh the content as you would a press release from the NRA, NOW or Billy Mays.

"Mercury in High Fructose Corn Syrup, courtesy of toledoen"

When I first read the subject line of this thread I laughed because it sounds like Toledoen is contaminating high fructose corn syrup with mercury.

deere1: I doubt that, hfcs was not widely introduced to our food until the late 70s.

Good post again Tole3dolen! It's interesting that EPA knew about this for four years and didn't make a peep.
Add to that what we get on inhalation from coal burning, the amount that's in childhood vaccinations too. Babies and children are much more susceptible to terrible effects from mercury poisoning than adults at the same dose. Government simply must start regulating polluters instead of taking their money at election time and letting them kill us.
